Occupational Therapists' Perceptions Of Sensory Processing Evaluation Methods, Grace Hong, Jazminne Orozco Arteaga, Karen Park
Summer 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Background: This study aimed to obtain occupational therapists’ (OTs) experiences and perspectives on current evaluation tools who work with clients with sensory processing challenges in their clinical settings. Method: This research was a mixed-method study. Data was collected from surveys (n = 11) which had a mix of nominal, interval, close-ended, and open-ended questions. Following survey completion, participants were given the option to complete a semi-structured interview (n = 2) consisting of open-ended questions to clarify survey responses and gather additional information about their experiences. Results: The results indicated a high number of various barriers and limitations …

Plan For Retirement Versus The Occupational Impact Throughout Retirement: The Significance Of Identity And Role Transitions, Priscilla Guardado, Amy Lyons-Brown
Summer 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to conduct a mixed methods research study on retired individuals and identifying their occupational identity throughout their retired experience.
METHODS: Using survey methods, a demographic questionnaire was sent out to individuals who signed up to participate in the study. To participate, individuals had to be in the age range of 50-80 years with a minimum of 2 years post retirement. A total of 15 participants initially signed up with a 93% survey response rate (n=14) and 86% (n=13) response rate for completion of the study with an interview.
RESULTS: Most participants reported dealing …

Maintaining physical activity is important for children with cerebral palsy (CP). This study examined whether age predicted habitual physical activity (HPA) or cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in school-aged children with CP and clarified the relationship between HPA and CRF. We utilized cross-sectional data from 39 children with CP (18 girls and 21 boys; mean age 7.44 years; mean body weight 24.76 kg; mean body mass index 15.97 kg/m2; hemiplegic or diplegic CP). The participants wore an accelerometer (ActiGraph) for five days to measure HPA, physical activity energy expenditure (kcal/kg/d), sedentary physical activity (%SPA), light physical activity, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (%MVPA), and …

Muscle-Specific Contributions To Vertical Ground Reaction Force Profiles During Countermovement Jumps: Case Studies In College Basketball Players, Kristof Kipp, Hoon Kim
Muscle-Specific Contributions To Vertical Ground Reaction Force Profiles During Countermovement Jumps: Case Studies In College Basketball Players, Kristof Kipp, Hoon Kim
Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications
The purpose of this study was to determine muscle-specific contributions to various types of vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) profiles in collegiate basketball players. Players from a men's (n = 5; height: 1.84 ± 0.14 m; mass: 92.8 ± 11.4 kg) and a women's (n = 5; 1.71 ± 0.09 m; mass: 80.1 ± 17.6 kg) basketball team completed 3–5 countermovement jumps (CMJ) while motion capture and force plate data were recorded. Muscle-specific contributions to vGRF were calculated through vGRF decomposition analysis. Profiles of vGRF were analyzed based on the presence of unimodal or bimodal peaks during the …

Impact Of Age And School Instruction Mode On Children’S Occupations Early In The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Longitudinal Survey Study, Samuel Nemanich, Gabriel M. Velez, Ann Millard, Anne Pleva
Occupational Therapy Faculty Research and Publications
Importance: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted participation in routines and daily activities. It is unclear how children reengaged in activities during the pandemic, particularly as a new school year began. Differences in school instruction mode (in person, hybrid, or remote) during the pandemic could further affect activity participation.
Objective: To examine changes in sedentary and nonsedentary activity participation in children and to determine whether school instruction mode was associated with participation.
Setting: Home-based survey of U.S. residents.
Participants: Parents of 208 children (46.2% female) between ages 5 and 18 yr were surveyed at two waves: March through April …
