No single standardized and reliable method exists for measuring postural control in sitting in the stroke patient population. Postural control in sitting is often a portion of the total physical therapy assessment of the hemiplegic patient. The purpose of this research was to investigate the reliability of a functional reach test as a measure of postural control in sitting in the adult hemiplegic population. The measurement method was performed on 23 adult hemiplegic subjects, ages 62-88 years (mean= 73.6 + 7.9 years). Sympathetic skin response (SSR) test is a newly introduced technique to assess sympatetic function in measuring sudomotor activity of the skin. This test is applicable in the detection of autonomic dysfunction which is a usual complaint of diabetic patients. Forty-four diabetic patients with age ranging from 38to 79 years (mean, 60 years ) and 20age-matched normal controls attended this study. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of lumbar traction on the management of grade I L-spine spondylolisthesis. 45 patients diagnosed as grade I L-spine spondylolisthesis by x-ray were studied and divided into two groups. 19 patients as control group, received short wave diathermy and William's flexion exercise, five times per week for 2 months' period. 26 patients as experimental group, in addition to receive the same programs as the control group, the intermittent lumbar traction with 1/3-5/12 body weight was prescribed.The assessments were taken at initial (before treatment), 2 weeks and 2 months after treatment. 8 …

The purposes of this randomized, double-blind, multicenter study were to compare healing of chronic dermal ulcers treated with pulsed electrical stimulation with healing of similar wounds treated with sham electrical stimulation and to evaluate patient tolerance to the therapeutic protocol. Forty-seven patients, aged 29 to 91 years, with 50 stage II, III, and IV ulcers were randomly assigned to either a treatment group (n=26) or a control (sham treatment) group (n=24). A double-blind, clinical study of pulsed electrical stimulation using the Dermapulse® device was carried out on 40 pressure ulcers, randomized to receive either active (stim) or sham treatment.

Electrodes were placed over saline-moistened gauze on the ulcers. An electrical current of 35mA was delivered to the wound tissues at a frequency of 128 pulses per second. Polarity was negative until the wound debrided, then alternated from .positive to negative every three days. Ulcers were treated for 30 minutes twice daily for four weeks, after which sham patients could cross over to active treatment, and stim patients could continue active treatment. …

Adding purpose to daily occupation in order to promote performance is a basic premise of occupational therapy. This study investigated the hypothesis that in individuals with hemiplegia, two added-purpose occupations would elicit more exercise repetitions than a rote exercise occupation. In a counterbalanced order, twenty-one hemiplegic patients aged 51 to 78 experienced all three conditions of a dynamic standing balance exercise involving bending down, reaching , standing up, and extending the arm. One condition of added purposes involved materials (small balls and a target); another prompted imagery of those materials; the third involved the same physical exercise without added purpose. …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate test-retest reliability of the Levels of Rehabilitation Scale IIB (LORS IIB), developed by Carey and Posavac in 1982. Reliability is an important concept when a therapist begins to assess a client's activities of daily living skills. If a test is reliable, the therapist will have a dependable means by which to measure client progress with stability and accuracy.

This study was conducted with eight volunteer post-stroke victims. The study found that the LORS IIB assessment was highly significant in test-retest reliability.

Self-Empowerment Among Adults With Severe Physical Disability: A Case Study, Nancy A. Brooks

An independent living residential setting for severely physically disabled adults was studied through overt observation methods for twenty-two months. The purpose was observation of residents' council actions and expressions of group interests. The council displayed several phases of political structure and behavior. These phases were related to staff and administrative considerations as well as the residents emerging demonstrations of self-empowerment at the group level. The capacity for selfadvocacy emerges as a dynamic enterprise which is clearly related to the structure and interests of the service agency.

The purpose of this study was to use the KINEMETIC COMMUNICATOR KIN-COM III (a computer controlled dynamometer) in the isometric mode to estabilish flexion and extension guidelines for a trunk rehabilitation exercise program.Trunk activity was assessed in 33 young normal adults without LBP history. L5 was taken as the trunk flexion / extension center and the semi-sitting erect position was used to eliminate the gravity effect. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the muscular strength of five patients which were received shoulder hemiarthroplasty. Isokinetic test used by Lido Isokinetic Rehabilitation System included shoulder external rotation, internal rotation, abduction, adduction, flexion and extension at the speed of 60, 120, 180 and 240 degree/sec. There was significant difference (p＜0.05) between involved and non-involved shoulder on the peak torque in external rotation, internal rotation, abduction and flexion. Ther peak torque to body weight ratio also showed significant difference (p＜0.05) in internal rotation, abduction and flexiom. Thirty one patients including eleven young atheletics(thirth four knees totally) were assesed by MRI(1.0T,Picker company)in different pulse sequences T1WI, T2WI & PDWI. The result showed high incidence of combined injuries, especially for meniscal injury coexisted with cruciate injury. There were 52.9% of knees with cruciate injuries in Gr. Within a period of 8 months, we encountered 2 cases of spinal epidural abscess. The site of abscess and causative organism were lumbar spine with E. coli and thoracic spine with S. aureus respectively. The clinical courses of both cases did not follow the four phases described in literature for an epidural abscess. Spiking fever and chillness were the only prominent signs observed initially and back pain was not the chief complaint. Clinically, Pancoast tumor is an uncommon disease. We report one case who had received short wave diathermy dued to right neck, right shoulder and right upper arm pain. Tinally, he was proved as a lung CA with lymph rode and chest wall involvement. After surgical treatment, he received TENS therapy. According to the literature, tumor is contraindicated to diathermy. We postulate this case to remind Reh doctor keep alert in prescribing deep diathermy.

This study compared professional values and goals of three levels of occupational therapy students: (1) seniors in baccalaureate programs (n = 337), (2) students in professional master's programs (n = 95), and (3) students in post-professional master's programs (n = 62). Demographic characteristics and factors influencing career choice were also examined.

Significant differences were found among the three student groups for three professional goals: (1) contributing to theory, (2) doing research, and (3) educating occupational therapy students, and four professional values: (1) intellectual stimulation, (2) exciting life, (3) comfortable life, and (4) helpfulness.
