Edward R Norris MD, FAPA, FAPM

The study was a single-site, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel group study to evaluate the efficacy of adjunctive ramelteon in the treatment of insomnia and mood stability in patients with euthymic bipolar disorder for up to 24 weeks of maintenance treatment. Participants with euthymic bipolar disorder and sleep disturbances were randomized to receive adjunctive ramelteon or placebo in addition to their reular psychiatric medications for up to 24 weeks or until they experienced a relapse (defined as a depressed or manic event).

Complementary And Alternative Medicine: Attitudes And Use Among Health Educators In The United States, Ping Johnson, Jennifer Priestley, Kandice Porter, Jane Petrillo

Jennifer L. Priestley

Background: Interest in and use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in the United States is increasing. However, CAM remains an area of nascency for researchers and western practitioners. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine U.S. health educators' attitudes toward CAM and their use of common CAM therapies. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among members of a professional health educator listserv. Results: Health educators generally have positive attitudes toward CAM and about 90% have used at least one CAM therapy in the last 12 months. Differences in CAM attitudes and use were significant, with females …

Test-Retest Reliability Of The Soleus H-Reflex Is Affected By Joint Positions And Force Levels, Yungsheng Chen, Shi Zhou, Colleen Cartwright, Zachary Crowley, Robert Baglin, Fang Wang Oct 2013

Test-Retest Reliability Of The Soleus H-Reflex Is Affected By Joint Positions And Force Levels, Yungsheng Chen, Shi Zhou, Colleen Cartwright, Zachary Crowley, Robert Baglin, Fang Wang

Professor Colleen M Cartwright

The H-reflex has been extensively used to exam the spinal motoneuron excitability. However, no report has demonstrated the test-retest reliability of the H-reflex assessment during voluntary muscle contractions and its relation to joint positions. The purpose of this study was to determine the test-retest reliability of the soleus (SOL) H-reflex during rest and 10, 30, 50% maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) at the ankle joint angles of neutral (0deg), plantarflexion (20deg), and dorsiflexion (-20deg), respectively in a sitting position. Ten healthy participants (age 24.9 ± 5 years, height 168.3±8.8 cm, weight 62.7±12.3 kg) were tested for the SOL H-reflex on two …

Burden Of Stigma On Mentally Ill And Social Exclusion, Amresh Srivastava Oct 2013

Burden Of Stigma On Mentally Ill And Social Exclusion, Amresh Srivastava

Amresh Srivastava

Stigma of mental illness causes great burden on the patients and their families. It leads to discrimination, social exclusion and personal isolation. It occurs across all social, economic, and cultural class and geographical regions. As one of the greatest barrier to treatment and outcome, it is a potential clinical risk which leads to suicide, violence, physical impairment, physical illnesses, unemployment, and economic deprivation. People having mental illness suffer prejudice due to stigma. Anti-stigma measure is focussed on public health. Answer to stigma lies in personalised interventions. We carried out systematic studies to understand patient and family’s perception, and proposed clinical …

Amyloid-β (Aβ) plays a central role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and has been postulated as a potential biomarker for AD. However, there is a lack of consensus as to its suitability as an AD biomarker. The objective of this study was to determine the significance of plasma Aβ as an AD biomarker and its relationship with Aβ load and to determine the effect of different assay methods on the interpretation of Aβ levels. Plasma Aβ1-40, Aβ1-42, and N-terminal cleaved fragments were measured using both a commercial multiplex assay and a well-documented ELISA in 1032 individuals drawn from …

Comparison Of Longitudinal Sciatic Nerve Movement With Different Mobilization Exercises: An In Vivo Study Utilizing Ultrasound Imaging, Richard Ellis, Wayne Hing, Peter Mcnair Sep 2013

Comparison Of Longitudinal Sciatic Nerve Movement With Different Mobilization Exercises: An In Vivo Study Utilizing Ultrasound Imaging, Richard Ellis, Wayne Hing, Peter Mcnair

Wayne Hing

Study design: Controlled laboratory study using a single-group, within-subjects comparison. Objectives: To determine whether different types of neural mobilization exercises are associated with differing amounts of longitudinal sciatic nerve excursion measured in vivo at the posterior midthigh region. Background: Recent research focusing on the upper limb of healthy subjects has shown that nerve excursion differs significantly between different types of neural mobilization exercises. This has not been examined in the lower limb. It is important to initially examine the influence of neural mobilization on peripheral nerve excursion in healthy people to identify peripheral nerve excursion impairments under conditions in which …

Comparison Of A Novel Direct Measure Of Rapid Pain Intensity Change To Traditional Serial 100 Mm Vas Measurement Of Pain Intensity, Mark Laslett, Peter Mcnair, Angela Cadogan, Wayne Hing Sep 2013

Comparison Of A Novel Direct Measure Of Rapid Pain Intensity Change To Traditional Serial 100 Mm Vas Measurement Of Pain Intensity, Mark Laslett, Peter Mcnair, Angela Cadogan, Wayne Hing

Wayne Hing

Objectives: Key diagnostic decisions often turn on measurement of change in pain intensity after diagnostic anesthetic blocks. This study aimed to introduce a new direct measure pain intensity change and compare it with percent change as calculated from the traditional preprocedure and postprocedure pain visual analog scales. Methods: Shoulder pain patients enrolled in a diagnostic accuracy study comparing clinical variables with image-guided local anesthetic injections were assessed with both the traditional preprocedure and postprocedure visual analog scales and the new direct method. Percent change in pain intensity was calculated with both instruments and were compared using statistical methods. The percentage …

Cracks In Problem Based Learning: What Is Your Action Plan?, Samy Azer, Michelle Mclean, Hirotaka Onishi, Masami Tagawa, Albert Scherpbier

Michelle McLean

Background: Problem-based learning (PBL) as an educational approach has been adopted by medical and health sciences faculties worldwide. Successful implementation of these curricula may, however, end a few years later with several problems reflecting cracks in curriculum maintenance. Aims: The aim of this article is to discuss these problems, their possible causes and what action can be taken to maintain effective curriculum delivery. Methods: We reviewed the current literature, recent Association for Medical Education in Europe conferences' sessions on PBL, explored curriculum design approaches and problems (cracks) identified in PBL programs that may occur a few years after successful implementation. …
