Anomalia Anorretal: Relato De Caso Clínico / Anorectal Malformations: A Case Report, Everton Fernando Alves, Jucélia Lins Dos Santos Oliveira, Maria Do Rosário Martins

Everton Fernando Alves

Long-Term Mechanical Ventilation In A Critical Care Unit: Existing In An Everyday World, Patricia Johnson, Winsome St John, Wendy Moyle Feb 2006

Long-Term Mechanical Ventilation In A Critical Care Unit: Existing In An Everyday World, Patricia Johnson, Winsome St John, Wendy Moyle

Patricia Johnson

Aim: This paper reports a study to describe and interpret the meaning of being on long-term mechanical ventilation.

Background: Patients who require mechanical ventilation in a critical care unit for prolonged periods of time are typically sicker than those who are ventilated for shorter periods. Despite advances in treatment modalities for critically ill patients, many still require long-term mechanical ventilation for 7 days or more. Therefore, caring for a long-term ventilated patient is often an everyday occurrence for critical care nurses; however, there is insufficient evidence of the meaning of this experience from a patient perspective.

Method: We used an …

A Case Of Health Disparity, Donna Zucker Dec 2005

A Case Of Health Disparity, Donna Zucker

Donna M. Zucker

Although the incidence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in women is only slightly less than in men, women are poorly represented in research trials. As a result, not much is known about them as a subgroup. The specific aims of this article were to report on the problem, study methods, and findings focusing on HCV-positive women's health beliefs, how they identify and understand their health and illness states, and their explanatory models of illness behavior. A pilot study using three focus groups was conducted with women in the community, in recovery, and incarcerated. Two groups emerged: those with and those …

No Mutations Detected In The Insr Gene In A Chromosome 19p13 Linked Migraine Pedigree, Robert Curtain, Lotti Tajouri, Rod Lea, John Macmillan, Lyn Griffiths Dec 2005

No Mutations Detected In The Insr Gene In A Chromosome 19p13 Linked Migraine Pedigree, Robert Curtain, Lotti Tajouri, Rod Lea, John Macmillan, Lyn Griffiths

Lotti Tajouri

The aim of this study was to investigate through direct sequencing the insulin receptor (INSR) gene in DNA samples from a migraine affected family previously showing linkage to chromosome 19p13 in an attempt to detect disease associated mutations. Migraine is a common debilitating disorder with a significant genetic component. At present, the number and type of genes involved in the common forms of migraine are not clear. The INSR gene on chromosome 19p13.3-13.2 is a gene of interest since a number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located within the gene have been implicated in migraine with (MA) and without aura …

Depressed Contractile Responses To Neurokinin A In Idiopathic But Not Neurogenic Overactive Human Detrusor Muscle, Donna Sellers, Christopher Chapple, Douglas Hay, Russell Chess-Williams

Donna Sellers

Objective: The role of tachykinins such as neurokinin A in regulating bladder function is unclear, but NK2 receptors seem to mediate contraction in the human bladder and it has been suggested that these peptides may have a role in the pathophysiology of bladder dysfunction. The present study investigates neurokinin receptor-mediated contractility of detrusor muscle in the idiopathic overactive and neurogenic overactive bladder and investigates the neurokinin receptor subtypes involved.

Methods: Human bladder was obtained from patients undergoing cystectomy (normal) or clam cystoplasty (idiopathic overactive) and from patients with spinal injuries (neurogenic overactive). Strips of isolated detrusor muscle were mounted in …

We have developed a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique for imaging Feridex (superparamagnetic iron oxide [SPIO])-labeled islets of Langerhans using a standard clinical 1.5-Tesla (T) scanner and employing steady-state acquisition imaging sequence (3DFIESTA). Both porcine and rat islets were labeled with SPIO by a transfection technique using a combination of poly-l-lysine and electroporation. Electron microscopy demonstrated presence of SPIO particles within the individual islet cells, including beta-cells and particles trapped between cell membranes. Our labeling method produced a transfection rate of 860 pg to 3.4 ng iron per islet, dependent on the size of the islet. The labeling procedure did …
