Current policies and initiatives call for the integration of social determinants of health into HIV/AIDS prevention and care interventions. According to the World Health Organization’s Commission on Social Determinants of Health, the lower a person’s socioeconomic status, the worse the health outcomes. One way to alleviate poverty among African American women with HIV/AIDS is to help foster their vocational development and economic empowerment. The National HIV/AIDS Strategy Implementation Plan specifically directs federal agencies to find ways to integrate people living with HIV/AIDS into broader employment initiatives. The purpose of this manuscript is to examine medical, psychosocial, financial/legal and vocational social …

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications
A number of studies have focused on the role of specific brain regions, such as the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex during trials on which participants make errors, whereas others have implicated a host of more widely distributed regions in the human brain. Previous work has proposed that there are multiple cognitive control networks, raising the question of whether error-related activity can be found in each of these networks. Thus, to examine error-related activity broadly, we conducted a meta-analysis consisting of 12 tasks that included both error and correct trials. These tasks varied by stimulus input (visual, auditory), response output (button …

Comparison Of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation And Cryotherapy For Increasing Quadriceps Activation In Patients With Knee Pathologies, Conrad M. Gabler, Adam S. Lepley, Timothy L. Uhl, Carl G. Mattacola
Physical Therapy Faculty Publications
Proper neuromuscular activation of the quadriceps muscle is essential for maintaining quadriceps strength and lower extremity function. Quadriceps activation failure is a common characteristic observed in patients with knee pathologies, and it is defined as an inability to voluntarily activate the entire alpha motor neuron pool innervating the quadriceps. One of the more popular techniques used to assess quadriceps activation is the superimposed burst (SIB) technique. The SIB technique is a force-based technique which uses a supramaximal, percutaneous electrical stimulation to activate all of the motor units in the quadriceps during a maximal, voluntary isometric contraction of the quadriceps. Central …

Spinal Cord Injury Induced By Gun Shot Wounds: Implications For Occupational Therapy, Rosanne Dizazzo-Miller
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
People with spinal cord injuries secondary to gunshot wounds present with many unique occupational challenges in terms of their overall health and well-being, and often live in violent cultures that limit occupational performance. Further awareness and understanding of this subgroup can enable occupational therapists to develop appropriate strategies needed to address the many challenges faced by this population. An in-depth understanding of cultural competence is necessary in the identification, planning, and delivery of appropriate and effective treatment. Further, a case example demonstrates the significant influence occupational therapy can achieve in this area of practice.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rare and devastating disease characterized by progressive increases in pulmonary arterial pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance which eventually leads to right ventricular failure and death. Early thought process was that exercise and increased physical activity may be detrimental to PAH patients however many small cohort trials have proven otherwise. In addition to the many pharmaceutical options, exercise and pulmonary rehabilitation have also been shown to increase exercise capacity as well as various aspects of psychosomatic health. As pulmonary and exercise rehabilitation become more widely used as an adjuvant therapy patient outcomes improve and physicians …
