This thesis is not about story or therapy. It moves toward an understanding of subjective and biographical knowing. The purpose of the excursion into story, therapy and the journal is to lift out some of the dynamics of subjective knowing. Subjectivity involves both conscious and unconscious activity. The knowing individual is in relationship with this process. Story, the therapeutic experience and the journal are three modalities that permit this relationship to show itself more explicitly.

The blackfoot disease is an endemic peripheral vascular disease on the southwestern coast of Taiwan. The initial symptoms are numbness or coldness of one or more of the extremities. In order to see if the sensory nerve conductions were influenced, we measured the radial and/ or sural sensory NCV of the patients in the Tainan Provincial Blackfoot Diseases Center.Within the twenty-five subjects of the radial nerve conduction studies, twenty-two patients had slower NCV and there was one patient whose radial NCV couldn’t be detected; i.e. 92% of the blackfoot disease patients had abnormal radial sensory NCV. Fifty-nine cases of aphasia, who had received speech evaluation and were followed up 3 to 6 months after treatment, were divided into four overlapping groups for evaluation. Attempts were made to determine the existence of a critical spontaneous recovery period, the effects of patient age and education level and severity of the disease on recovery form aphasia and the efficacy of speech therapy. The following conclusions were made:1. The first 6 months after onset of aphasia was an important period for spontaneous recovery. 2. Orthostatic Responses Of Blood Pressure, Renin And Aldosterone In Patients With Spinal Transections, Mei-Hue Hsu, I-Nan Lien, Bor-Shen Hsieh, Wan-Yu Chen

Orthostatic stimulations were performed with a tilt table on 32 patients paralyzed by neurologically complete transections of the spinal cord, of whom 10 had cervical cord lesions and 22 had thoracolumbar cord lesions. The hemodynamic and hormonal responses were compared between the 2 groups. In patients with cervical transactions, a 43.1% reduction in systolic pressure, 52.9% reduction in diastolic pressure and 24.2% increase in heart rate were observed during head-up tilt. Eight (80%) of 10 cases had orthostatic hypotension. A 123.4% increase in plasma rennin activity was also found. On the contrary, patients with thoracolumbar transactions showed significantly less reduction …

The effects of short-term residence at high altitude on cardiopulmonary functions at rest and during exercise have been reported, but the change of maximal physical performance on return from altitude is not well established yet. In this study the authors tried to make clear the difference of heart rate, arterial pressure, and physical performance between sea-level and at high altitude of over 3,650 m. Questionnaires returned by 328 physical therapists were analyzed to 1) establish a role definition for public school therapists and 2) determine the educational needs of therapists preparing for public school service. The therapists ranked 15 skills in importance to the role of the public school physical therapist and in urgency of their need to develop each skill. They also indicated which educational format they believed would be most appropriate for developing each skill. The respondents were divided into four groups matched by experience in treating children and by exposure to public school physical therapy. Rank-order correlations within each of these …

This study was undertaken in order to investigate the effect of different feedback variables on isometric strength performance. The variables studied were auditory EMG biofeedback, knowledge of results, and verbal cues.

Nineteen normal adult women volunteered as subjects for the study. Each subject performed nine isometric contractions of the triceps brachii muscle against the resistance of a cable tensiometer. One of three different types of feedback was given during each contraction in order to motivate subjects to generate as much force as possible.
