Information on the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies is needed to determine related disease burden; underpin evidence-based advocacy; and design, deliver, and monitor safe, effective interventions. Assessing the global prevalence of deficiency requires a valid micronutrient status biomarker with an appropriate cutoff to define deficiency and relevant data from representative surveys across multiple locations and years. The Global Burden of Disease Study includes prevalence estimates for iodine, iron, zinc, and vitamin A deficiencies, for which recommended biomarkers and appropriate deficiency cutoffs exist. Because representative survey data are lacking, only retinol concentration is used to model vitamin A deficiency, and proxy indicators …

Community Health Workers And Trainers Perspectives On Education And Practice: A Qualitative Case Study In The Context Of Maternal And Child Health In Rwanda, Damilola Toki

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Achieving global health-care goals hinges on a health workforce that is available, competent, and productive. Chronic health worker shortages impede the abilities of health systems to provide equitable services, especially in low-resource settings.

Global consensus on bridging health workforce gaps calls for alternatives such as using community health workers (CHWs) to achieve health-care aims. CHWs are laypeople who are closely connected with communities and provide frontline health services. Although CHWs are an integral part of workforces in many countries, with potential to inform global health systems, CHW programs continue to operate on the fringe and are fraught with challenges.

INTRODUCTION: Sitting patterns predict several healthy aging outcomes. These patterns can potentially be measured using hip-worn accelerometers, but current methods are limited by an inability to detect postural transitions. To overcome these limitations, we developed the Convolutional Neural Network Hip Accelerometer Posture (CHAP) classification method.

METHODS: CHAP was developed on 709 older adults who wore an ActiGraph GT3X+ accelerometer on the hip, with ground-truth sit/stand labels derived from concurrently worn thigh-worn activPAL inclinometers for up to 7 d. The CHAP method was compared with traditional cut-point methods of sitting pattern classification as well as a previous machine-learned algorithm (two-level behavior …

To Work In A Field Centered In Health Equity And Social Justice, Public Health Curriculum Reform Is Essential, Leso Munala, Elizabeth Allen

Public Health Faculty Scholarship

In examining the subject of social justice in public health literature, the word “inextricably” is often used to define the inherent tie between the two. As public health aims to improve the health outcomes of all populations, social justice is argued to be the philosophy on which public health is based - its core value. Effectively addressing complex global health problems requires interpretative methods, critical knowledge, historical perspectives, and values infrastructure. We proposed an MPH curriculum reform with a more explicit focus on social justice. With substantial contributions from an interprofessional and diverse advisory board composed of faculty, staff, students, …

The Impact Of Faith Community Nursing Programs For Chronic Disease Screening And Management In Vulnerable Populations: A Comprehensive Review Of The Literature, Gabri Warren

International Journal of Faith Community Nursing

Faith Community Nursing (FCN) programs in the United States (U.S.) emerged in the 1980's; however, the intertwining of health promotion in religious institutions has been present for millennia. Today, challenges facing healthcare are prompting health care providers to find creative and cost-effective methods of providing care. Determining whether FCN positively impacts the health of individuals with limited access to healthcare services would encourage healthcare providers to collaborate with the specialty, reinforcing the benefit of their service. An integrative literature review was conducted to identify studies measuring the impact of FCN on the health outcomes of individuals with hypertension (Baig, Mangione, …

A Community Health Initiative: Health To The Power Of You, Stephanie Hendricks

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

In April 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the number of visits to ambulatory care practices and was reported to have declined by nearly 60%. The extent of this decline is alarming as outpatient visits help manage chronic diseases in patients, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. This trend sparked an interest in pharmacist and student pharmacist, Dr. Cynthia Koh-Knox Sharp and Stephanie Hendricks, respectively, as it offered an opportunity to help serve the Greater Lafayette community. We created Health to the Power of You (HealthYou), which targets two of Lafayette’s neglected populations: community members experiencing …

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

BACKGROUND: Patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) may choose to provide an advanced directive (AD) or delegate a health care proxy (HCP) to make decisions for them if they were to become incapacitated or unable to make decisions for themselves. Although universally recommended for patients to make end of life decisions, there is no consensus on whether these directives are specific enough to guide treatment decisions. The objectives of this study are to examine the presence and specificity of an AD or HCP documented in patients' medical records as well as the demographics and outcomes associated with the …

Advancing Behavioral Health Literacy, James Scollione

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Accessing, comprehending, and using information to make informed decisions and improve one’s overall health or well-being are the foci of health literacy. The concept of behavioral health was introduced in the early 1980s and, since then, it has influenced new ideas (e.g., behavioral health literacy and integrated behavioral health care) and gained research and public attention. My aim is to provide an overview of definitions (i.e., health literacy, mental health literacy, and behavioral health literacy) and their connection to each other. I propose an expanded and honed definition of behavioral health literacy to enhance the behavioral health literacy and well-being …

Objective: The lack of a validated and cross-culturally equivalent scale for measuring individual-level water insecurity has prevented identification of those most vulnerable to it. Therefore, we developed the 12-item Individual Water InSecurity Experiences (IWISE) Scale to comparably measure individual experiences with access, use, and stability (reliability) of water. Here, we examine the reliability, cross-country equivalence, and cross-country and within-country validity of the scale in a cross-sectional sample.

Methods: IWISE items were implemented by the Gallup World Poll among nationally representative samples of 43 970 adults (15 y) in 31 low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). Internal consistency was assessed …
