Activity Behavior And Physiological Profile Of Advanced-Stage Ovarian Cancer Survivors, Christelle Schofield
Activity Behavior And Physiological Profile Of Advanced-Stage Ovarian Cancer Survivors, Christelle Schofield
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Background: Advanced-stage ovarian cancer survivors (OCS) often experience a multitude of disease symptoms and treatment-related side-effects. Additionally, most OCS are older, have comorbidities, are overweight or obese, and report being insufficiently physically active. Ovarian cancer survivors may benefit from exercise oncology interventions to reduce symptom-burden, manage comorbidities, minimize functional decline and maximize health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, current knowledge gaps regarding the physiological characteristics of OCS throughout the entire survivorship spectrum challenge the development of tailored exercise interventions.
Purpose: The overall purpose of this thesis was to provide a more comprehensive physiological and activity behavior profile of post-treatment advanced-stage …
The Effects Of Augmented Feedback On Pacing And Performance Of Elite Combat Athletes, Israel Halperin
The Effects Of Augmented Feedback On Pacing And Performance Of Elite Combat Athletes, Israel Halperin
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Augmented feedback has been shown to improve performance and influence pacing in various physical activities. However, few studies have investigated its effects on performance and pacing in striking combat sports. Additionally, despite the plethora of studies examining the influence of feedback in untrained individuals, there is a lack of research examining the effects of such feedback in trained participants. Considering the important role of feedback in training and competition, the purpose of this thesis is to examine the effects of three different but inter-dependent methods of augmented feedback on performance of combat, and resistance trained athletes.
Study 1 examined the …
Dry Land Strength And Power Training To Enhance Swimming In-Water Turn Performance, Julian Jones
Dry Land Strength And Power Training To Enhance Swimming In-Water Turn Performance, Julian Jones
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Undertaking dry-land strength and power training to increase leg extensor power output is believed to increase a swimmer’s ability to start and turn during a swim race. Swimmers generally undertake dry-land strength and power training as part of their overall training regime to increase lower body force output and impulse, in order to improve both swim start and turning performance. Elite swimmers demonstrate faster swimming turn times that are potentially a result of having better strength-power characteristics than sub-elite swimmers. The aim of this research was to quantify differences in dry-land and swimming turn leg extensor force-time characteristics between elite …
Comparison In Muscle Activity Between The Back Squat, Romanian Deadlift And Barbell Hip Thrust During Hip Extension, Jose Delgado
Comparison In Muscle Activity Between The Back Squat, Romanian Deadlift And Barbell Hip Thrust During Hip Extension, Jose Delgado
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Common resistance-training exercises such as back squat, Romanian deadlift (RDL), and hip thrust have been used by strength and conditioning specialists to target the musculature used during hip extension. Little is known about the differences in muscular activity of the hip extensors between these exercises, so it is not known which is the most effective as a hip extensor exercise. The primary purpose of this study was to compare muscle activity of several muscles during the high-bar back squat, RDL and barbell hip thrust, using men with a minimum of 1 year of lower-body resistance-training experience. Surface electromyography (EMG) was …
The Performance Analysis Of Power Output In Professional Male Road Cyclists, Alan J. Metcalfe
The Performance Analysis Of Power Output In Professional Male Road Cyclists, Alan J. Metcalfe
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Athletes regularly monitor exercise workload in an attempt to improve and maintain exercise performance. Within road cycling, workload is commonly measured using power output. Yet, it is plausible that power output during road cycling is influenced by several factors such as topography, road gradient or rider specialities. If these factors do influence power output they may influence quantification of workload demands. As such, the purpose of this thesis was to improve our understanding of external workload in professional road cycling and describe the factors which influence power output during performance analysis. Specifically, this thesis examined the power output within single …
Effects Of Lumbopelvic Stabilization Program In Young, Non-Elite, Community-Based Gymnasts, Miranda Katherine Pomije
Effects Of Lumbopelvic Stabilization Program In Young, Non-Elite, Community-Based Gymnasts, Miranda Katherine Pomije
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Context: Gymnasts are seen practicing and competing even though they are reporting high levels of low back pain that can hinder their career if not resolved. Therefore, it may be beneficial for gymnasts to train key muscles in the lumbopelvic region to decrease those symptoms and prevent future injury. This study assesses the effects of lumbopelvic stabilization training in young, non-elite, community-based gymnasts. Objective: Measure the effectiveness of core stability training on lumbar muscle endurance, lumbo-pelvic stabilization, abdominal strength and balance in adolescent female gymnasts and examine the effect of these interventions on the occurrence of low back pain. Design: …
Examining The Relationship Between Different Pitching Mechanics And Throwing Injuries, Zachary M. Mccarthy
Examining The Relationship Between Different Pitching Mechanics And Throwing Injuries, Zachary M. Mccarthy
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Throwing injuries in baseball are increasing amongst major league baseball pitchers. Injuries to the shoulder complex and elbow ligamentous structures are increasing. Variables including pitch count, pitch type, throwing style, and duration of the game have all been “linked” to potential injury. Noticing the realtionship between these variables and injuries can lead to an upward trend in the decrease of throwing injuries.
The Effect Of Stretching The Gastrocnemius On Electromechanical Delay And Decreased Muscle Power Production, Kolyse E. Wagstaff
The Effect Of Stretching The Gastrocnemius On Electromechanical Delay And Decreased Muscle Power Production, Kolyse E. Wagstaff
Honors College Theses
Previous studies in the field of biomechanics have determined that statically stretching muscles before explosive athletic events decreases muscle power production during performance. However, current research does not explain why muscle power production is lessened due to static stretching. Electromechanical delay (EMD) is the delay between muscle stimulation and force, and the purpose of this research is to determine if the decrease in muscle force production is due to a lengthened EMD of the muscle, potentially caused by static stretching. To test this, participants jumped on force plates and jump power produced by the gastrocnemius was calculated, with stretching and …
The Reliability Of The Navicular Drop Test And Its Transferability To Dynamic Movement, Joshua Krispin
The Reliability Of The Navicular Drop Test And Its Transferability To Dynamic Movement, Joshua Krispin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Navicular drop can be defined as the distance the navicular tuberosity moves from a standing weight bearing to a standing neutral position, as the subtalar joint moves from a relaxed position to a neutral position. Navicular drop is an important measurement for clinicians used to describe foot function, pronation, and excessive movement seen in several pathologies. Objective: The purpose of this study is to see if navicular drop is influenced by mode or speed of locomotion, if it is will there be other influences such as the forefoot and heel soft tissue, and will those factors influence those measures. …
The Effect Of Repetitive Head Impacts On Postural Control Over The Course Of A Single Season, Katelyn E. Grimes
The Effect Of Repetitive Head Impacts On Postural Control Over The Course Of A Single Season, Katelyn E. Grimes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
INTRODUCTION: Recently neurocognitive dysfunction has been linked to poor postural control in concussed athletes. While the detrimental effect of repetitive head impacts on cognitive function have been shown to mirror the effects of concussive injury, very little research has investigated the physical consequences of repetitive head impacts. PURPOSE: To observe the effects of RHI on postural control, both static and dynamic, in NCAA Division I athletes over the course of a single season. METHODS: 9 NCAA Division I football athletes (CON) were recruited from a single university as the experimental group, as well as 9 NCAA Division I baseball players …
