Novel Splenic Antigen Presenting Cell Derive From A Lin-Ckitlo Progenitor, Pravin Periasamy, Jonanthan Tan, Helen O'Neill

Helen O'Neill

The main DC subsets in murine spleen arise from BMderived precursors. Recently, a novel APC type was described in spleen. To determine if spleen contains the progenitors of this subset, a stromal coculture system was used to assess candidate progenitors for their hematopoietic potential. Here, the progenitor of that subset is identified as a spleen endogenous Lin-c-kitlo hematopoietic progenitor and is most highly enriched among the Lin-c-kitloCD34+ subset. Dendritic-like cells produced in vitro functionally resemble the previously described in vivo equivalent subset with high endocytic capacity and capability for antigen-specific activation of CD8+ T cells but not CD4+ T cells.

Hyaluronic Acid Based Self-Assembling Nanosystems For Cd44 Target Mediated Sirna Delivery To Solid Tumors., Arun Iyer

Arun Iyer

Anticancer therapeutics employing RNA interference mechanism holds promising potentials for sequence-specific silencing of target genes. However targeted delivery of siRNAs to tumor tissues and cells and more importantly, their intracellular release at sites of interest still remains a major challenge that needs to be addressed before this technique could become a clinically viable option. In the current study, we have engineered and screened a series of CD44 targeting hyaluronic acid (HA) based self-assembling nanosystems for targeted siRNA delivery. The HA polymer was functionalized with lipids of varying carbon chain lengths/nitrogen content, as well as polyamines for assessing siRNA encapsulation. From …

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a medical imaging technique that can be used to show brain function. Courts have admitted PET scan evidence in cases involving brain damage, injury, toxic exposure, or illness ("brain trauma") and to support claims of diminished cognitive abilities and impulse control. Despite the limited data on the relationships between PET, brain trauma and behavior, many courts admit PET scan evidence without much critical analysis. This article examines the use of PET as proof of functional impairment and justification of abnormal behavior by explaining its diagnostic use and limitations, the limited support for claims of its …

The Effects Of A Home-Based Virtual Reality Rehabilitation Program On Balance Among Individuals With Parkinson's Disease, Jeffrey Holmes, Michelle Gu, Andrew Johnson, Mary Jenkins

Andrew M. Johnson

Background and Purpose: Recently, the Nintendo Wii has emerged as an innovation in rehabilitation. Although research findings to date have contributed to our understanding of the effects of implementing the Wii as a rehabilitation tool, evidence supporting the Wii for improving symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) remains limited. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to evaluate the effectiveness of a 12-week home-based exercise program designed around the Wii, in improving balance, balance confidence, and maintaining exercise adherence among individuals with PD. Methods: Fifteen participants were recruited to engage in 30 minutes of Wii activity 3×/week for 12 weeks. Results: …

What You See Is What You Fear: Visual Imagery Of Vaccine - Preventable Diseases As A Tool To Counteract Vaccine Rejection, Robert Field Dec 2012

What You See Is What You Fear: Visual Imagery Of Vaccine - Preventable Diseases As A Tool To Counteract Vaccine Rejection, Robert Field

Robert I. Field

While vaccine acceptance remains high in general, fear of vaccines has grown dramatically in the past several years in many developed countries. In some communities, this fear has led to significantly increased rates of vaccine refusal which are associated with increases in illness and death from vaccine-preventable diseases, and large economic costs for health care and society. Despite overwhelming evidence supporting the safety and benefits of vaccination, this fear has proven resistant to information campaigns, a phenomenon well-explained by psychological research which has established that risk perception is subjective, a product of both the facts and how those facts feel. …

Factors Associated With Antibiotic Prescribing In Children With Otitis Media, Christina Ryborg, Jens Søndergaard, Jørgen Lous, Anders Munck, Pia Larsen, Malene Hansen, Janus Thomsen

