Using chlorine as a drinking water disinfectant may have potential health effects due to its reactivity with organic amino nitrogen compounds found in the stomach. Organic N-chloramines have been shown to form in the stomachs of laboratory rats. The possible reactions of N-chloramines in the stomach fluid were examined in this study using a model radiolabeled N-chloramine. 36Cl-N-Chloropiperidine, was synthesized and purified to remove 36Cl-chloride. Stomach fluid was obtained from Sprague-Dawley rats which had been first fasted for 24 or 48 hours and then administered 3 mL of deionized water. Psychologists' volunteering behavior and attitudes toward psychotherapy research were studied using a mail survey. A random sample of 248 male and 248 female doctoral-level members of Division 29 (Psychotherapy) of the American Psychological Association served as subjects. The cover letter requesting their participation in this study contained the systematic manipulation of variables believed to affect volunteering behavior: recruiter gender, normative nature of volunteering for the study, and perceived social importance of the study. The therapist variables of gender, age, and years of experience were also studied in order to determine if volunteerism might result in biased sampling across these variables. …

This descriptive study focused on the bureaucratic, professional, and service role conceptions of nurses. It was hypothesized that there are significant differences in the ideal and actual perceptions of these role orientations among baccalaureate nursing students, their nursing faculty, and their clinical nurse mentors. The three subscales of Pieta's 1976 Nursing Role Conception Scale (NRC) were used. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if statistically significant differences existed in the gingival health of subjects who brushed with a rotary electric toothbrush (Rota-dentR when compared to a conventional toothbrush (Oral B-35R). A randomized, two group research design was employed using forty subjects. At baseline and at two week intervals for six weeks, gingivitis and supragingival dental plaque were measured by the Loe and Silness Gingival Index and the O'Leary Plaque Index, respectively. This study investigates the effectiveness of computer assisted instruction on the oral hygiene status of children. Over a one month period, as measured by the Personal Hygiene Performance Index, sixty-five fifth grade students participated in one of three intact groups: oral health computer assisted instruction, traditional oral health instruction, or no oral health instructions. Oral health instructions were identical in content for computer assisted and traditional lecture formats. During pretest evaluations, students were presented with a dental kit containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and an oral health instruction pamphlet. The capacity of parents to act as health educators in the home is proposed as a functional piece of Orem's dependent care agency construct. A new data collection instrument, the Health Education Questionnaire, was developed to explore the conceptual dimensions of an intellectual pre-production phase of health action-taking. Parents' self-reported knowledge and beliefs regarding selected health topics, as well as their perceptions of ego strength and valuing health were proposed as independent factors in dependent care agency related to health education in the home. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences between the unique learning needs of expectant parents and those perceived by childbirth educators. A purposive sample of 40 expectant parents and ten childbirth educators completed the Expectant Parents Learning Needs Tool (EPLNT) and a demographic inventory developed by the researcher. Subjects were classified into five groups based on their status as first-time fathers, repeat fathers, first-time mothers, repeat mothers, and childbirth educators. This study was designed to evaluate short-term temporal and spatial components of phytoplankton variability within a tidal estuarine system, in reference to natural changes in the local environment.

Multiple water samples were collected weekly from October to December 1984 at 4 stations in different branches, or sections, of the Elizabeth River. Collection of chlorophyll~ data was structured to fit an analysis of variance, while the phytoplankton species and their environmental relationships were analyzed using multivariate techniques.

Lower chlorophyll a concentrations from 0.75 to 2.87 ug/1 were characteristic of the Main Stem and Southern Branch, while higher values of 1.27 …

Two ataxia telangiectasia patients with unusual clinical and cellular features are described. Cultured fibroblasts and PHA stimulated lymphocytes from these two patients showed a smaller increase of radiosensitivity than cells from other A-T patients, as measured by colony forming ability or induced chromosome damage respectively, after exposure to ionising radiation. The response of DNA synthesis to irradiation of these cells was, however, the same as for other A-T patients. Cells from a third patient with some clinical features of A-T but with a very protracted course also showed low levels of radiation induced chromosome damage, but colony forming ability and …

Virginia Woolf's experiences as a manic-depressive influenced her vision of reality and, in tum, her aesthetics. Manic-depression is a "cyclic" illness-cyclic in the sense that the manic-depressive moves alternately between two extreme psychological states. Subjects consisted of ten well conditioned male volunteers with an age range of 21-35 years. Cultured human keratinocytes were grown in vitro for transplantation purposes in case of severe burns. Single keratinocytes were harvested from human epidermis and grown in culture flasks such that multilayered sheets of keratinocyte cells were harvestable in approximately three weeks. In order to evaluate cultured epidermis for equivalency with normal human epidermis, biochemical and histological studies were performed. Thin sections of cultured epidermis were shown to be composed of cells that had undergone developmental differentiation, but not terminal differentiation. Biochemical analyses of keratin and prekeratin proteins isolated from cultured epidermis indicated that cultured keratinocytes have electrophoretic patterns similar to keratins/prekeratins …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of myofascial release (MFR) compared to ultrasound (US) in treating musculoskeletal pain. Data in the form of number of trigger points, active range-of-motion of the affected joint, pain scale measurement, and a Treatment Response Questionnaire score, were collected.

