Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of age, gender, socioeconomic status (SES), academic achievement (education), and type of occupation, on the performance of the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE) Spanish version.

Material and methods: The BDAE was administered to a group of 156, 19 to 60 years old, occupationally active normal subjects.

Results: A descriptive analysis showed that some subjects (1 to 3%) scored in the pathological range of the centiles and profiles of the BDAE. A MANOVA (p < 0.05) demonstrated a significant effect of education over most of the BDAE subtests. Females outperformed males on some reading and writing subtests. SES had an effect over body part identification and naming. Significant differences were observed between younger and middle age groups in confrontation naming, oral and word picture reading. The older group scored significantly lower than the younger group in serial writing and sentences to dictation. No differences were observed between the older and the middle groups. Only oral spelling was affected by the type of occupation but a significant interaction of occupation and level of education was found.

Conclusions: Language tests are influenced by demographic variables, particularly education. Normal variability on the BDAE should …

Bayley Mental Psychomotor Developmental Indices Scores of 61 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Graduates were examined to investigate whether a predicted early developmental lag would occur followed by an increase or "catch-up" over time. Results indicated that no significant changes occurred over time; however, mental (Bayley MDI) scores were lower than motor (Bayley PDI) scores particularly at the 4- and 22-month test age. Gross motor, fine motor, social, cognitive, and language development was also investigated to see whether expected differences among these domains occurred over time. This thesis reviewed the special caloric requirements of preterm infants. The goal of this research was to investigate the feasibility of using the time required for infants to reach substantial feeding as a possible indicator of future developmental progress. The triage of birth weight, gestational age, and days to first substantive oral feeding were highly significant in predicting development through 12 months of age. However, none of the independent variables contributed significant unique variance in predicting developmental outcome.

Selective mutism is a consistent refusal to use spoken language in specific social situations. This can occur in a particular environment or with specific individuals. A collaboration of four case studies was used to study the possible etiologies, characteristics, and intervention strategies associated with selective mutism. Four children from public school campuses in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas were subjects in this investigation as well as teachers and parents.

The apolipoprotein 4 allele increases the risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), but cerebral deposition of B-amyloid with age, a genetic mutation, or head injury may contribute to the pathogenesis of this disease. We examined the risks of AD associated with traumatic head injury and apolipoprotein 4 in 236 community-dwelling elderly persons. A 10-fold increase in the risk of AD was associated with both apolipoprotein 4a nd a history of traumatic head injury, compared with a two-fold increase in risk with apolipoprotein 4 alone. The ϵ4 isoform of apolipoprotein E (Apo-E) may confer genetic susceptibility for familial and sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD). Because dementia in AD and Parkinson's disease (PD) share many biologic and clinical features, we determined the Apo-E genotypes for 79 patients with PD, 22 of whom were demented, and for 44 age-matched healthy elderly controls from the same community. We hypothesized that if the dementia was similar to AD, there would be a higher allele frequency of apolipoprotein ϵ4 (Apoϵ4) in demented PD patients compared with nondemented PD patients and controls. This study examined the comparative toxicities and metabolism of four selected aminonitriles namely aminoacetonitrile, $\beta$-aminopropionitrile, $N,N\sp\prime$-dimethylaminopropionitrile, and $\beta ,\beta\sp\prime$-iminodipropionitrile. Various experiments in this study include time course of the metabolism of these nitriles to cyanide, thiocyanate, and cyanoacetic acid. All of the nitriles studied were metabolized to cyanide and thiocyanate and the levels of these metabolites remained at a significantly high level even 5 days after dosing. Except aminoacetonitrile all the nitriles were metabolized to cyanoacetic acid. Consecutive medical records of 10,622 births were viewed, January, 1962, through December, 1972, from McAllen General Hospital, McAllen, Texas. The overall incidence of birth defects was consistent with rates for the United States. Birth defects detected in Spanish surnamed were significantly higher than for non-Spanish surnamed. Spanish surnamed bore eight times more defects of the central nervous system than non Spanish surnamed. Males had significantly more defects than females, and had almost seven times more defects of the urogenital system. The most distinctive feature of this survey was the high incidence of atelectasis.