Malene Hansen

Acute otitis media (AOM) is often treated with antibiotics. However, initial observation is recommended. Denmark has a low use of antibiotics compared with other countries, but the total use of antibiotics has increased by 32% during the last decade, and it is important to know whether general practitioners (GPs) prescribe antibiotics according to guidelines. Objective. The aim of the study was to analyse associations between GPs’ antibiotic prescribing for AOM and symptoms, diagnoses, and characteristics of children. Methods. A cohort study where GPs consecutively included 954 children between 0 and 7 years old with a new ear symptom was carried …

The Bad Habit Of Bearing Children, H Theixos, S.B. Jamil Dec 2012

The Bad Habit Of Bearing Children, H Theixos, S.B. Jamil

H Theixos

Procreation – the act of having and raising biological children – is generally not a life choice that is subject to moral scrutiny; there is a standing assumption that parents act morally when they bring or intend to bring new life into existence with the intent of fostering and nurturing the future child(ren). We argue that this assumption is not morally justifiable under present societal conditions, and basic tenets of moral decency obligate prospective parents, under certain defeasibility conditions, to prioritize adoption over procreation. We conclude that for the subset of prospective parents who are unaffected by the defeasibility conditions, …

Changes In Body Mass In Later Life And Incident Dementia, Brian Power, Helman Alfonso, Leon Flicker, Graeme Hankey, Bu Yeap, Osvaldo Almeida Dec 2012

Changes In Body Mass In Later Life And Incident Dementia, Brian Power, Helman Alfonso, Leon Flicker, Graeme Hankey, Bu Yeap, Osvaldo Almeida

Brian Power

Background: There is ongoing debate about whether a decline in body mass represents a true risk factor for
dementia, whether it is a phenotypic marker of incipient dementia, or perhaps a marker of another process
that increases dementia risk. This study was designed to determine if changes in body mass index (BMI) in
later life are associated with hazard of incident dementia over a follow-up period of up to eight years.
Methods: Method followed was a prospective cohort study of 4,181 men aged 65–84 years, resident in Perth,
Australia. The exposure of interest was change in BMI measured between 1996–1998 …

Does Accumulating Exposure To Illicit Drugs Bring Forward The Age At Onset In Schizophrenia?, Brian Power, Milan Dragovic, Assen Jablensky, Nikos Stefanis

Brian Power

Objective: Whilst cannabis has been associated with an earlier age at onset in schizophrenia, the impact of amphetamine
and/or cocaine plus cannabis consumption on age at onset remains unclear. The present study was designed to test the
hypothesis that consumption of amphetamine and/or cocaine in addition to cannabis would lead to an earlier age at onset
of schizophrenia than that seen for cannabis consumption alone. A secondary objective was to determine what kind of
effect additional substance use exerted (e.g. additive, multiplicative).
Method: Patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia were recruited from consecutive admissions to the inpatient and outpatient
services …

Compound Risk Of High Mortality Following Osteoporotic Fracture And Refracture In Elderly Women And Men, Dana Bliuc, Nguyen Nguyen, Tuan Nguyen, John Eisman, Jacqueline Center Dec 2012

Compound Risk Of High Mortality Following Osteoporotic Fracture And Refracture In Elderly Women And Men, Dana Bliuc, Nguyen Nguyen, Tuan Nguyen, John Eisman, Jacqueline Center

John Eisman

After fracture there is increased risk of refracture and premature mortality. These outcomes, particularly premature mortality following
refracture, have not previously been studied together to understand overall mortality risk. This study examined the long‐term cumulative
incidence of subsequent fracture and total mortality with mortality calculated as a compound risk and separated according to initial and
refracture. Community‐dwelling participants aged 60þ years from Dubbo Osteoporosis Epidemiology Study with incident fractures,
followed prospectively for further fractures and deaths from 1989 to 2010. Subsequent fracture and mortality ascertained using
cumulative incidence competing risk models allowing four possible outcomes: death without refracture; death following …

