Determining Success Or Failure After Foot And Ankle Surgery Using Patient Acceptable Symptom State (Pass) And Patient Reported Outcome Information System (Promis), Michael R. Anderson, Judith F. Baumhauer, Benedict F. Digiovanni, Sam Flemister, John P. Ketz, Irvin Oh, Jeff Houck

Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

Background: As the role of generic patient-reported outcomes (PROs) expands, important questions remain about their interpretation. In particular, how the Patient Reported Outcome Measurement Instrumentation System (PROMIS) t score values correlate with the patients’ perception of success or failure (S/F) of their surgery is unknown. The purposes of this study were to characterize the association of PROMIS t scores, the patients’ perception of their symptoms (patient acceptable symptom state [PASS]), and determination of S/F after surgery.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study contacted patients after the 4 most common foot and ankle surgeries at a tertiary academic medical center (n = …

Cross-Cultural E-Learning Between Cypriot And American Occupational Therapy Students: A Pilot Study, Kayla Collins, Pavlina Psychoili, Mary Zadnik May 2018

Cross-Cultural E-Learning Between Cypriot And American Occupational Therapy Students: A Pilot Study, Kayla Collins, Pavlina Psychoili, Mary Zadnik

Occupational Therapy Collection

Rationale: Culturally competent practice is necessary for occupational therapists (OT) working with clients from different backgrounds, values, and beliefs. Developing sustainable methods for providing students with cross-cultural experiences reinforces a global understanding of the profession and broadens students’ views of clinical practice.

Objectives: Investigate potential benefits of cross-cultural collaborations for student learning. Identify facilitators and barriers of cross-cultural educational collaborations for development of curriculums that give students opportunities to evaluate cultural variations in occupation.

Approach: This pilot study will be implemented in phases, the first of which has been completed. OT students from the European University of Cyprus and the …

Body Based Meditative And Mindfulness Practices For Veterans With Combat Related Ptsd, Jessica Steurer May 2018

Body Based Meditative And Mindfulness Practices For Veterans With Combat Related Ptsd, Jessica Steurer

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This literature review investigates and examines how body based meditative and mindfulness practices can be an effective treatment method for Veterans with symptoms of combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder. Yoga Therapy and other Expressive Therapy modalities (Art, Music) have developed evidenced-based practices and supporting research for this treatment area. Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) has shown effectiveness when treating conditions Veterans often present with such as combat-related PTSD, Substance Abuse, Anxiety, and Stress. DMT is a modality that focuses on the integration of the mind and body. Veterans benefit from body-based practices because they help to focus on the present moment while …

Prospective Memory Impairment In Parkinson Disease Without Dementia: Cognitive Mechanisms And Intervention, Erin R. Foster May 2018

Prospective Memory Impairment In Parkinson Disease Without Dementia: Cognitive Mechanisms And Intervention, Erin R. Foster

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Cognitive impairment among non-demented individuals with Parkinson disease (PD) produces significant disability, reduced quality of life, and restricted participation. This dissertation will cover PD-related impairment in prospective memory, or the ability to remember to execute delayed intentions at the appropriate moment in the future. Prospective memory impairment in PD is increasingly recognized as a functionally and clinically relevant problem and viable target for cognitive intervention. To lay the groundwork for the development of effective interventions for prospective memory in PD, this dissertation examines the cognitive mechanisms underlying prospective memory impairment in PD and the potential of training in a targeted …

Oral Glucose Challenge Impairs Skeletal Muscle Microvascular Blood Flow In Healthy People, Ryan D. Russell, Donghua Hu, Timothy Greenaway, James E. Sharman, Stephen Rattigan, Stephen M. Richards, Michelle A. Keske May 2018

Oral Glucose Challenge Impairs Skeletal Muscle Microvascular Blood Flow In Healthy People, Ryan D. Russell, Donghua Hu, Timothy Greenaway, James E. Sharman, Stephen Rattigan, Stephen M. Richards, Michelle A. Keske

Health & Human Performance Faculty Publications

Skeletal muscle microvascular (capillary) blood flow increases in the postprandial state or during insulin infusion due to dilation of precapillary arterioles to augment glucose disposal. This effect occurs independently of changes in large artery function. However, acute hyperglycemia impairs vascular function, causes insulin to vasoconstrict precapillary arterioles, and causes muscle insulin resistance in vivo. We hypothesized that acute hyperglycemia impairs postprandial muscle microvascular perfusion, without disrupting normal large artery hemodynamics, in healthy humans. Fifteen healthy people (5 F/10 M) underwent an oral glucose challenge (OGC, 50 g glucose) and a mixed-meal challenge (MMC) on two separate occasions (randomized, crossover design). …

Insertion And Presence Of Fine-Wire Intramuscular Electrodes To The Lumbar Paraspinal Muscles Do Not Affect Muscle Performance And Activation During Highexertion Spinal Extension Activities, Szu-Ping Lee, Jo Armour Smith, Matthew Kimber, Kelsey Houk May 2018

Insertion And Presence Of Fine-Wire Intramuscular Electrodes To The Lumbar Paraspinal Muscles Do Not Affect Muscle Performance And Activation During Highexertion Spinal Extension Activities, Szu-Ping Lee, Jo Armour Smith, Matthew Kimber, Kelsey Houk

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Background

Low back pain (LBP) is commonly associated with paraspinal muscle dysfunctions. A method to study deep lumbar paraspinal (i.e. multifidus) muscle function and neuromuscular activation pattern is intramuscular electromyography (EMG). Previous studies have shown that the procedure does not significantly impact muscle function during activities involving low-level muscle contractions. However, it is currently unknown how muscular function and activation are affected during high-exertion contractions.

Objective

To examine the effects of insertion and presence of fine-wire EMG electrodes in the lumbar multifidus on muscle strength, endurance, and activation profiles during high-exertion spinal extension muscle contractions.

Design

Single-blinded, repeated measures intervention …
