Study Design: Case report.

Objective: To describe the knee kinematics and moments of a giving-way trial of a subject with an anterior-cruciate-ligament– (ACL) deficient knee relative to his non–giving-way trials and to healthy subjects during a step-down task.

Background: Episodes of giving way are believed to damage joint structures, therefore treatments aim to prevent giving-way episodes, yet few studies document giving-way events.

Comparison between successful and failed sit-to-stand trials of a patient after traumatic brain injury.

Objective: To compare the peak whole-body center of mass (COM) velocities and joint angular contributions in successful and unsuccessful sit-to-stand (STS) trials in a subject with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Design: Single-case study.

Setting: Motion research laboratory.

Participant: A 24-year-old man who was 3.5 years post-TBI.

Interventions: Not applicable.

Main Outcome Measures: Peak horizontal and vertical velocities of the whole-body COM and peak angular velocities of the ankle, knee, hip, and shoulder joints.

This qualitative study examines the influence of occupational therapists’ worldview on clinical reasoning and action. Recent clinical reasoning research has determined that this complex and multi-faceted process is more than applied theory. Some scholars in occupational therapy have identified intrapersonal factors as influencing clinical reasoning. However, the nature and role of the intrapersonal factors in clinical reasoning remains unclear. To increase understanding of this phenomenon, semi-structured interviews were conducted with expert therapists. A survey of programs providing vocational rehabilitation counselor education demonstrated little available curriculum regarding life care planning and expert testimony. This article reports on the results of a survey study and suggests that curriculum specific to life care planning and case management be added to university rehabilitation counselor training programs.

A qualitative approach was used to explore the perspectives of seven parents of preschool age children with disabilities in Virginia regarding occupational therapy and the transition from early intervention (EI) to early childhood special education (ECSE). Open-ended interviews were used to collect data from each family participant and were presented as individual case reports. A cross-case analysis revealed six common categories and four overarching themes. Results indicated that the transition was viewed positively when parents saw benefits of the change and when they were oriented toward the future. The purpose of this research was to explore the nature of equine-human bonding and its therapeutic value in recovery from trauma. The study sample consisted of six participants who identified that their pre-existing relationships with horses were therapeutic in recovering from various types of trauma (i.e. car accidents, horse-related accidents, work accidents and health trauma). Using a phenomenological perspective and an emotionalist lens, though the use of semi-structured interviews and video-tapes of horse-rider interaction, the study sought to describe the nature of the equine human bond and how it is useful in trauma recovery. To determine whether women participated in sport, even these young nulliparous female athletes, are more prone to have urinary incontinence in Taiwan. Four hundred and forty- six young female students were included in this study. All of them were nulliparous. Our subjects consisted of 260 varsity athletes, 106 athletes of high school, and 80 varsity non-athletes. They were requested to complete questionnaires on the type of major sport, intensity of training, menstrual history, sport injury, and urinary incontinence. The purpose of the study was to investigate the interaction between pain, pain behavior, anxiety, and muscle tension during electrodiagnosis, and to examine the anxiolytic and pain-relieving effects of traditional Chinese music. Two measuring tools, including electrodiagnosis pain behavior checklist (EPBC) and electromyography muscle tension scale (EMTS) were developed to objectively assess the subject's pain and muscle tension, respectively. Sixty-one patients were included in this study and were randomly divided into background music group and control group. The purpose of the study was to measure the peak pressure under the metatarsal heads (MTH) of young men and women in walking with high resolution pressure system and to determine their reliability. The peak pressure of sixteen health men and women, aged from twenty-one to thirty-five years-old, were measured at the first, second and third metatarsal head by high resolution pressure system for ten repetitions using first-step method. Spinal cord infarction is a rare disease. It is even more uncommon that spinal cord infarction occurs in a patient without any cardiovascular disease. Anterior spinal artery syndrome is much more common than the posterior spinal artery syndrome due to the difference in collateral supply. We present two patients with spinal cord infarction. In both patients, the clinical picture was stereotyped: sudden onset of weakness of limbs, sensory loss below the level of infarction and sphincter dysfunction. Treatment for the two patients was supportive and they had a good recovery over a period of weeks.

