The Participant's Perception Of The Contribution Of Lyengar Yoga To Their Health And Well-Being, Ann Dragon
The Participant's Perception Of The Contribution Of Lyengar Yoga To Their Health And Well-Being, Ann Dragon
Theses : Honours
To date little research has been conducted to substantiate the many anecdotal claims that yoga improves both physical and mental health. Berger and Owen (1992) demonstrated that yoga practice could enhance mood state. Mind-body exercise modalities, such as tai chi and yoga, potentially offer significant benefit in the areas of exercise rehabilitation and health promotion strategy (LaForge, 1997). Yoga is steadily gaining popularity amongst western culture with an increasing number of people participating in this mind-body exercise modality. Investigating the perceived contribution of regular yoga practice to health and well-being could uncover a number of positive 'indicators towards exercise adherence …

Home health agencies have been slow to employ and capitalize on the care provided by the nurse practitioner. The potential contributions of this advanced practice nurse are far-reaching. However, no studies have assessed the role possibilities for the nurse practitioner in the home health field. The purpose of this study was to examine the need for and define the role of the nurse practitioner in home health care. Two research questions guided the study: What is the role of the nurse practitioner in home health care as perceived by home health nurse practitioners and staff nurses and what are the …

Cd40-Cd40 Ligand Interactions In Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis And Multiple Sclerosis., Koen Gerritse, Jon D. Laman, Randolph J. Noelle, Alejandro Aruffo
Dartmouth Scholarship
We investigated the role of CD40-CD40 ligand (CD40L) interactions in multiple sclerosis (MS) and experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE). Activated helper T cells expressing CD40L (gp39) surface protein were found in MS patient brain sections, but not in brain tissue sections of normal controls or patients with other neurological disease. CD40L-positive cells were co-localized with CD40-bearing cells in active lesions (perivascular infiltrates). Most of these CD40-bearing cells proved to be of the monocytic lineage (macrophages or microglial cells), and relatively few were B cells. To functionally evaluate CD40-CD40L interactions, EAE was elicited in mice by means of proteolipid-peptide immunization. Treatment with …

Under Blue Skies : The Social Construction Of Intellectual Disability In Western Australia, Errol Cocks (Ed.)
Research outputs pre 2011
Research into the history of people with intellectual disabilities in Western Australia has been a sporadic undertaking. Scholarship to date has been mainly institutional in character and often undertaken as an adjunct to the study of mental illness. The people themselves have remained mostly invisible. In 1989, the Editors conceived of a social history research project in which, for the first time, an attempt would be made to document the lives of people with intellectual disabilities in Western Australia The project would also aim to describe the institutional, social, political and professional history we identify with mainstream historical scholarship...

Information Control And Security Policy In Health Care Information Systems, Binshan Lin, Lawrence Clark
Information Control And Security Policy In Health Care Information Systems, Binshan Lin, Lawrence Clark
Journal of International Information Management
The reliance on information systems forces the health care organizations to consider two security management issues: information control and security policy. The objective of this article is to examine a direction to effectively support and enhance the health care delivery through information systems in hospitals. An integrated focus is provided through an information control framework for analyzing the three control elements: accessibility, confidentiality, and integrity. The security policy involves three aspects: prevention of unauthorized access into the system, controlling the input and output of the system, and monitoring the health care information systems. The framework has implications for research beyond …

Health Care Information Systems Management: Structure And Infrastructure, Binshan Lin
Journal of International Information Management
The practice of medicine is inextricably entwined with the management of health care information system (HCIS). Major problems with HCIS are that it has not evolved from the needs of end users, and lacks of an organizational base^ to manage the HCIS in the health care environment. The object of this paper is to examine a direction to effectively support and enhance the health care activities through managing HCIS. An integrated focus is provided through a framework for analyzing the structure and infrastructure of HCIS in hospitals.

Impact Of Substance Abuse: Human Resource Strategies For The Hospitality Industry, Patricia J. Silfies, Frederick J. Demicco
Impact Of Substance Abuse: Human Resource Strategies For The Hospitality Industry, Patricia J. Silfies, Frederick J. Demicco
Hospitality Review
No hospitality organizations are immune from the negative effects of substance abuse in the workplace. Ownters and managers must confront the problem head on and, in order to accomplish this, they must be in possession of the facts regarding the problem, and regarding options for dealing with the problem in the most appropriate manner for their individual organizations. The authors include an assessment of this problem as well as a summary review of procedures for positive management of a potentially negative situation.

