A Comparison Of The Effects Of Moderate- And High-Carbohydrate Diets On Coronary Heart Disease Risk Factors: A Pilot Study, Margaret Helen Fernandez, Julia Ava Niehaus Soper

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This pilot study compared the effects of two diets on total cholesterol to high- density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio, body mass index, and waist circumference. A diet of 15% protein, 55% or more carbohydrate, and 30% or less fat was compared to a diet of 30% protein, 40% carbohydrate, and 30% fat. Lipid levels and anthropometric measurements were obtained on 18 adult males with moderately elevated lipid levels before and after 12 weeks of dietary intervention. Analyses showed variances between and within the study groups in the areas of anthropometric measurements and lipid levels; no statistically significant differences between the groups …

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Predictors of patient satisfaction among hospitalized adult Mexican Americans were examined in this pilot study. Acculturation as determined by the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans-II (ARSMA-II), ethnicity of the nurse, age, gender, socioeconomic status, level of education and marital status were examined as predictors of patient satisfaction. Patient satisfaction was measured by the Patient Satisfaction Inventory (PSI). The pilot study was conducted in an acute care setting in the lower Rio Grande Valley, where 81 participants provided the data. The questionnaires were offered in both English and Spanish. Two qualitative questions were asked regarding the patients' perception of culturally …

Depression In Mexican American Adolescence And Its Relations To Ethnic Identity And Self Esteem, Deborah Cohen Woloski Oct 1998

Depression In Mexican American Adolescence And Its Relations To Ethnic Identity And Self Esteem, Deborah Cohen Woloski

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study investigated incidence of depressive symptomatology, clinical depression, and suicidal ideation in a high school sample of 1751 Mexican-American adolescents. The relations of depression, as measured by the Diagnostic Scale for Depression-26 (DSD26), self-esteem, as measured by the abbreviated Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale and ethnic identity, as measured by the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) were analyzed. Results indicate that Mexican-American adolescents are at increased risk for depressive symptomatology and suicidal ideation. Results showed that there is no higher incidence of Major Depressive Episode (MDE) in Mexican-American adolescents but an increased risk for depressive symptomatology was found. Ethnic identity and …

Perceived Health Competency And Health Value, Acculturation And Obesity In A Mexican American Population, Roberto Eliud Maldonado Aug 1998

Perceived Health Competency And Health Value, Acculturation And Obesity In A Mexican American Population, Roberto Eliud Maldonado

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Mexican Americans have a higher incidence of obesity than non-Hispanic whites, yet this population seems to be less concerned with maintaining an ideal body weight than non-Hispanic whites. This puts the Mexican Americans population at higher risk for illnesses associated with increased body fat and obesity. One important factor found to influence health maintenance behavior is perceived self-efficacy, or the degree to which the individual feels capable of effectively managing his or her behavioral outcome. This study examines the moderating effect of health competency and health value on body weight in individuals undergoing acculturation.

Although no significant correlations were found …

Acculturation Of A Mexican-American Male Population And Gender Role Conflict, Gary Evan Leka May 1998

Acculturation Of A Mexican-American Male Population And Gender Role Conflict, Gary Evan Leka

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study examined the effects of different modes of acculturation upon self reported levels of gender role conflict, and explored the relationship among acculturative stress, the concepts of Machismo and Familism and gender role conflicts. Hispanic males (N = 164) from a university with an 90% Hispanic enrollment were surveyed. Low Bicultural subjects differed significantly upon the factors of restrictive emotionality and restrictive affectionate behavior between men than other modes of acculturation. Machismo was found to be significantly related to stress and conflicts with gender roles, while Familism was found to be related to two of the patterns of gender …

Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of age, gender, socioeconomic status (SES), academic achievement (education), and type of occupation, on the performance of the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE) Spanish version.

Material and methods: The BDAE was administered to a group of 156, 19 to 60 years old, occupationally active normal subjects.

Results: A descriptive analysis showed that some subjects (1 to 3%) scored in the pathological range of the centiles and profiles of the BDAE. A MANOVA (p < 0.05) demonstrated a significant effect of education over most of the BDAE subtests. Females outperformed males on some reading and writing subtests. SES had an effect over body part identification and naming. Significant differences were observed between younger and middle age groups in confrontation naming, oral and word picture reading. The older group scored significantly lower than the younger group in serial writing and sentences to dictation. No differences were observed between the older and the middle groups. Only oral spelling was affected by the type of occupation but a significant interaction of occupation and level of education was found.

Conclusions: Language tests are influenced by demographic variables, particularly education. Normal variability on the BDAE should …

The Developmental Abilities Of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Graduates, Cynthia A. Gonzalez May 1997

The Developmental Abilities Of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Graduates, Cynthia A. Gonzalez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Bayley Mental Psychomotor Developmental Indices Scores of 61 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Graduates were examined to investigate whether a predicted early developmental lag would occur followed by an increase or "catch-up" over time. Results indicated that no significant changes occurred over time; however, mental (Bayley MDI) scores were lower than motor (Bayley PDI) scores particularly at the 4- and 22-month test age. Gross motor, fine motor, social, cognitive, and language development was also investigated to see whether expected differences among these domains occurred over time. Results indicated that gross motor scores were greater than all other domains. Ethnicity, birth weight, …

Risk Factors In Adolescents For Engaging In Sexual Behaviors, Dolores Calderon Castellano May 1997

Risk Factors In Adolescents For Engaging In Sexual Behaviors, Dolores Calderon Castellano

