Objective: Many studies have questionably measured skin temperature to assess the efficacy of cryotherapy. In addition, there is controversy owr the relationship between subcutaneous adipose thickness and intramuscular temperature. Thcret'ore. the twofold purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between skin and intramuscular temperature and to describe the relationships between muscle temperature, skin temperature, room temperature, body core temperature, and subcutaneous adipose thickness. Background and Purpose. This study investigated the magnitude of association between low back pain (LBP) and self-reported factors thought to increase the risk of LBP. Subjects and Methods. Questionnaires were completed by 150 patients who were receiving physical therapy for LBP and by 138 patients who were being treated for other reasons. The solicited information was used to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for the LBP-risk factor association. Results. Low back pain was positively associated with smoking status, pregnancy, industrial vibration exposure, and time spent in a car (odds ratios [is greater than or equal to] 2.21). Daily …

This study analyzes the structure and trends of costs associated with rehabilitation services under the National Health Insurance program. Statistical analysis was performed for costs associated with in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation services in northern Taiwan. 86.97% to 88.07% of total six-month costs were declared for out-patients. Most of the moderate items for physical therapy and occupational therapy were prescribed for out-patients. In contrast, most of the complicated items for physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy were done for in-patients, especially at medical centers. Sonography (US) of the knee has gained in significance in the diagnosis of the meniscal injuries. In order to evaluate the diagnostic capabilities of US in meniscal lesions of the knee, 112 patients with suspected knee injury over a period of six months were studied with high-resolution US equipped with a 10 MHz linear transducer. Eighteen of them also received arthroscopy or magnetic resonance imaging, as a gold standard for detecting the meniscal lesion. A series of studies was designed to investigate the effect of Tai Chi Chuan for developing and maintaining cardiorespiratory function in elderly individuals.In the cross-sectional studies, cardiorespiratory function of 90 middle-aged (range 50-64 yrs) and 76 elderly (range 65-80 yrs) subjects were tested by cycle ergometry. The TCC group practiced TCC with a mean duration of 9.1±4.3 yrs. The control group consisted of 84 sedentary subjects. The VO2max of the TCC group was 15.6-26.8% higher than that of the control group. This study evaluated a novel exercise training program for the individuals diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.Although sixteen patients (M:13; F:3) with moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease participated in this study, only six completed the training programs. Cycle ergometry was used to test and train the patients. The training was performed three times weekly and lasted three months, with each training section lasting 30 to 40 minutes. Adult anaplastic astrocytomas comprise a small subset of intramedullary spinal cord tumors and carry a dismal prognosis. Characteristically, a short prodrome occurs only several weeks before diagnosis, followed by progressive neurological deterioration and death. This article describes a 48-year-old male patient suffering from lower back pain with radiculagia and progressive weakness of both lower limbs for 5 months. The patient was initially diagnosed as having a lower lumbarintervertebral disc herniation and underwent laminectomy with spinal rods instrumentation two months following the diagnosis. Background and Purpose. An important part of treatment planning in physical therapy is effective goal-setting. The Guide to Physical Therapist Practice recommends that therapists identify the patient’s goals and objectives during the initial evaluation as a way to maximize treatment outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine whether therapists seek patient participation in goal-setting and, if so, with what methods. We also examined therapists’ attitudes toward participation and patient satisfaction with the evaluation encounter.

The effect of a high carbohydrate (HCHO) or high fat (HF) diet on time to fatigue and mood state was examined in the present study. Six untrained males, (mean age 26.6 ± 0.74) were randomly assigned to a high fat (HF) or a HCHO diet for seven days. Subjects performed an endurance test at 55% of VO2max following the diet. Time to fatigue and psychometric variables of the Profile of Mood States (POMS) were recorded. Sports drinks have been shown to influence running performance, however, the best methods of hydration are still unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of water versus sports drink (6% carbohydrate/electrolyte) hydration prior to an exercise bout on the performance of middle distance, amateur runners. Ten subjects were randomly assigned to run two trials and began with either ingestion of water or sports drink. Computerized gait analysis (CGA) is a powerful tool used to study the intricacies of human walking. The CGA tool is being used to make objective observations of human movement patterns. Torticollis is a common physical finding in infants, and congenital muscular torticollis is the most commonly reported type. If the only findings are head tilting and facial asymmetry without limitation of ROM of the neck and lack of pathological change of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, infant postural torticollis is the most likely diagnosis. From June, 1995 to May, 1997 we prospectively studied 211 cases of postural and muscular torticollis and excluded other causes of head tilting. The effect of vibration on the median nerve excitability was studied in 18 healthy subjects by applying the vibrator on the skin overlying either the median nerve or the tendon of flexor digitorum superficialis. The excitability index (EI) was used to assess the median nerve excitability. This index was expressed as the ratio of the amplitude of submaximal evoked compound action potentials (SECAP) before vibration (baseline level) to that during or after the vibration. The aim of this investigation is to define the normal values and the boundaries of compound muscle action potential (CMAP) dispersion of a specific age group in Chinese population. Measurements were made from median and ulnar motor nerves of 30 normal volunteers, age between 25-35 years. Supramaximal stimulations were applied to wrist, elbow and axilla of median and ulnar nerves individually. Negative peak areas, amplitudes and durations were recorded and the percentage of dispersion were calculated for each parameter. Using the non-invasive method to monitor the pulmonary artery pressure in the exercise training program of the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients might reduce the incidence of cardiac complication from the pulmonary hypertension and hypoxia. The purpose of this study was to detect the femoral artery pulse pressure and its harmonic changes of the rabbits in the hypoxia status.Ten rabbits underwent the femoral artery catherization for detecting their femoral artery pressure and their harmonics. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between anxiety and anger with depression in women with heart disease. A sample of 50 women participating in cardiac rehabilitation programs in Charleston, WV and Huntington, WV was used to evaluate the inter-relationship of suppressed, expressed, state and trait anger, state and trait anxiety and depression. This non-experimental, descriptive designed study was evaluated by using multiple linear regression and regression coefficients analyzed for the anger and anxiety scores and their interaction. Purpose: A common complication of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is peripheral neuropathy, which may decrease sensory input. The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between decreased sensation and balance performance.

Methods: Fifty subjects, 25 experimental with Type I DM and 25 control, were recruited from the community. Sensory response was tested with Semmes-Weinstein Monofilaments, and the Berg Balance Measure to assess balance performance. The Pearson correlation and Multiple Regression were performed to study the relationship between DM and balance.

The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the trunk muscle activity and range of motion in male and female golfers. With the use of surface electrode electromyography and motion analysis we evaluated three male and three female Division II collegiate golfers. The EMG activity of the erector spinae, gluteus maximus and external oblique muscles was measured bilaterally during the golf swing. The purpose of this study is to compare maximal quadriceps peak torque production in isokinetic strength assessment in the morning and the afternoon. Thn1y male subjects between the ages of21 and 43 volunteered for this study. The subjects were randomly assigned to either an early morning group (7:30 AM to 9 AM) or an afternoon group (2:30 PM to 5 PM). The purpose of this case study was to evaluate balance of individuals following total knee arthroplasty between 12 and 16 weeks postoperatively using the NeuroCom Balance Master® 6.1 system. Two unilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) subjects and ten age-matched control subjects participated in the study. All subjects completed a series of five assessments including weight bearing, limits of stability, walk test, step up and over, and sit to stand on the NeuroCom Balance Master® system.