Neuropeptide Y Is A Critical Modulator Of Leptin's Regulation Of Cortical Bone, Iris Wong, Amy Nguyen, Ee Cheng Khor, Ronaldo Enriquez, John Eisman, Amanda Sainsbury, Herbert Herzog, Paul Baldock Dec 2012

Neuropeptide Y Is A Critical Modulator Of Leptin's Regulation Of Cortical Bone, Iris Wong, Amy Nguyen, Ee Cheng Khor, Ronaldo Enriquez, John Eisman, Amanda Sainsbury, Herbert Herzog, Paul Baldock

John Eisman

Leptin signaling is required for normal bone homeostasis; however, loss of leptin results in differing effects on cortical and cancellous
bone, as well as altered responses between the axial and appendicular regions. Local b-adrenergic actions are responsible for the greater

cancellous bone volume in leptin-deficient (ob/ob) mice; however, the mechanism responsible for the opposing reduction in cortical

bone in ob/ob mice is not known. Here we show that blocking the leptin-deficient increase in neuropeptide Y (NPY) expression reverses

the cortical bone loss in ob/ob mice. Mice null for both NPY and leptin (NPY–/–ob/ob), display greater …

Neuropeptide Y Mediates The Short-Term Hypometabolic Effect Of Estrogen Deficiency In Mice, John Eisman, Ayse Zengin, Amy Nguyen, Iris Wong, Lei Zhang, Ronaldo Enriquez, Herbert Herzog, Paul Baldock, Amanda Sainsbury

John Eisman

BACKGROUND: Estrogen deficiency increases body weight or total and central adiposity and decreases energy expenditure.
Hypothalamic neuropeptide Y (NPY) expression is altered by estrogen deficiency in rodents, but the long-term consequences
on energy homeostasis are unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of NPY in the changes in energy expenditure and physical activity, as well as the associated
changes in body weight and composition in response to short-term and long-term estrogen deficiency.
DESIGN: Sham and ovariectomy (OVX) operations were performed at 8 weeks of age in wild-type (WT) and NPY/ mice. Energy
expenditure, physical activity, body composition and weight, as well …

Quantitative Ultrasound And Fracture Risk Prediction, Mei Chang, Nguyen Nguyen, Jacqueline Center, John Eisman Ao, Tuan Nguyen Dec 2012

Quantitative Ultrasound And Fracture Risk Prediction, Mei Chang, Nguyen Nguyen, Jacqueline Center, John Eisman Ao, Tuan Nguyen

John Eisman

Summary: This study sought to determine the association
between calcaneal quantitative ultrasound (QUS) and fracturerisk in individuals without osteoporosis according to theWorld Health Organization criteria (i.e., BMD T-score>
2.5). We found that calcaneal QUS is an independent
predictor of fracture risk in women with non-osteoporoticbone mineral density (BMD).
Introduction More than 50 % of women and 70 % of men
who sustain a fragility fracture have BMD above the osteoporotic
threshold (T-score>2.5). Calcaneal QUS is associated
with fracture risk. This study aimed to test the hypothesisthat low calcaneal QUS is associated with increased fracturerisk in individuals with …

Bacterial Aetiological Agents Of Intra-Amniotic Infections And Preterm Birth In Pregnant Women, George L. Mendz, Nadeem Kaakoush, Julie Quinlivan Dec 2012

Bacterial Aetiological Agents Of Intra-Amniotic Infections And Preterm Birth In Pregnant Women, George L. Mendz, Nadeem Kaakoush, Julie Quinlivan

George Mendz

Infection-related preterm birth is a leading cause of infant mortality and morbidity; knowledge of bacterial populations invading the amniotic cavity and the routes of invasion is required to make progress in the prevention of preterm birth. Significant advances have been made in understanding bacterial communities in the vagina, but much less studied are intra-uterine bacterial populations during pregnancy. A systematic review of data published on the intra-uterine microbiome was performed; molecular information and summaries of species found in healthy individuals and in women with diagnosed infections served to construct a database and to analyse results to date. Thirteen studies fulfilled …