The clinical appearance of aortic dissection is characterized by the sudden, acute chest or abdominal pain, accompanied by coldness in the limbs and sweating-like symptoms of shock. Absent pulse or asymmetric pulse was observed in some patients. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of noncontact normothermic wound therapy (NNWT) versus standard wound care on chronic full-thickness pressure ulcers.

DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, controlled trial

SETTING: Veterans administration medical center and 7 long-term-care facilities

PATIENTS: 40 inpatients with 43 Stage III and IV pressure ulcers

INTERVENTIONS: A sterile noncontact wound dressing was applied to 21 wounds for 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Each day after the wound was irrigated and the noncontact dressing was changed, a heating element in the dressing was activated for 3 1-hour periods for 12 weeks or until wound closure. It is characterized by calcification and ossification of the spinal ligaments, as well as entheseal ossification within extraspinal sites. The etiology of DISH is still unknown. It can result in chronic pain and stiffness and occasionally severe disability. It often mimiks with spondylosis and ankylosing spondylitis. Primary antiphospholipid syndrome is a rare disease of vasculopathy, which is usually found in the stroke partient with onset during childhood and young adulthood. We report a female patient who had a history of multiple spontaneous abortions in the past. However, the diagnosis was not made until a cerebrovascular accident happened to her. After then, she started to receive anticoagulant therapy and rehabilitation program. No further cerebrovascular accident occurred in the following 22 months. By this report, we remind that a female patient with history of frequent abortion needs to be investigated carefully to search the possibility of antiphospholipid syndrome.

The purpose of this study was to survey the handedness performance in the children with cerebral palsy (CP). One hundred and eighty two cerebral palsied children were referred for study by the primary schools in the Taipei city. Handedness Inventory with two factors was developed and sent to their parents. Response to the survey was 116 (116/182 = 64%) with 101 of them being analyzed in this study. The mean handedness quotient was 34.39. It became 53.33, 46.59, and .32 in diplegias, quadriplegias and hemiplegias, respectively. One-way analysis of variance revealed statistically significant differences among these three types. A survey of effectiveness of home based team rehabilitation at Tai-Chung City was done form January to December 2001. Nineteen subjects (76.0% of total samples) were adopted for analysis. The rehabilitation programs included intervention once per week for six months and three times evaluation of ADL function. The results showed that 1) Both the first three months home based team rehabilitation and the following three months intervention had effectiveness on Barthel ADL index; the scores improved from 42.11±27.90 to 46.32±29.67 and 51.58±30.42 after 3 months and 6 months intervention; 2) Severity had inverse correlation to the score of Barthel ADL …

Bilateral peripheral facial palsy (BPFP) is a rare disease. It occurs in less than one percent of patients with facial palsy. The average annual incidence rate is 0.13 to 0.2 persons per million. The etiologies of BPFP differ a little from those of unilateral peripheral facial palsy. The diagnosis depends on a series of complete examinations. We reported two cases with BPFP. Our purpose in this study was to identify different ventilatory phenotypes among four different strains of rats. We examined 114 rats from three in-house, inbred strains and one outbred strain: Brown Norway (BN;n = 26), Dahl salt-sensitive (n = 24), Fawn-hooded Hypertensive (FHH: n = 27), and outbred Sprague-Dawley rats (SD; n = 37). We measured eupneic (room air) breathing and the ventilatory responses to hypoxia (12% O₂-88% N₂), hypercapnia (7% CO₂), and two levels of submaximal exercise. Objective: To determine the effects of Vicoprofen® and ibuprofen on aerobic performance, agility, and pain after exercise-induced muscle damage. Design: Double-blind randomized, placebo-controlled, repeated-dose clinical trial. Setting: Human-performance and sports-medicine laboratory. Participants: 36 healthy men. Methods and Measures: Baseline testing was performed, 72 hours after which subjects performed eccentric exercise to induce muscle damage. They were evaluated for pain 24 hours postdamage and placed randomly into 3 groups: Vicoprofen (VIC), ibuprofen, or placebo (P). Postdamage testing was performed every day for 5 days.
