A Study Of The Alkaloids Of Narcissus Pseudonarcissus, Amaryllidaceae, Cisco Kihara

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The studies and preliminary screening results reported in this paper developed from an initial interest in what appeared to be mildly toxic qualities of the bulbs of the common daffodil, Narcissus pseudonarcissus, Amaryllidaceae. The literature consulted does not shed much light on the mechanisms of the toxic agent or agents, and there appear to be some inconsistencies in respect to the alkaloids extracted. Part of this may be the result of differences in method of extraction, or perhaps lack of agreement on the identity of the actual plant bulbs used as a source of alkaloids. In regard to the chemical …

Political candidates' persuasive speaking has traditionally attracted much public attention. The influence of campaign speech in determining the outcome of a political contest is difficult to measure, but, judging from the vast amount of time and money expended on the preparation and delivery of this type of speech, it is considered an important part of any political campaign. This study deals with the 1952 Campaign speaking of Adlai E. Stevenson, a man who gave a new dimension to campaign oratory.

The Ultrastructure Of The Choroid Plexus In Vitamin A Deficient Rabbits, Everet W. Witzel

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The fire structure of the lateral choroid plexus in vitamin A deficient hydrocephalic New Zealand white rabbits has been studied with the aid of both light and electron microscopy.

A special Vitamin A deficient diet was fed to all rabbits and control rabbits in addition received orally 12,500 I. U. of vitamin A powder per week. The offspring of does thus maintained for several months were studied.

All rabbits were decapitated; the left lateral choroid plexus was quickly exposed, and subjected to the fixative within 90 seconds following the death of the animal. Conventional techniques of fixation, embedding, and sectioning …

Platelet Immunology In Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura : A Review And Experimental Study, Albert Ross May 1960

Platelet Immunology In Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura : A Review And Experimental Study, Albert Ross

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

[From the Introduction] Within the past decade, progress in immuno-hematology has extended beyond the study of the erythrocyte. The demonstration of antibodies to red cells in some cases of acquired hemolytic anemia and in erythroblastosis fetalis defined the hypothetical existence of analogous phenomena for leucocytes and platelets. Advancements in immunologic technique have elevated the importance of immune bodies in the etiology of several cytopenic blood disorders. Extensive research has been done to elucidate the presence and nature of an anti-platelet factor int he serum of patients with thrombocytopenic purpura. Evidence of such a serum factor has been found in three …

[From the Summary] Ten rabbits were fitted with an apparatus for the continuous collection of oviduct fluid. A uniform rate of secretion was maintained for several days. Eight rabbits were then successfully mated. Five mated animals, found to be pregnant, showed a drop in the secretory rate to one-half the initial rate. Two mated animals, thought to be pseudopregnant, showed a drop in secretory rate to two-thirds and three-fifths of the initial rate. One mated animal, found to be neither pregnant nor pseudopregnant, showed no drop in secretory rate. We ma conclude, therefore, that there is a reduction of the …
