Accessible Outdoor Recreation For Individuals With Physical Disabilities: An Educational Series, Ashlyn Leonard, Zeida Gutierrez
Summer 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium
This capstone paper explores the effects of physical disabilities on outdoor recreation. An educational workshop was designed and delivered to occupational therapy students at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. The purpose of the workshop was to increase their awareness of accessible outdoor recreation that way they can better mitigate barriers experienced by their future clients when trying to participate in desired outdoor activities. A pre- and post-survey was administered and analyzed to determine the applicability and effectiveness of the workshop in delivering the information.

This capstone project aimed to determine the efficacy of a newly developed and delivered online program that focuses on educating individuals experiencing Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) on how to create habits with decreased executive functioning skills. With the rise in substance use and addiction related disorders throughout the United States, the urge to implement various intervention approaches that support long term recovery is crucial (Radesi, 2025). By focusing on habit formation, the goal of this capstone is to educate individuals on how to create habits that promote increased participation in meaningful occupations.

This capstone project explores personalized background music as a client-centered intervention to enhance engagement, emotional well-being, and quality of life for older adults in a senior living community. Conducted at Treyton Oak Towers in Louisville, KY, the project integrated meaningful music into daily leisure and social activities. Key goals included building rapport with residents and staff, assessing residents’ functional needs, planning and adapting activities, and incorporating music preferences to support participation and enjoyment. Advancing Mental Health Awareness Among Persons Of Color: An Occupational Therapy Perspective, Irene Rattitham, Cassandra Nelson
Summer 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium
This capstone project aimed to advance mental health awareness among persons of color (POC) residing in a skilled nursing facility by developing and implementing a culturally responsive psychoeducational program. Informed by the Person-Environment-Occupation (PEO) model, trauma-informed care, and mindfulness-based practices, the program addressed barriers such as stigma, limited awareness, and cultural perceptions of mental health. A needs assessment guided the creation of an 8-module curriculum covering topics like emotional regulation, family involvement, and accessing support. Educational materials were translated into Spanish, Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese to enhance accessibility. As of 2022, there are 107,601 people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) in California with 78% of cases above 70 years old (California Department of Public Health, 2024). Falls are the most common cause of injury for adults 65 years and older with over 14 million falls reported annually (CDC, 2024). Occupational therapy is an underutilized profession that can assist both people with PD and caregivers to reduce falls and injuries from occurring.

An epidemiology survey reported a prevalence of 2.8 million individuals diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in the year of 2020. In Northern California the prevalence of MS has increased with an estimated 288 cases per 100,000 individuals. Studies report less than 40% of individuals with MS have used occupational therapy services, and when they do, it is frequently in reaction to more severe symptoms than taking preventative measures.
