Voice Disorders In Teachers, Hsin-Yu Chien, Feng-Chuan Lin, Yu-Lin Huang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Teachers have higher occupational voice demands than the general populations. In addition to speaking intensively in a noisy environment for a long period of time, the lack of vocal hygiene education and vocal training experience will lead to high-risk for developing voice disorders. Although voice disorders are not life-threatening diseases, it affects teachers in many aspects. In addition to impacting teachers' personal physical and psychological condition, it also interferes with the quality of students' learning, which then bring down teachers' teaching and life quality, and even more so on teachers' mental health and career path. In order to help teachers …

A Focal Survey Of Medical Professionals' Conceptions Of Gastrostomy In Patients With Dysphagia After Stroke In Taiwan, Sheng-Hao Cheng, Yi-Ching Chen, Ming-Yen Hsiao, Tyng-Guey Wang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Background and aims: People with dysphagia may require long-term tube feeding to maintain adequate nutrition. In Taiwan, nasogastric (NG) tubes are more commonly used than gastrostomy tubes. This practice is inconsistent with international treatment guidelines. Medical professionals' attitudes toward treatment may influence patients' decisions. Therefore, we designed a questionnaire to assess whether medical professionals' conceptions of gastrostomy are consistent with current international treatment principles. Methods: We used an online questionnaire hosted on "Google Forms" to collect medical professionals' conceptions of gastrostomy. Societies related to dysphagia distributed copies of the questionnaire to their members. The professionals included specialists (physiatrists, otolaryngologists, oral …

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
One quarter of veterans returning from the 1990–1991 Persian Gulf War have developed Gulf War Illness (GWI) with chronic pain, fatigue, cognitive and gastrointestinal dysfunction. Exertion leads to characteristic, delayed onset exacerbations that are not relieved by sleep. We have modeled exertional exhaustion by comparing magnetic resonance images from before and after submaximal exercise. One third of the 27 GWI participants had brain stem atrophy and developed postural tachycardia after exercise (START: Stress Test Activated Reversible Tachycardia). The remainder activated basal ganglia and anterior insulae during a cognitive task (STOPP: Stress Test Originated Phantom Perception). Here, the role of attention …

Is Vertical Orientation Ability And Visual Feedback Training Strategy Useful For Pusher Syndrome After Stroke: A System Reviewarticle, Chien-Hsun Lee
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Stroke patients with pusher syndrome (PS) have a longer recovery time than those without this disorder. This special syndrome causes difficulty in maintaining balance when sitting or standing, with sufferers "pushing and leaning" automatically to hemi-side. PS patients may also have cognition impairment, hemi-neglect, or aphasia. Alleviating all these factors requires extensive training for therapists, however, few undergo such training. Wang et. al. published a reviewarticle article in Taiwan Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in 2005, and the conclusions drawn were: 1) PS patients have abnormal subjective posture and vertical orientation ability; 2) training strategies that use visual feedback …

Background: Shoulder dysfunction is common after nerve-sparing selective neck dissection (SND). We aimed to assess the upper extremity function and shoulder pain in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) after SND. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled 38 patients with HNCs after SND and evaluated shoulder active range of motion (ROM), muscle strength, pain, and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Score (DASH) questionnaire for upper extremity function on operative and non-operative sides. Results: Significant reductions in shoulder motions, muscle strength, and higher level of shoulder pain were observed on the operative side after SND. Worse …

The animal model has been widely used and contributed vastly to the scientific research over the years. While it can be used as an alternate subject in a study, the selection of the animal is crucial to assess and investigate the influence of the environment and genes on the pathogenesis of a disease. Many factors contribute to the choosing of the animal. They can be ranged from the similarities with the modelled object, easily looked after with less expensive cost, good reproductive performance, ability to produce blood and tissue samples, well-known genetic composition, and the status of the disease can …
