Asian's Conservative Attitudes Toward Sex And Its Impacts On Women's Sexual Practices And Reproductive Health, C Roomruangwong, Cn. Epperson

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Asians, in general, are more conservative about sexual and reproduction-related issues than individuals from Western countries. These conservative attitudes often lead to reticence to communicate about sexual and reproductive issues, hindering attempts to promote sex education or contraceptive knowledge, which can heighten the risk for sexually transmitted disease, unintended pregnancy, induced abortion, and emotional problems. It is critical for health care providers working with Asian women to understand them within this cultural context in order to provide gynecologic and reproductive care with sensitivity and compassion. Although this issue has been mentioned in some studies conducted in Asia or with Asian …

Evaluation Of Dna Extraction By Boiling Method For Pcr-Based Detection Of Pneumocystis Jirovecii In Sputum Samples From Immunocompromised Patients, T Tia, U Pattanawong, N Kongpolprom, C. Putaporntip

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Problem/background : Pneumocystis jirovecii can be detected by staining methods but the sensitivity is low. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique is more sensitive and accurate but it requires high quality of DNA template. Although DNA prepared by boiling method may not generate high quality of DNA, it has been used for extraction of DNA from several organisms such as malaria, several bacteria and fungi for PCR detection with favorable results. Because boiling method is not time-consuming and inexpensive, we evaluated whether or not DNA of P. jirovecii could be prepared from sputum samples and amplifiable by diagnostic PCR. Results were …

Injury To The Epiphyseal Plate, N. Limpaphayom

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Epiphyseal plate or physis is a unique structure of the immature skeleton. It comprises chondrocytes in columnar formation. The chondrocyte maturation process in the physis is the responsible mechanism for longitudinal bone growth through endochondral ossification process. The blood supply to the physis can be divided to two major systems. Understanding of the injury to the physis and the blood supply is crucial for clinicians to effectively treat this particular injury in the childhood and adolescence. Injury classification scheme is based on radiographic appearances which lead to treatment planning and possible subsequent complications. Treatment of the physis injury requires the …

Acromioclavicular Joint Injury, T. Tanpowpong

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Acromioclavicular joint injury is common among young active individuals. Stability of this complex structure composes of muscles (deltoid and trapezius), ligaments (acromioclavicular and coracoclavicular) and joint capsule. Clinical and radiographic examinations are crucial for the diagnosis of this injury. Non operative treatment is indicated for type I and II injury. Surgical treatment is, however, indicated for type IV, V and VI injury. Treatment for type III injury is still controversy. Methods of treatment fall into 3 categories, namely: fixation of the acromioclavicular joint, fixation of the coracoclavicular joint and ligament reconstruction. Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Os odontoideum is a small round or oval corticated ossicle with a smooth cortical border and no body union to the body of the axis. Posttraumatic injury of the cervical spine is one of the etiologies. We reported a 28-year-old man patient with os odontoideum presented with a trivial hyperflexion cervical trauma. He developed neurogenic shock and central cord syndrome. This case supports the theory that previous trauma is the etiology of the abnormality. Surgical management alleviated his symptom. Occipitocervical fusion with C1 laminectomy was successfully achieved in this case. Odontoid nonunion is a potentially a serious situation. Patients can …

Histaminergic Neurotransmission And Tourette’S Syndrome, K. Krusong

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Tourette’s Syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder, with onset in children. It is characterized by multiple motor and phonic tics. The pathophysiology of TS is not well understood. Previous studies suggested the etiology involving the abnormal dopaminergic neurotransmission, abnormalities in basal ganglia-related circuits and genetics in TS. In 2010, Ercan-Sencicek G, et al has identified a rare functional mutation in the Histidine Decarboxylase (HDC) gene in the family with high density of TS. HDC gene encodes L-Histidine decarboxylase, which is a rate-limiting step enzyme in histamine biosynthesis. HDC was found at high levels in mouse’s hypothalamus and striatum. Histamine receptors …
