Trauma-informed care (TIC) has become increasingly common in discussions regarding women’s health. TIC refers to a clinical approach that implements compassion, respect, and acknowledges the impact of trauma on patients. In the United States, pelvic exams are routinely performed on women over 21 for gynecological abnormalities. Many of these women present with histories of post-traumatic stress disorder, sexual violence, intimate partner violence, and other psychological comorbidities. Background: The current study sought to identify individual and synergistic relationships between bullying victimization, perpetration, and mental health outcomes. Methods: Data from n=19,610 middle and high school students participating in the Rhode Island Student Survey were analyzed. Multivariable regression analysis was used to determine if being bullied in school, being cyberbullied, bullying others in school, and cyberbullying others were associated with depressive symptoms and suicide ideation. Synergistic effects across bullying modalities and bully involvement were also assessed. Results: Relative to students uninvolved in bullying, odds of suicide ideation were approximately 5 times greater among students who were both bullied in …

Individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI) are commonly discharged from outpatient occupational therapy (OT) services after working on functional impairments and not occupations that are meaningful. Without rehabilitation of meaningful occupations, quality of life (QOL) can be impacted. In community settings, OT services have more flexibility to work on more meaningful occupations because they are not limited by the billing constraints in traditional outpatient therapy clinics. This poster presents a scoping review looking at traditional rehabilitation interventions and compares them with non-traditional rehabilitation interventions and their impacts on quality of life.

Research suggests a lack of support for parents of children diagnosed with neurodivergent conditions. Receiving a neurodivergent diagnosis can impact both the child and their caregiver’s mental health and well-being. Implementation of parent-to-parent support groups for caregivers of children with neurodivergent conditions have been found to reduce stress and anxiety. The more educated a parent is regarding their child’s diagnosis, the better they can effectively support and advocate for their child. This can create a reduction in stress and anxiety. Groups also provide a space for caretakers to empathize, express their emotions, and share the skills and knowledge they have. …

Background: Dental stimuli can evoke fear after being paired - or conditioned - with aversive outcomes (e.g., pain). Pre-exposing the stimuli before conditioning can impair dental fear learning via a phenomenon known as latent inhibition. Theory suggests changes in expected relevance and attention are two mechanisms responsible for latent inhibition. In the proposed research, we test whether pre-exposure dose and degree of pre-exposure novelty potentiate changes in expected relevance and attention to a pre-exposed stimulus. We also assess if the manipulations alter latent inhibition and explore the possible moderating role of individual differences in pain sensitivity.

In this scoping review, PRISMA-ScR guidelines were adhered to, and a transcriptomic methodology was adopted, with the protocol registered on the Open Science Framework. Regular waterpipe smoking (Reg-WPS) is well recognized for its deleterious effect on the heart. However, there is a paucity of experimental studies on the impact of occasional waterpipe smoking (Occ-WPS), also known as nondaily smoking, versus Reg-WPS on cardiac homeostasis, and the mechanisms underlying these effects. Primary care is crucial to the health of people with mental illness. However, there is limited information on their reported engagement in this setting. This study surveyed 100 people with mental illness who had a general practitioner or a general practitioner and a case manager from a tertiary mental health service to determine their engagement level with their GP and what interventions they received to manage their health. Forty-four per cent had their psychotropic medications primarily prescribed by their GP, and 58% reported visiting their GP for physical health problems. This study aimed to determine, through the use of a highly sensitive statistical tool, whether real changes in performance were present; and compare the rates of meaningful variations in strength, speed, and power parameters at different time-points during the competitive season in national team rugby players. Thirty-two players were assessed 5 times across the season using the following tests: squat jump and countermovement jump tests; 30-m sprint velocity; and one-repetition maximum (1RM) in the half-squat and bench-press exercises. Self-location, also known as the ego-center or the seat of attention, is the sense of where the “I” or subject is experienced relative to the body. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was a groundbreaking moment in the United States healthcare system. It affected many different aspects of the system, including access to primary care professionals. Primary care professionals provide a key role in American’s health, especially when it comes to preventative care. With one-third of Americans experiencing barriers to such access, a solution is desperately needed to increase said access. These barriers are especially profound in low-income, underserved areas such as the Appalachian regions of Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
