The Contribution Of Enactments To Structural Family Therapy: A Process Study, Stephanie Fellenberg
The Contribution Of Enactments To Structural Family Therapy: A Process Study, Stephanie Fellenberg
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
In an era where the effectiveness of many forms of psychotherapy has been thoroughly examined, the focus of many researchers has shifted from investigating outcome to exploring therapeutic processes. Process studies serve to identify the active ingredients of therapy—that is, those interventions that bring about in-session changes. This process study examines the relationship between the use of enactments, a structural family therapy intervention, and in-session change as observed over the course of the session. Change was measured by the amount of change that occurred in the core problem dynamic, that is, the most prominent pattern of dysfunctional family …

We agree with Ikeda et al that the absence of systolic hypertension may provide some discriminatory power towards exclusion of brain lesions, be they ischaemic, haemorrhagic, or space occupying in nature.1 However, we disagree with them that neurological examination of patients with impaired consciousness is often a waste of time and resources and can delay diagnosis.

Patient education is central to the practice of all health professionals. Pharmacists often use printed educational material, such as consumer medicine information, as adjuncts to verbal communication and education of patients about their medications. A relatively large proportion of the Australian population have low literacy skills and cannot read or understand written patient educational materials which are typically written at levels equivalent to year 9 and above. By using simple readability assessment tools such as RAIN, SMOG or FOG and the UK's Department of Health 'Toolkit for producing patient information' health professionals can ensure that printed educational materials are simple …

The Physiologic Health Care Needs Of Hiv-Infected Black Men On Admission To An Aids-Dedicated Nursing Home., Sheldon Fields
Sheldon D. Fields
The purpose of this study is to describe the physiologic health care needs of HIV-infected Black men on admission to an AIDS-dedicated nursing home. Participants were 68 Black men aged 26 to 60 years who were admitted to an AIDS-dedicated nursing home in the southern New England area between 1995 and 1999. The participants were very ill and weak on their admission to the nursing home, with most having diagnoses of AIDS (n = 65), an average Karnofsky Performance Scale score of 44 (SD = 14.90), and some degree of mental impairment. The late-stage of disease of the participants was …

Environmental Planning, R. Steven Konkel
Steve Konkel
Our understanding of the importance of healthy ecosystems and the impact of people on the natural and the built environment continues to grow. The need for stewardship to preserve, protect, and enhance the natural environment and promote healthy populations is increasingly seen as a universal responsibility of environmental health and safety (EHS) professionals.

The Maturing Of Hormesis As A Credible Dose-Response Model, Edward J. Calabrese Ph.D.
The Maturing Of Hormesis As A Credible Dose-Response Model, Edward J. Calabrese Ph.D.
Edward Calabrese
Hormesis is a dose-response phenomenon that has received little recognition, credibility and acceptance as evidenced by its absence from major toxicological/risk assessment texts, governmental regulatory dose-response modeling risk assessment, and non-visibility in major professional toxicological society national meetings. This paper traces the historical evolution of the hormetic dose-response hypothesis, why this model is not only credible but also more common than the widely accepted threshold model in direct comparative evaluation, and how the toxicological community made a critical error in rejecting hormesis, a rejection sustained over 70 years.

Hormesis At The National Toxicology Program (Ntp): Evidence Of Hormetic Dose Response In Ntp Dose-Range Studies, Edward J. Calabrese Ph.D., Linda A. Baldwin
Edward Calabrese
The National Toxicology Program (NTP) dose-ranging studies typically employ five dosages and a concurrent control and are conducted for 2- and 13-week exposure periods. Because five doses are employed it suggested the possibilities of the occurrence of sub-NOAEL dose in many of these bioassays and of evaluating the occurrence of hormesis within the NTP bioassay. As a result, 59 environmentally relevant agents in the NTP toxicity database were assessed for their capacity to affect hormetic dose responses for growth as measured by change in weight gain. Hormetic effects were observed with 51 (88%) of the 58 agents evaluated. When considered …

African American Student Athletes' Perceptions Of Career Transition In Sport: A Qualitative And Visual Elicitation, Keith Harrison
African American Student Athletes' Perceptions Of Career Transition In Sport: A Qualitative And Visual Elicitation, Keith Harrison
Dr. C. Keith Harrison
This study focuses on 26 African American athletes and explores their perceptions of athletic career transition. Participants consisted of student athletes from a United States National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division IIA institution in the Southeastern region. Participants completed the Life After Sports Scale (LASS), a 58-item inventory utilized to qualitatively and quantitatively examine seven different domains which influence perceptions of the career transition process. The scope of this inquiry examines the qualitative domain of the LASS in which participants were visually primed with a narrative description of a student athlete that has made transition out of sport successfully. Five …

Aggressive, Multifocal Oral Verrucous Leukoplakia: Proliferative Verrucous Leukoplakia Or Not?, Ghazali N., Bakri M. M., Rosnah Binti Zain
Prof. Dr. Rosnah Binti Zain
Background: Some oral verrucal lesions may constitute parts of the clinicopathological spectrum of proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL). Because of its idiopathic yet sinister nature, it is possible that PVL may exist in other populations. The aim of this study was to review the clinicopathological features of persistent, multifocal, oral verrucal lesions in Malaysian population. Methods: Patients with multifocal oral verrucal lesions were selected from surgical and histopathological records. Results: Nine patients of diverse ethnicity with 43 biopsies were reviewed. The mean age at the presentation was 62 years. The most frequent sites affected were gum, sulci, cheek and tongue. Indulgence …
Dengue, Aedes Aegypti, And Hurricane Reconstruction In The Caribbean And Central America: Prevention And Control Following A Natural Disaster, Frank Cortez Flores
Dengue, Aedes Aegypti, And Hurricane Reconstruction In The Caribbean And Central America: Prevention And Control Following A Natural Disaster, Frank Cortez Flores
Frank Cortez Flores
Abstract: Dengue is currently the most important vector-borne viral disease affecting people, in terms of both morbidity and mortality. Repeated epidemics of dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever afflicting millions of individuals occur annually in tropical and subtropical areas of the world, including The Caribbean and Central America, inhabited by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
Accordingly, the main purpose of this study was to identify and address the dominating factors influencing the resurgence of dengue fever following a natural disaster such as a hurricane.
This study also depicted an arguable approach to dengue surveillance as well as described existing efforts to prevent, …

Crisis Intervention Services In Juvenile Detention Centers, Charles A. Sanislow, John Chapman, Thomas H. Mcglashan
Crisis Intervention Services In Juvenile Detention Centers, Charles A. Sanislow, John Chapman, Thomas H. Mcglashan
Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.
The prevalence of mental disorders among juvenile detainees is estimated to be as high as 60 percent, and reports suggest that adolescents who are detained have a three- to fourfold risk of suicide. The transfer of juveniles who commit serious offenses to the adult legal system and the problems of overwhelmed child care agencies appear to have precipitated a shift in the composition of populations in juvenile detention centers. Adolescents are often detained for minor legal charges that occur in the context of severe behavioral problems and family stress. We report on a collaborative venture between a state juvenile justice …

THIS STUDY documents dramatic improvements in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and explores their possible determinants. From a sample of the 160 carefully diagnosed borderline patients on whom prospective follow-along data was collected, a subsample of 18 was identified whose DSM-IV criteria count fell to two or fewer during the course of the first 6 months of the study and retained that improvement for the next 6 months. Follow-along data including month-by-month ratings of BPD criteria; week-by-week ratings of Axis I disorders, medication changes, and life events were then used to establish concensus ratings on four hypothesized causes: Axis …