The Mann-Whitney U value supported that the MFR group outranked the US group 47 percent when ranking the percent change in trigger point number from pre to post treatment.

An investigation was undertaken to synthesize and evaluate the cardiovascular activity of two imidazole ring systems. Imidazoles with hypotensive activity would provide novel potential antihypertensive drugs. These novel structures may also find use as chemical probes in the study of the cardiovascular system and as prototypes for other potential cardiovascular agents.

The histamine derivative, 7,7-dipyridyl-4,5,6,7-tetrahydroimidazo-[4,5-c]pyridine (ligand l), was demonstrated to possess significant hypotensive activity in laboratory rats. A 15 mg/Kg dose of ligand 1 produces a statistically significant decrease in blood pressure when injected IP. This hypotensive effect is also associated with marked increase in heart rate. This study compared stressors and coping mechanisms identified by spouses of myocardial infarction (MI) patients in a close-ended, self-administered questionnaire (SAS) and an open-ended, nurse-administered questionnaire (NAS). Twenty female participants were divided into two groups and completed the NAS, SAS, and demographic information. The purpose of dividing the group was to explore possible experimenter effect. One group was administered the NAS preceding the SAS. The second group completed the SAS preceding the NAS. The purpose of this study was to explore the image of nursing as portrayed in articles published in Nursing Outlook from 1960-1979. A descriptive study, with content analysis, was conducted using articles concerned with professionalism or nursing education published in Nursing Outlook from 1960-1979 (a time identified as negative for societal images of nursing). This study examined the perceptions of 43 head nurse participants from private, voluntary and government hospital settings. Utilizing a tool adapted by the researcher, the Head Nurse Role Questionnaire (HNRQ), the study sought to explore five areas of job context: Job Variability, Job Expertise, Job Definition, Job Capacity and Job Incentives. Differences in perceptions were analyzed utilizing descriptive statistics and Analyses of Variance. Acrosin is an acrosomal enzyme which is reported to be involved in sperm penetration through cumulus, zona, and ooplasma. This enzyme has been reported to be significantly lower in sperm of infertile men compared to sperm of fertile men. The acrosin assay which has been developed can be used for studies in patients with suspected infertility and may be used on a fraction of most semen specimens being evaluated in a clinical andrology laboratory.

An investigation was conducted to determine if statistically significant differences in enamel abrasion occurred when molar specimens were air polished (AP) and rubber cup polished (RCP). Thirty human molars were randomly divided into two groups. Molar buccal surfaces were masked longitudinally to provide control surfaces. Each polishing technique was applied for two minutes and thirty seconds on fifteen exposed enamel surfaces. Buccal enamel surfaces were divided into coronal and cervical sections for microscopic review. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence a Prepared Childbirth couple's decision to utilize epidural anesthesia for labor and delivery. Review of the literature indicated a high correlation between epidural use for uncomplicated labors and deliveries and a high incidence of maternal complications and low neonatal neurological and behavioral scores.

This study examined whether the factors of pregravid weight, total prenatal weight gain at twenty-eight weeks and maternal age correlated with the development of pregnancy-induced hypertension in the third trimester. An ex post facto chart review of low risk primigravidas attending a public health maternity clinic was performed. A multiple regression correlation procedure demonstrated no significant correlation between the variables. The effectiveness of stimulation therapy for the cognitively impaired elderly living in an institution was assessed. Residents with varying degrees of cognitive impairment were treated with twenty, thirty-minute daily periods of reality orientation, reminiscence, resocialization, remotivation, and other stimulating therapies and were compared with a control group_ receiving no intervention. The distribution and concentration of Ceratium species, between Cape Hatteras, North Carolina and Long Island, New York ls discussed in relation to specific physical factors and the development of a phytoplankton bloom. The progression of high Ceratium counts Is discussed for the Bight areas of New York, Delaware, and the Chesapeake Bay (April through June). The concentration of Ceratium species declined after June, with highest concentrations along the New York and Delaware coast-lines. This study examined the expectations and perceptions of 63 military nurse participants from all levels of the nurse hierarchy for the role of the military nurse middle manager. Utilizing a tool developed by the researcher, the MMRQ, the study sought to explore role clarity and the importance of the management principles: planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling. Relationships and differences in nursing perceptions were analyzed using Pearson Correlation and Discriminant Analysis. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if a significant difference exists between dental health attitudes of children who are exposed to a dental health fair and children who are not exposed to a dental health fair. All consenting students, in grades four through six . from two Hampton public schools, completed a Dental Health Questionnaire designed to assess attitudes toward dental health. One day after the experimental group participated in the dental health fair, both groups were post-tested using the same questionnaire.
