Background
Motion capture virtual reality-based rehabilitation has become more common. However, therapists face challenges to the implementation of virtual reality (VR) in clinical settings. Use of motion capture technology such as the Xbox Kinect may provide a useful rehabilitation tool for the treatment of postural instability and cardiovascular deconditioning in individuals with chronic severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a Kinect-based VR intervention using commercially available motion capture games on balance outcomes for an individual with chronic TBI. Mothering is a complex and multifaceted occupation that encompasses the nurturing work that women engage in. It addition, it has been established that ethnicity, class, and gender have effects on motherhood that need to be taken into account when looking at the occupations of motherhood across cultures. One important task that occurs within a mothers’ daily routine is that of making meals for their children. PURPOSE: This sequential embedded mixed methods study first identified the ways in which occupational therapy leaders experience leadership, then explored the ways in which those same leaders utilized their professional training as occupational therapists within their practice of leadership. METHODS: The twelve participants held formal leadership positions in either academia, clinical practice, or professional associations. The ecology of human performance model of practice was utilized to frame the research study. Data was collected through an initial interview with all 12 participants and through leadership artifacts and a second interview with six participants. The purpose of this study was to examine differences between runners with and without low back pain and a control group of non-runners in demographic, physical/running, and LBP variables. Subjects. This study included 102 subjects in three groups. Subjects, 18 to 55 years old, were from a running store, sports club, and physical therapy clinics in Rockford, IL. Methods. Background: Individuals with Subacromial Pain Syndrome (SPS) often present with a variety of contributing factors. It is possible that a subgroup exists within SPS that has primary impairments of scapular mobility and/or muscle strength. In an attempt to better identify scapular contributions in SPS, the Scapular Assistance Test (SAT) and Scapula Reposition Test (SRT) have been described. Purpose: To determine the relationship between iliotibial band (ITB) length and the presence of patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), compare the difference in ITB length between the painful knee and the non-painful knee in subjects with unilateral PFPS, determine the test-retest reliability, standard error of measurement, and minimal detectable change (MDC) of the Ober test and modified Thomas test, and explore the relationship between the Ober test and the modified Thomas test in measuring ITB length. Military PTs function as autonomous primary care managers (PCMs) for patients with musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders. Objective. The study compared cost of PT management of patients with MSK disorders to management by traditional PCMs; medical doctors (MDs), doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs), advanced registered nurse practitioners (ARNPs), and physician assistants (PAs). Purpose: To determine the differences between PT program NPTE 3-year ultimate pass rates (3YUPR) based on program length and faculty scholarship. To explore relationships between 3YUPR and quality faculty behaviors. Subjects: A total of 112 CAPTE accredited PT educational programs in the United States and Puerto Rico during 2013. Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the treatment of choice for end-stage knee osteoarthritis. Growth in the number of procedures performed annually in the United States is expected to increase steadily. Post-operative rehabilitation settings vary and include both institutional and community based physical therapy (PT) services. Introduction: Injuries to the Ulnar Collateral Ligament of the elbow are a common occurrence in overhead throwing athletes. Clinical assessment of the medial elbow can be assisted using Sonography. Ultrasound imaging can be used to determine the width of the medial joint space. This study will determine whether altering the joint angle in the elbow during various clinical tests has an effect on the width of the medial joint space.

Patient satisfaction is an advancing topic amongst health care professions, but athletic training has not kept up with these advances. The purpose of this study was to assess patient satisfaction and perception of the athletic training profession as related to their exposure to athletic training services over the course of an athletic career. Four hundred one student-athletes from a single institution were sent an email containing a link to the online-questionnaire, 93 student-athletes submitted the questionnaire. Weak negative correlations were found between questions regarding patient satisfaction with athletic training care and patient perception of the athletic training profession. Results imply, …