The Use Of Self Blood Glucose Monitoring And Its Relationship To Effective Management For People With Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, Maureen Unsworth
The Use Of Self Blood Glucose Monitoring And Its Relationship To Effective Management For People With Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, Maureen Unsworth
Theses : Honours
It is believed that people who effectively self manage their own diabetes will achieve higher levels of health and well being (Pender, 1987). Although diabetes education has increased rapidly in the last 10 years, the emphasis has been placed on increasing people's knowledge of diabetes as a medical condition, which does not necessarily ensure effective self management of diabetes. Previous research suggests that self blood glucose monitoring (SBOM) is an effective tool for promoting the use of blood glucose levels as a basis for initiating behaviour changes related to eating, exercise and insulin dosage. Yet, while most people with diabetes …

A descriptive study was designed to answer the following research questions: 1) What are the postpartum health education needs perceived by first-time mothers in the hospital setting and in the primary care setting, and 2) What are the postpartum health education needs of new mothers perceived by health care providers in the hospital setting and in the primary care setting. Mercer's Theory of Maternal Role Attainment was used to guide the research. Forty-nine subjects participated in the study. The samples consisted of first-time mothers in the hospital (n=22), first-time mothers in the primary care setting (n=15), hospital health care providers …
Disparity Between Reimbursement-Driven Practice And Humanistic Values Of Occupational Therapy., Janice P. Burke, Joanne C. Cassidy
Disparity Between Reimbursement-Driven Practice And Humanistic Values Of Occupational Therapy., Janice P. Burke, Joanne C. Cassidy
Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers
In January 1990, clinicians, educators, and researchers met at the Directions for the Future Symposium in San Diego to delineate, discuss, and debate a wide range of economic, political, and social issues that are influencing the evolution of occupational therapy practice and education. By examining these factors in an open and thorough way, therapists believe they will be able to develop proactive positions that will ensure the continued well-being of the field. In this paper, we will consider two distinctly opposing forces that dramatically affect and present considerable obstacles to occupational therapists. On the one hand, occupational therapists are taught …

Relationships Among Perceived Stress, Trait Anger, Modes Of Anger Expression And Health Status Of College Men And Women, Sandra Thomas, R.L. Williams
Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Nursing
Relationships among perceived stress, trait anger (general propensity to become angry), modes of anger expression, and health status were examined in a sample of 720 college students, using Caplan's conceptualization of stress as the study's framework. Propensity toward anger was assessed by the 10-item form of the Trait Anger Scale (Spielberger et al.), modes of anger expression were assessed by the Framingham Anger Scales, perceived stress was operationalized by the Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen, Kamarck, and Mermelstein), and current health status was assessed by Ware's 9-item Current Health Scale. As hypothesized, stress was a positive correlate of trait anger and …

Teaching Critical And Creative Thinking Skills As Part Of The Technical Communications Curriculum, Anne Harrington
Teaching Critical And Creative Thinking Skills As Part Of The Technical Communications Curriculum, Anne Harrington
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
I incorporated critical thinking instruction in the writing curriculum by using three writing projects: journal writing, a policy paper on AIDS, and an assignment to evaluate grammar checkers. In their journal writing students both generated and evaluated ideas. In the AIDS project, they reinforced these convergent and divergent thinking skills within the context of a real-world issue. For the software project, students practiced thinking skills in an arena that was more technical and objective, but in which they were evaluating fundamental writing criteria. These diverse assignments, based on a philosophically compatible approach to the teaching of writing, helped students develop …

The Social Impact Of Oral And Facial Pain In An Industrial Population, Rosnah Binti Zain
Prof. Dr. Rosnah Binti Zain
The aim of this study is to determine the social impact of oral and facial pain in a sample involving an industrial population. Out of a total of 355 subjects interviewed, nearly one-half claimed to have oral and facial pain in the previous one month prior to the survey. The most common type of pain was that related to hot or cold fluids or sweet things followed by toothache. On the average, the pain lasted for 4.2 days (SD = 4.9) per person in the past one-month. About one in five persons with pain reported that it was severe enough …