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Teenage sexuality has become a social concern, because of its impact on teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, abortion, government aid and school drop-out. In an effort to better predict risk of early sexual activity, a secondary analysis was conducted on data collected from 413, 11-14 year old students attending the 6th, 7th and 8th grade levels in Hidalgo County, in south Texas. Parent-child Communication, Children's Religiosity, Educational Goals, Educational Grades, Self-Esteem, and Congruency of Sexual Values between children and parents were used as predictor variables. Multiple regression analysis revealed Congruency of Values, Educational Goals, Educational Grades and Religion as the …

Nutritional Requirements For Preterm Infants In Neonatal Intensive Care Units, James Allen Nelson Dec 1996

Nutritional Requirements For Preterm Infants In Neonatal Intensive Care Units, James Allen Nelson

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This thesis reviewed the special caloric requirements of preterm infants. The goal of this research was to investigate the feasibility of using the time required for infants to reach substantial feeding as a possible indicator of future developmental progress. The triage of birth weight, gestational age, and days to first substantive oral feeding were highly significant in predicting development through 12 months of age. However, none of the independent variables contributed significant unique variance in predicting developmental outcome.

Case Studies Of Selective Mutism In Hispanic Children, Colleen Anne Gittins Oct 1996

Case Studies Of Selective Mutism In Hispanic Children, Colleen Anne Gittins

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Selective mutism is a consistent refusal to use spoken language in specific social situations. This can occur in a particular environment or with specific individuals. A collaboration of four case studies was used to study the possible etiologies, characteristics, and intervention strategies associated with selective mutism. Four children from public school campuses in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas were subjects in this investigation as well as teachers and parents.

A questionnaire was used to gather data along with informal interviews. Results concluded that prevalence rates for selective mutism are relatively high in the area surveyed. Furthermore, many professional …

Synergistic Effects Of Traumatic Head Injury And Apolipoprotein 4 In Patients With Alzheimer’S Disease, R. Mayeux, R. Ottman, Gladys E. Maestre, C. Ngai, M.-X. Tang, H. Ginsberg, M. Chun, B. Tycko, M. Shelanski Jan 1995

Synergistic Effects Of Traumatic Head Injury And Apolipoprotein 4 In Patients With Alzheimer’S Disease, R. Mayeux, R. Ottman, Gladys E. Maestre, C. Ngai, M.-X. Tang, H. Ginsberg, M. Chun, B. Tycko, M. Shelanski

School of Medicine Publications

The apolipoprotein 4 allele increases the risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), but cerebral deposition of B-amyloid with age, a genetic mutation, or head injury may contribute to the pathogenesis of this disease. We examined the risks of AD associated with traumatic head injury and apolipoprotein 4 in 236 community-dwelling elderly persons. A 10-fold increase in the risk of AD was associated with both apolipoprotein 4a nd a history of traumatic head injury, compared with a two-fold increase in risk with apolipoprotein 4 alone. Head injury in the absence of an apolipoprotein 4 allele did not increase risk. These data imply …

The Apolipoprotein Ε4 Allele In Parkinson's Disease With And Without Dementia, K. Marder, Gladys E. Maestre, L. Cote, H. Mejia, B. Alfaro, A. Halim, M. Tang, B. Tycko, R. Mayeux

School of Medicine Publications

The ϵ4 isoform of apolipoprotein E (Apo-E) may confer genetic susceptibility for familial and sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD). Because dementia in AD and Parkinson's disease (PD) share many biologic and clinical features, we determined the Apo-E genotypes for 79 patients with PD, 22 of whom were demented, and for 44 age-matched healthy elderly controls from the same community. We hypothesized that if the dementia was similar to AD, there would be a higher allele frequency of apolipoprotein ϵ4 (Apoϵ4) in demented PD patients compared with nondemented PD patients and controls. The ϵ4 allele frequency for PD without dementia was 0.132, …

Comparative Toxicities Of Aminonitriles, Timothy Lester Lacy Jun 1994

Comparative Toxicities Of Aminonitriles, Timothy Lester Lacy

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study examined the comparative toxicities and metabolism of four selected aminonitriles namely aminoacetonitrile, $\beta$-aminopropionitrile, $N,N\sp\prime$-dimethylaminopropionitrile, and $\beta ,\beta\sp\prime$-iminodipropionitrile. Various experiments in this study include time course of the metabolism of these nitriles to cyanide, thiocyanate, and cyanoacetic acid. All of the nitriles studied were metabolized to cyanide and thiocyanate and the levels of these metabolites remained at a significantly high level even 5 days after dosing. Except aminoacetonitrile all the nitriles were metabolized to cyanoacetic acid. Experiments on the role of vehicles on the toxicity and metabolism of nitriles showed that all of the vehicles studied significantly affected nitrile …

Pington, Jim Lemons, Judy Walton Jan 1994

Pington, Jim Lemons, Judy Walton

Digital Books

Former UTB/TSC physical education professor Werner Steinbach invented pington, a racquet sport similar to badminton, in the 1960s. But the sport lacked a textbook until Kinesiology Department (now the Health and Human Performance Department) faculty members Jim Lemons and Judith D. Walton formalized the rules of the game in print. In pington, athletes learn how to play this fast-paced game, which takes place on a badminton court and is played in singles, doubles and mixed doubles with special, locally made paddles. The text explains why pington rallies (played with a higher net than is used in badminton) tend to last …
