In rat basophilic leukemia (RBL) cells and Jurkat T cells, Ca²⁺ release–activated Ca²⁺ (CRAC) channels open in response to passive Ca²⁺ store depletion. Inwardly rectifying CRAC channels admit monovalent cations when external divalent ions are removed. Removal of internal Mg²⁺ exposes an outwardly rectifying current (Mg²⁺-inhibited cation [MIC]) that also admits monovalent cations when external divalent ions are removed. Here we demonstrate that CRAC and MIC currents are separable by ion selectivity and rectification properties: by kinetics of activation and susceptibility to run-down and by pharmacological sensitivity to external Mg²⁺, spermine, and …

Phosphoglycan messengers (PGMs) which are carbohydrate derivatised phosphatidyl cyclitols are disclosed, together with the finding that these substances are biologically active, e.g. in lowering blood glucose levels. These compounds are distinct from GPI-anchors disclosed in the prior art as these GPI-anchors are protein linked and are not biologically active.

PPhosphoglycan messengers (PGMs) which are carbohydrate derivatised phosphatidyl cyclitols are disclosed, together with the finding that these substances are biologically active, especially in modulating plasma cholesterol, plasma triglycerides and/or high density lipoprotein levels and/or modulating the LDL:HDL ratio, and for the treatment of lipodystrophy or dyslipidemia. Disturbing new patterns have marked the occurrence of recent lethal school violence where young offenders have targeted large groups of fellow students as their victims. The current study is an effort to understand this growing trend of youth violence. Based on analysis of several cases that occurred between 1996 and 1999, a profile of the offenders is suggested built on similarities and differences between cases that were researched. Data was collected from online databases and internet websites for various news organizations. Activation of p38 kinase by osmotic stress has been documented in many cells; however, no report has distinguished the effects of cell volume on p38 activity from the effects of the altered osmotic condition per se. Here we report asymmetrical activation of astrocyte p38 mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase in response to volume increases and volume decreases. We separate effects of cell volume changes from the effects of osmotic exposure on p38 activation. Exposure to 400, 500, or 600 mOsm phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) caused cell shrinkage and an osmolality-dependent increase in p38 activity to 175%, 409%, or 518%, respectively, compared with …

Aims: To compare age-adjusted injury mortality rates between Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) Hispanics, Texas Hispanics and Texas Whites. Methods: Using data from the Texas Department of Health, we examined deaths from injuries including: motor vehicle accidents, homicide, and suicide from 1980 through 1998. Results: Injury deaths are the fourth leading cause of death in Texas. Mortality rates for all-cause injuries among LRGV Hispanics were 25% lower than rates among Texas Whites. Traffic accident mortality were quite similar among the study groups. From 1980, the average mortality from traffic accidents per 100,000 persons was 21.9 among Whites and 27.2 among …

Background

Increasing access to safe abortion services is the most effective way of preventing the burden of unsafe abortion, which is achieved by increasing safe choices for pregnancy termination. Medical abortion for termination of early abortion is said to safe, effective, and acceptable to women in several countries. In Ethiopia, however, medical methods have, until recently, never been used. For this reason it is important to assess women's preferences and the acceptability of medical abortion and manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) in the early first trimester pregnancy termination and factors affecting acceptability of medical and MVA abortion services.
