The Application Of Exercise Prescription Education In Medical Training, Thomas Sprys-Tellner, Diane L. Levine Md, Asim Kagzi
Medical Student Research Symposium
Objective: Physical inactivity is a significant contributor to many acute and chronic medical conditions. While the dangers of physical inactivity are well understood and physicians have a desire to address them, a lack of education in exercise prescription (ERx) may be a barrier to properly prescribing exercise to patients. The aim of this research was to explore the need for ERx education amongst students and physicians in training and determine the effectiveness of ERx didactic.
Methods: A one hour curriculum was developed based on the American College of Sports Medicine principles of ERx. Pre- and post-surveys were administered immediately …

Differentiating Axonal From Demyelinating Neuropathies Using Multiparametric Quantitative Mri Of Peripheral Nerves, Jacob D. Baraz, Stephanie Xuan, Sadaf Saba, Xue Yang, Ryan Castoro, Yang Xuan, Alison Roth, Richard D. Dortch, Jun Li, Yongsheng Chen
Medical Student Research Symposium
Objectives: To develop a multiparametric quantitative MRI (qMRI) method to track pathological changes in the peripheral neuropathies.
Background: Irrespective of the causes or types of polyneuropathies, peripheral nerves are mainly afflicted by two kinds of pathologies – axonal loss and demyelination. It is critical to differentiate between the two as treatments are different for the two conditions. While nerve conduction studies (NCS) have been used to differentiate the two pathologies in the distal nerves, there are no tools to probe the pathologies in the proximal peripheral nerves. This is particularly needed when distal nerves become non-responsive in NCS.
Methods: We …

Medical Student Research Symposium
Title: Medical Student Perceptions Comparing In-Person to Virtual Interviews in the Medical School Admissions Process
Background:
At Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSUSOM), prospective applicants are interviewed using three interview modalities: one faculty/alumni interview, one medical student interview, and five multiple-mini-interviews. Following COVID-19 induced institutional protocols, WSUSOM transitioned from in-person to a virtual format. In order to better understand how medical student interviewers viewed this transition, surveys were administered to those who experienced both in-person interviews (IPI) and virtual interviews (VI). The objective was to identify student perceptions of IPI and VI.
Methods:
This prospective, mixed …

Return To Play And Performance Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction In The National Women’S Soccer League, Varag Abed, Ajith Dupati, Gregory S. Hawk, Darren Johnson, Caitlin Conley, Austin V. Stone
Medical Student Research Symposium
Background: The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a commonly injured ligament in athletes, usually requiring ACL reconstruction (ACLR).
Hypothesis/Purpose: To compare the return to play (RTP) and performance level of players following ACLR in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). We hypothesized that there would be a high return to play rate following ACLR in the NWSL, but with a decrease in performance.
Methods: NWSL players that underwent ACLR were identified by cross-referencing multiple online resources that were identified between the 2013 and 2020 seasons. Players were classified into the following positions: forward, defender, midfielder, and goalkeeper. The following RTP …

Benzene Metabolite, Hydroquinone, Activates The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Pathway In Trophoblasts, Darby P. Richards, Anthony Maxwell, Laura Stephan, Jiahui Ding, Gil Mor
Medical Student Research Symposium
Introduction: Benzene is the 6th most produced chemical in the world and a major pollutant that has been shown to have adverse effects on pregnancy. We previously showed that maternal benzene exposure during pregnancy induces maternal immune activation and also leads to an increase in fetal reabsorptions. The molecular mechanism in which benzene induces these negative effects is poorly understood. Here we developed a cellular model of benzene exposure to understand the molecular effect of benzene on trophoblast cells. Specifically, cells were exposed hydroquinone, a major benzene metabolite, in order to determine the molecular mechanism behind the observed maternal immune …

Medical Student Research Symposium
Introduction: Smoking impairs healing potential and is a significant risk factor for complications following orthopaedic surgeries. The purpose of this study was to determine if a cohort of former or current smokers at time of surgery met the minimally clinical important difference (MCID) for Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Upper Extremity (PROMIS-UE), Depression (PROMIS-D), and Pain Interference (PROMIS-PI) scores in comparison to nonsmokers.
Methods: A retrospective review of patients who underwent rotator cuff repair was performed. Patients who completed preoperative and 6-month postoperative PROMIS scores were included. The MCID was calculated using a distribution technique with a threshold of 0.5 …

Group-Based Four-Dimensional Brain Mapping Of Executive Control, Matthew T. Brennan, Kazuki Sakakura Md, Masaki Sonoda Md, Phd, Aimee Luat Md, Neena Marupudi, Sandeep Sood Md, Eishi Asano Md, Phd
Medical Student Research Symposium
Rationale: Humans utilize executive control processes to carry out non-automatic tasks. These tasks require coordination from higher brain centers to both suppress inappropriate behaviors and initiate correct responses. The goal of this study is to generate a novel, dynamic brain atlas to visualize and understand the network dynamics underlying executive control.
Methods: We studied 547 non-epileptic intracranial electrode sites sampled from seven patients with focal epilepsy. Each patient performed two types of verbal tasks: word-reading and Stroop color-naming. Mixed model analysis compared high-gamma cortical activation prior to response onset between the word-reading and Stroop color-naming tasks. Based on mixed model …
