A Community Survey To Identify Rehabilitative Needs In The Home, Marion S. Ryerson Nov 1959

A Community Survey To Identify Rehabilitative Needs In The Home, Marion S. Ryerson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this pilot study was to find trends of needs of senior citizens which would be helpful to the community in planning for rehabilitative services. These needs were identified and described from data secured by personal interviews of 56 respondents, using a prearranged schedule. These respondents were 50 years of age and over who lived in and sought hospitalization in the Arrowhead United Fund Area. They were interviewed an average of 13 days following discharge from the three hospitals selected for the study.

The average respondent was found to be a man, 68 years of age, married and …

The Preaching Of H. Leo Boles, William S. Banowsky Aug 1959

The Preaching Of H. Leo Boles, William S. Banowsky

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

In the rich heritage of rhetoric, pulpit speaking has become one of the significant areas of public address. A wide gap would be left in the history of public address if pulpit orators were excluded from its heritage. In a sense, the history of this nation can be punctuated by a study religious speakers that have helped mold its development.

This study deals with the life and preaching of Henry Leo Boles, whose contribution to the dignity of the spoken word of the American pulpit has been significant. The pulpit ability of H. Leo Boles was no mere accident. He …

A Comparative Study Of The Salivary Glands Of Certain Animals With Widely Diverse Food Habits, Arthur E. Dalgleish Aug 1959

A Comparative Study Of The Salivary Glands Of Certain Animals With Widely Diverse Food Habits, Arthur E. Dalgleish

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A comparative study was made of the salivary glands of six animals with diverse diet and food habits. These consisted of the following species: coyote, bobcat, opossum, kangaroo rat, cow and goat. Correlations were sought between the food habits of the animals and the relative size and microscopic structure of their glands.

After recording the gross weights of the animal and the removed glands, microscopic sections were prepared by the paraffin method. Tissues were stained by routine and special stains, including stains specific for mucins.

The cytology of the different glands and the varied mucin reactions are described. Special attention …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Of Tongue Clicking To Mandibular Descent, Amy Louise Bricker Jul 1959

An Investigation Of The Relationship Of Tongue Clicking To Mandibular Descent, Amy Louise Bricker

Masters Theses

Introduction

The movement of the tongue has been of concern for many years to the speech therapist. At one time tongue exercises were of prime importance in this field but due to the gross misuse of the exercises, they have now become of little importance. Only recently has the motor functioning of the tongue attracted renewed interest. Although the activity of the tongue has often been studied, none of the studies to our knowledge have included the control of jaw movement. Since the genio-glossus muscle serves as the bulk of the tongue and has its origin on the mandible, the …

The Effect Of Recorded Lateral Lisping On Listener Comprehension, Leslie Gene Adkins Jul 1959

The Effect Of Recorded Lateral Lisping On Listener Comprehension, Leslie Gene Adkins

Masters Theses

The Problem

This experiment was designed to test the effect of misarticulation on listener comprehension. Of the many authorities who suggest that poor speaking reduces comprehension, Knower, Phillips, and Koeppel state: "Poor speaking seems to be the least effective method of presenting informative materials. There is a direct relationship between the quality of speaking performance and the amount of material recall." One of the important factors which contributes to effective speaking is correct articulation. According to Van Riper and Irwin: "If you misarticulate your speech sounds, it interferes with communication, and your speech is judged as abnormal." Articulation defects are …

The Correspondence Of Error Between The Voiced And Unvoiced Cognates “S” And “Z” In Children With Articulatory Disorders, Gerald F. Johnson Jul 1959

The Correspondence Of Error Between The Voiced And Unvoiced Cognates “S” And “Z” In Children With Articulatory Disorders, Gerald F. Johnson

Masters Theses

Introduction

The problem as set forth in this thesis is to determine the correspondence of error between the voiced and unvoiced cognates "s" and "z" in children with articulatory disorders. It has been assumed that the correspondence of error type would be high due to the similarity of the sounds. Anderson, for example, says that "much of what is true with respect to "s" applies with equal force to its voiced analogue "z"." The problem of this research is to determine whether there is any correspondence between the respective errors on the sibilants "s" and "z" and if they correspond …

Activities Of The Head Nurse In A Selected Medical Unit Of The Loma Linda Sanitarium And Hospital, Bessie Wat Jun 1959

Activities Of The Head Nurse In A Selected Medical Unit Of The Loma Linda Sanitarium And Hospital, Bessie Wat

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Assuming that the performance of duties not specifically on the head nurse level detract from her effectiveness as a head nurse, the problem of this study was to determine what proportion of time the head nurse spent in different activities, on what level of skill these activities were, where she performed them, with whom, and the duration of each activity.

This study was conducted on a selected medical unit of the Loma Linda Sanitarium and Hospital. The normative survey method as recommended by the Division of Nursing Resources was used. The morning and afternoon head nurses or their reliefs were …

An Evaluation Form For Professional Staff Nurses, Barbara Jean Brauer Jun 1959

An Evaluation Form For Professional Staff Nurses, Barbara Jean Brauer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The problem of this study was to develop an evaluation form to measure the differentiation in quality of nursing care given by professional staff nurses. It was hoped that the evaluation form could be used by administrators of nursing service as a basis for giving pay increases based on nursing performance.

A review of nursing literature did not reveal the existence of an evaluation form based on verifiable data of performance upon which an objective evaluation could be made.

The critical incident technique was used to gather the data for the study. The respondents were nursing supervisory personnel employed in …

Pharmacological Studies Of Antidiabetic Chinese Herbs, Mun Fa Lee Jun 1959

Pharmacological Studies Of Antidiabetic Chinese Herbs, Mun Fa Lee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Rehmannia glutinosa, Atractylus ovata, and Polygonatum chinense have all been employed by the Chinese as oral antidiabetic agents and reported by Min (1928), Kin (1931), and Li et al. (1936) to possess hypoglycemic activity. This prompted the pharmacological studies of these herbs.

Materials and methods. Their pharmacognosy was condensed from all available Chinese and scientific literature. Preliminary chemical and physical analyses included determinations for moisture, ash, crude fat, carbohydrates, protein, phosphorus, pH, alkaloids, melting point, and spectroscopy. Employing the Somogyi-Nelson method, their glycemic activity was studied in rats, rabbits, and dogs. Stress reactions were minimized. The effect …
