Can Your Hear Me?: Assessing College Students' Knowledge Of Noise Induced Hearing Loss, Casey Curran
Can Your Hear Me?: Assessing College Students' Knowledge Of Noise Induced Hearing Loss, Casey Curran
Honors Theses
Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is an irreversible condition in which the cells of the inner ear are destroyed by strong sound signals and are no longer capable of relaying said signals to the brain for comprehension. Previous studies found that college students are most at risk for NIHL. Several organizations have created Hearing Conservation Programs; however, their efforts to change students’ behaviors have proven unsuccessful as noted by several research studies. These studies explain that Hearing Conservation Programs and initiatives have not worked because college students do not believe they are susceptible to NIHL. The purpose of this study …
The Relationship Between Caring For Individuals Diagnosed With Prader-Willi Syndrome And Caregiver Stress, Michael Andrew Vice
The Relationship Between Caring For Individuals Diagnosed With Prader-Willi Syndrome And Caregiver Stress, Michael Andrew Vice
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background/Purpose: Chronic stress is related to numerous health risks such as causing an individual to age more rapidly than an individual with less stress (Oliveira, et al., 2010; Bauer, 2009; McEwen, 2002). Other aging problems related to chronic stress are Alzheimer’s disease (Peterson et al., 2007) and premature death (Canizzo et al., 2011). Stress can lead to mental health issues such as depression (Wiegner, 2015; Hammen, 2005) and anxiety (Wiegner et al., 2015). Stress has also been linked to cardiovascular disease (Seldenrijk, 2015), asthma (Rod et al., 2012; Chen & Miller, 2007), obesity (McInnis et al., 2014), diabetes (Salpea, 2010), …

University Of Montana Students And The Gardasil Vaccine, Markie C. Glidewell
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Gardasil® is a vaccine for human papilloma virus (HPV), a sexually transmitted virus that can cause genital warts, cervical cancer, and other diseases. Males and females ages 9-26 are recommended to receive the Gardasil® vaccination. Most students attending the University of Montana (UM) are within the recommended age range for Gardasil® vaccination and would benefit from receiving it if they have not yet done so. Gardasil® is available at the Health Services Pharmacy on the UM campus and is often covered by insurance plans with no patient copay. In the fall semester of 2016, surveys were …

COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE (CAM) AND ADOLESCENT BODY MASS INDEX (BMI): A NATIONAL POPULATION-BASED STUDY
Abstract
Background
Childhood obesity rates in the United States have remained around 17% since the 1990s - this figure translates to an estimated 12.7 million obese children. Maintaining a healthy weight through adolescence may limit subsequent health risks in adulthood. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) encompasses a variety of non-pharmacological treatments and lifestyle choices that have been utilized in addition to or in place of typical Western medicine. The relationship between adolescent Body mass index (BMI) and the use of complementary and alternative medicine has …

Designing Effective Messages To Promote Future Zika Vaccine Uptake, Jeanine Guidry
Designing Effective Messages To Promote Future Zika Vaccine Uptake, Jeanine Guidry
Theses and Dissertations
The Zika virus is associated with the devastating birth defect microcephaly, and while a vaccine was not yet available in early-2017, several were under development. It is imperative to identify effective communication strategies to promote uptake of a new vaccine, particularly among women of reproductive age. Moreover, though the Zika outbreak has received much social media attention, little is known about these conversations on Instagram. The purpose of this dissertation, therefore, was to understand current Zika-focused communication on Instagram and to inform effective communication strategies to promote future Zika vaccine uptake intent.
The study aims were: (1) explore Zika conversations …
Examining Preference Of Home-Based Telemental Health Among Rural Veterans, Paige Dixon
Examining Preference Of Home-Based Telemental Health Among Rural Veterans, Paige Dixon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Rural veterans face significant disparities to health care that have resulted in lower physical and mental health related quality of life when compared to their urban counterparts (Weeks et al., 2006). Such disparities are further complicated by the six-fold increase in prevalence of mental health diagnoses among Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans (Seal et al., 2009). These rising rates are particularly relevant to rural veterans as they represent 41% of the overall Veteran Health Administration enrollees, but only 19% of the general population (U.S., Department of Veterans Affairs, 2012; U.S. Census Bureau, 2014). Rural veterans face three …
