First Profunda Artery Perforator Flap For Breast Reconstruction Performed At A Va Hospital, Kaitlynne Pak, Amanda Fang, Garrison Leach, Riley Dean, Sarah Crowley
Medical Student Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The profunda artery perforator (PAP) flap for breast reconstruction originated by Dr. Robert J. Allen in 2010 after multiple failed attempts at using muscle-sparing transverse rectus abdominal muscle (MS-TRAM) flap and implants. This flap method was initially approached due to the patient’s request for an autologous tissue graft that did not sacrifice muscle. The PAP flap has grown significantly in popularity and usage in breast reconstruction and makes up to about 16% of autologous breast reconstruction, coming second to DIEP flaps (76%). This well-tolerated, muscle-sparing approach is ideal for patients without sufficient abdominal fat (low BMI or previous abdominal liposuction) …

Trends In Cancer Prevalence In Punjab, Pakistan: A Systematic Study From 2010 To 2016, Sana Hafeez, Asmat Mahmood, Rizwan Ullah Khan, Naila Malkani
Journal of Bioresource Management
Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally. However, in Pakistan, in the absence of a national cancer registry, it is difficult to predict the current status of cancer incidence. Therefore, a need was felt to design a study that can give a depiction of the prevalence of common cancer types and their relevance to the local population in the absence of a proper cancer registry system. In view of this, data was collected from 2010 to 2016 for breast, prostate, head and neck, cervical and colorectal cancer from the cancer hospitals and centres located all over Punjab, Pakistan. …

Case: A 64-year-old male suffered a pathologic left femoral neck fracture. Biopsy demonstrated metastatic urothelial cancer with a non-muscle invasive bladder cancer primary confirmed by cystoscopy. Patient underwent hemiarthroplasty, chemotherapy, radiation, and eventually, a conversion to total hip arthroplasty. Today, over a decade from initial surgery, the patient remains alive and highly functional. To our knowledge, this is the only report of bone metastatic bladder cancer with over 10-year survival. Conclusion: Bladder cancer metastatic to bone has a 5-year survival rate of 3%. Surgical resection of metastasis with reconstruction may confer a survival benefit in bony oligometastatic bladder cancer.
Health Literacy: Approach To Colon Cancer In African Americans, Judith Jefferson-Gordon
Health Literacy: Approach To Colon Cancer In African Americans, Judith Jefferson-Gordon
Doctor of Nursing Practice Program Projects
Health literacy is vitally important for African-Americans (AA), with higher incidence and mortality rates of colon cancer compared to Caucasians nationally and in Ohio. Larrabee's Model for Change to EBP and Self -Efficacy Middle range nursing theory guided this DNP project. A retrospective chart review of AA patients with colon cancer was completed to determine types of teaching methods used by nurses during the clinical encounter. A convenience sample (8%) of AA patients received colon cancer care in the ambulatory setting at the healthcare facility in the Midwest. More than half were female and the remainder were male (65% vs. …
Neighborhood-Level Influences On Delays In Diagnostic Follow-Up From Mammography Screening In African-American Women: A Systematic Review, Barbara A. Fowler
Neighborhood-Level Influences On Delays In Diagnostic Follow-Up From Mammography Screening In African-American Women: A Systematic Review, Barbara A. Fowler
Nursing Faculty Publications
Although there has been a steady decrease in breast cancer deaths among all women (pooled data) age 40 to 65 years during the past two decades in the United States, breast cancer deaths remain substantially higher among African-American women than White women (32.4% vs. 23.9%), resulting in an overall lower five-year survival rate (78.4% vs. 91.2%). These differences are primarily due to delays in diagnostic follow-up from mammography screening (MS) (ACS, 2012]. Following the secondary research data methods by analyzing the popular medical databases and articles published in the peer-reviewed medical journals in US during 2004-2014 the author would like …

The Face Of Cancer In Montgomery County Ohio: A Look At The Population At Risk, Chika E. Okere
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
The purpose of this study was to identify the population in Montgomery County Ohio who are at the greatest risk for cancer based on age, sex, and race/ethnicity, family history and demographics. The research will also look at modifiable behaviors such as use of tobacco products, physical inactivity, obesity, poor nutrition and heavy drinking of alcohol that increase the risk and identify areas of improvement in data collection for reporting purposes. During 1996-2006, cancer was the second-leading cause of death for residents of Montgomery County.
Methods: Age, sex, race/ethnicity of people in Montgomery County with cancer were examined and using …

Background: Disparities exist in cancer incidence and mortality between specific population groups in the United States. Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer diagnosed in women. Breast cancer ranks as the second highest leading cause of death for women in the state of Ohio and in the United States. Perhaps more concerning, breast cancer is the leading cause of death for Hispanic women and ranks second for white, black, Asian, and Native American women. Specifically, women of low socioeconomic status (SES) have been shown to have lower rates of survival.
Methods: A descriptive study of …

Department of Surgery Faculty Publications
Background
Patients with unresectable cancers of the upper gastrointestinal tract often suffer severe symptoms due to pain, nausea and vomiting, weight loss, cachexia, and poor food tolerance. This can be related to gastric and duodenal cancers causing intrinsic obstruction of the intestinal lumen or pancreatic and biliary cancers causing extrinsic biliary compression. Management options vary depending on the site of obstruction, the patient’s functional status, the patient-defined goals of care, and estimated prognosis. Fast Fact #45 discussed medical management options. This Fact Fact reviews interventional approaches for upper GI obstructions, especially when further radiation, chemotherapy, medical management, or curative surgical …

AIM: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common primary brain tumor in humans, and it is highly invasive. Doxycycline, first identified as an antimicrobial agent, is a nonspecific inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Our objective was to investigate the anti-MMP effect of doxycycline at therapeutically acceptable levels on glioma cells in vitro.
METHODS: The MTT assay was used to determine the anti-proliferative effects of doxycycline. MMP2 activity and expression were determined by gelatinase zymography and real-time quantitative RT-PCR, respectively. Cell invasion was assessed by Matrigel invasion assay.
RESULTS: Doxycycline exerted mild anti-proliferative effects on all three glioma cell lines …
