As members of the Church, we believe that our Heavenly Father, in His divine judgment, chooses the appropriate time of death, the essential step and passageway to the next and more perfect life. Although medical technology has created many possibilities for increasing the quality and duration of life in many cases, its use must be appropriately and cautiously implemented. The role of medicine and technology should be to assist in providing cure and comfort to patients in need, rather than the artificial postponement of the natural process of dying.

Direct Demonstration Of Retroviral Recombination In A Rhesus Monkey, Dawn P. Wooley, Randall A. Smith, Susan Czajak, Ronald C. Desrosiers

Recombination may be an important mechanism for increasing variation in retroviral populations. Retroviral recombination has been demonstrated in tissue culture systems by artificially creating doubly infected cells. Evidence for retroviral recombination in vivo is indirect and is based principally on the identification of apparently mosaic human immunodeficiency virus type 1 genomes from phylogenetic analyses of viral sequences. We infected a rhesus monkey with two different molecularly cloned strains of simian immunodeficiency virus. One strain of virus had a deletion in vpx and vpr, and the other strain had a deletion in nef. Each strain on its own induced low virus …

Computer technology continues to expand and grow in health care today. Computers have become an every day part of health care throughout the hospital environment. Computer technology has been a part of the monitoring system in the operating room; now computer technology is on the verge of entering the operating room for patient charting, impacting the perioperative nurses' daily routine. Determining perioperative nurses' attitudes toward computerization is important in minimizing stress and difficulty of implementing intraoperative computerization. Through understanding demographics associated with these attitudes, a smooth transition can be accomplished to perioperative computerization. A Recombinant Inwardly Rectifying Potassium Channel Coupled To Gtp-Binding Proteins, Kim W. Chan, M. Noelle Langan, Jin Liang Sui, J. Ashot Kozak, Amanda Pabon, John A. A. Ladias, Diomedes E. Logothetis

GTP-binding (G) proteins have been shown to mediate activation of inwardly rectifying potassium (K+) channels in cardiac, neuronal and neuroendocrine cells. Here, we report functional expression of a recombinant inwardly rectifying channel which we call KGP (or hpKir3.4), to signify that it is K+ selective, G-protein-gated and isolated from human pancreas. KGP expression in Xenopus oocytes resulted in sizeable basal (or agonist-independent) currents while coexpression with a G-protein-linked receptor, yielded additional agonist-induced currents. Coexpression of KGP and hGIRK1 (a human brain homolog of GIRK1/Kir3.1) produced much larger basal currents than those observed with KGP or hGIRK1 alone, and upon coexpression …

Top-Down Cascade From A Bitrophic Predator In An Old-Field Community, Matthew D. Moran, Thomas P. Rooney, L. E. Hurd

We tested the hypothesis that a bitrophic (third and fourth level) arthropod predator can exert a cascading, top-down influence on other arthropods and plants in an early successional old field. First-stadium mantids, Tenodera sinensis, were added to replicated open-field plots in numbers corresponding to naturally occurring egg hatch density and allowed to remain for ≈ 2 mo. Sticky-trap dispersal barriers around both control and mantid-addition plots allowed us to monitor emigration of arthropods continuously during the experiment. Biomass of herbivores, carnivores, and plants, and abundances of arthropod taxa within plots were determined at the beginning, middle, and end of …

Swelling-Induced human erythrocyte K-Cl cotransport is membrane potential independent and capable of uphill transport. However, a complete thermodynamic analysis of basal and stimulated K-Cl cotransport, at constant cell volume, is missing, This study was performed in low K sheep red blood cells before and after reducing cellular free Mg into the nanomolar range with the divalent cation ionophore A23187 and a chelator, an intervention known to stimulate K-Cl cotransport. The anion exchange inhibitor 4,4'diisothiocyanato-2,2'disulfonic stilbene was used to clamp intracellular pH and Cl or NO3 concentrations. Definitive airway management is one of the most important aspects of the care of ill or injured patients with a decrease in the level of consciousness. The effect of poor airway management can lead to aspiration, hypoxia, suffocation and death. Definitive airway management is the gold standard of care in patients with a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) of less than or equal to eight. Since average flight times to arrive at the patients "bedside" (hospital or accident scene location) are thirty minutes to two hours, the care that the patient receives prior to arrival of the flight crew is vital …