Time perspective is a fundamental dimension in psychological time, dividing human experiences into past, present, and future. Time perspective influences individuals’ functioning in all occupations, including education. Previous research has examined the relationship between time perspective and academic outcomes, but the same research has not been done, to date, with occupational therapy doctoral students. This quantitative, cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between time perspective and academic success in occupational therapy doctoral students across the United States. A 1‐year pilot quasi‐experimental efficacy study of the Stress Management for Recovery Module (SM) was performed with 37 dual diagnosis (DD) clients from a DD outpatient clinic in the United States. It was hypothesized that clients who received the SM would show more improvement in their ability to manage stress and clean time than controls and when compared to themselves before and after the SM intervention. Outcome data showed that clients who received the SM learned new material and used it to make changes in their lives. Introduction/Purpose: PROMIS values are being adopted due to ease of use and influence on clinical decision making. Studies support the use of PROMIS physical function (PF), pain interference (PI), and Depression (D) for pre-surgical decision making. Patient Acceptable Symptom State (PASS) is a validated outcome measure commonly used in other areas of medicine and surgery that captures when patient’s symptoms reach a daily acceptable level. Background and Purpose: There are few rehabilitation protocols for patients who have undergone glenohumeral microfracture procedure. The purpose of this paper is to present a patient case after both glenohumeral microfracture and Type II SLAP repair procedures and present a rehabilitation protocol.
Methods: The patient in this case is a 41-year-old male who had a sudden onset of pain, mechanical catching, and audible popping in his right shoulder, particularly with athletic activities. This patient was seen for 27 treatments and progressed per the presented protocol.

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the most commonly injured ligaments, with over 250,000 injuries per year in the United States. Previous studies have found that ACL-deficient individuals avoid use of the quadriceps in the injured limb as a means of limiting anterior movement of the tibia in the absence of a functioning ACL. From these results, a study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of isokinetic single-leg cycling in increasing quadriceps muscle recruitment and activation. Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is part of the recommended management plan of pulmonary hypertension (PHTN) and is important to better quality of life and exercise tolerance. This study aimed at determining effectiveness of PR on exercise capacity. Retrospective chart analysis was conducted on patients referred to our PHTN clinic for PR. Patients who had PHTN diagnosed on right heart catheterization (defined by mean pulmonary artery pressure>25 mmHg) and completed a standardized 12-week PR program were considered for the study. The purpose of this qualitative study was to gather information on individuals whom have contributed in expanding occupational therapy around the states of North Dakota, and Wyoming. The interview contained questions which helped to understand our individuals journey, and the contributions made to influence occupational therapy (OT) around the state of North Dakota. This project was completed through background research and a semi structured interview. The interview was audio recorded and then transcribed verbatim. Background: Shoulder pain is becoming increasingly problematic in young players as volleyball gains popularity. Associations between repetitive motion and pain and overuse injury have been observed in other overhand sports (most notably baseball). Studies of adult athletes suggest that there is a shoulder pain and overuse problem present in volleyball players, but minimal research has been done to establish rates and causes in juvenile participants.

Upon discharge from formal rehabilitation programs, individuals with chronic stroke are often constrained by physical limitations, leading to a diminished quality of life, participation restrictions, and an increased risk of further disability. (Rose et al, 2013) Community-based exercise (CBE) programs specific to individuals post-stroke may offer a mechanism to ameliorate these sequelae. (Pang et al, 2005) Current evidence supports the efficacy of CBEs in improving health-related outcomes, quality of life, and social participation post-stroke. (Lau et al, 2016)

Objective. The purpose of this life history study was to gather information regarding the history and evolution of occupational therapy (OT) practice in North Dakota and Wyoming. The life history of Lance Norman and his influence in developing OT in North Dakota was one of 29 stories explored.
Method. The qualitative study used a life history approach. A semi-structured interview was conducted with the participant that was assigned to the researchers via a purposive sampling method. Background and Purpose: Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is a common problem in the world population and total knee replacement has become the gold standard for repair when the OA becomes severe enough. Total knee replacement, however, is not the complete answer to knee OA. Without rehabilitation these patients may struggle to be fully functional. The purpose of this case study was to describe the rehabilitation of a geriatric patient who underwent TKA and benefited from the use of hydrotherapy in his recovery.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the evolution of occupational therapy practice in the lens of the practitioner, Judy Godfread, in her years of practice in North Dakota from 1976-2012. The study collected 29 life histories of influential occupational therapy practitioners in ND and WY. The goal was to detail the contributions of these individuals and how they shaped the context of practice in two rural states.
