Comparisons Of Perceived Training Doses In Champion Collegiate-Level Male And Female Cross-Country Runners And Coaches Over The Course Of A Competitive Season, Kyle Barnes Oct 2017

Comparisons Of Perceived Training Doses In Champion Collegiate-Level Male And Female Cross-Country Runners And Coaches Over The Course Of A Competitive Season, Kyle Barnes

Funded Articles

Background: Session rating of perceived exertion (sRPE) is a practical tool for coaches to assess internal training load of their athletes. In a sport like cross-country running, that is individual in nature, but has a team training and competition component, information about the association between external and internal load is lacking. Furthermore, there is a need for studies that examine perception of training doses across multiple training cycles including the competitive season as well as between male and female athletes.

Methods: Session RPE, duration, and training load (TLRPE = sRPE × duration) of 25 highly trained male …

The Acute And Chronic Effects Of Highly Cushioned Shoes On Loading Characteristics In Recreational Runners, Jessica Corkin Aug 2017

The Acute And Chronic Effects Of Highly Cushioned Shoes On Loading Characteristics In Recreational Runners, Jessica Corkin

All NMU Master's Theses

Recently, highly cushioned shoes (HCS) entered the running market, and manufacturers suggested extra cushioning potentially reduced injury rates through superior shock absorption, implying less impact upon foot strike versus other shoes. Hence, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a 4-week HCS intervention on running-related impact forces in adult recreational runners. We hypothesized HCS would result in altered force attenuation compared to standard cushioned shoes (SCS) at baseline. After 4-weeks, we speculated differences would not be attenuated. Twenty-nine healthy runners (18-60 yrs of age) who had never worn HCS were randomized to either an intervention (INV) …

A Survey-Based Study Of The Changes To Self-Efficacy, Trust In Coaching, Goal Orientation, And State Anxiety That Occur During A Marathon Training Taper, Erica A. Witoslawski May 2017

A Survey-Based Study Of The Changes To Self-Efficacy, Trust In Coaching, Goal Orientation, And State Anxiety That Occur During A Marathon Training Taper, Erica A. Witoslawski

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Throughout a sport season, athletes’ physiological systems are constantly broken down and strengthened due to repeated practices and competitions. However, not just the physiological benefits of tapering impact performance. The purpose of this study was to extend the current literature that has found connections between self-efficacy, trust in coaching, state anxiety, goal orientation, and sport performance by assessing these variables during a marathon training taper period. The study analyzed included 29 subjects who were enrolled in a general-education health and fitness course focusing on marathon training through a series of surveys electronically administered 3 times (baseline, pre-taper, and post-taper) throughout …

Running Injuries Due To Strike Patterns, Jamie M. Rogers Jan 2017

Running Injuries Due To Strike Patterns, Jamie M. Rogers

The Kabod

Running is a very repetitive activity that can lead to surmountable stresses to the body over time that could lead to injury. Running biomechanics can influence the effects that the body will experience. This paper will discuss the biomechanical effects that relate to two different strike patterns: rearfoot and forefoot. Research will be examined as to how the strike patterns can influence the major lower extremity joints: ankle, knee, and hip. Common injuries during running as related to strike pattern are also discussed through conclusions based on research studies.

Pilot Study Of Endurance Runners And Brain Responses Associated With Delay Discounting, Laura E. Martin, Jason-Flor V. Sisante, David R. Wilson, Angela A. Moody, Cary R. Savage, Sandra A. Billinger Jan 2017

Pilot Study Of Endurance Runners And Brain Responses Associated With Delay Discounting, Laura E. Martin, Jason-Flor V. Sisante, David R. Wilson, Angela A. Moody, Cary R. Savage, Sandra A. Billinger

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty and Staff Publications

High levels of endurance training have been associated with potentially negative health outcomes and addictive-like symptoms such as exercise in the presence of injury and higher levels of impulsivity. This pilot study examined the relationships among self-report measures of addictive symptoms related to exercise and behavioral and neural measures of impulsivity in endurance runners. We hypothesized endurance runners would have increased preference for immediate rewards and greater activation of cognitive control regions when making decisions involving delayed rewards. Twenty endurance runners (at least 20 miles/week) were recruited to undergo measures of self-report exercise addiction symptoms, impulsive decision-making (delay discounting) and …

The Effects Of Incline And Resistance On Metabolic Cost And Muscle Activation In Elliptical Exercise, Megan K. Alfi Jan 2017

The Effects Of Incline And Resistance On Metabolic Cost And Muscle Activation In Elliptical Exercise, Megan K. Alfi

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Elliptical trainers are machines that were designed to mimic the motion of running while reducing the ground reaction forces and joint loading on the lower body. As a result, endurance runners commonly use it as a cross-training modality. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of ramp incline and resistance in elliptical exercise on metabolic cost and lower limb muscle activation patterns. A secondary purpose was to compare the metabolic cost and muscle activation patterns of elliptical exercise to running. Methods: Gross metabolic cost and muscle activation for eight muscles of the leg were measured during elliptical …
