Social Cognition, Empathy And Functional Outcome In Schizophrenia, Amy Sparks, S. Mcdonald, B. Lino, M. O'Donnell, M. Green

Amy E.T. Sparks

Social and occupational functioning difficulties are a characteristic feature of schizophrenia, and a growing body of evidence suggests that deficits in social cognition contribute significantly to these functional impairments. The present study sought to investigate whether the association between social cognition and social functioning in schizophrenia would be mediated by self-reported levels of empathy. Thirty outpatients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, and twenty-five healthy controls completed a well-validated facial affect processing task (Ekman 60-faces facial task from the Facial Expressions of Emotion - Stimuli and Tests; FEEST), The Awareness of Social Inference Test (TASIT; to assess emotion …

Development Of An Immunocontraceptive Vaccine. Current Status, H. Feng, J. Sandlow, Amy Sparks, A. Sandra

Amy E.T. Sparks

Development of an effective and modern contraceptive vaccine is a key factor in the global issue of regional population growth as well as agricultural, medical, economic and social development. A review was done of the current medical literature concerning development of an immunocontraceptive vaccine and relative molecular biology technology. Various approaches have been taken to identify candidate-specific antigens for immunocontraceptive development, such as sperm, zona pellucida and hormonal antigens. Suppressed fertility and the reversibility of these effects on mammalian species, including humans, have been demonstrated. The successful results obtained so far support the continued investigation for an effective immunocontraceptive vaccine.

Comparison Of Microscopic Epididymal Sperm Aspiration And Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection/In-Vitro Fertilization With Repeat Microscopic Reconstruction Following Vasectomy: Is Second Attempt Vas Reversal Worth The Effort?, J. Donovan, M. Dibaise, Amy Sparks, J. Kessler, J. Sandlow

Amy E.T. Sparks

Since 1986, we have performed microscopic reconstruction in 18 men following failed microscopic vasectomy reversal. Between 1994 and 1996, nine couples have undergone microscopic epididymal sperm aspiration (MESA)/ intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatment for male infertility due either to congenital absence of the vas deferens (CAVD) or inoperable excurrent duct obstruction. We compared the cost efficiency of repeat vasectomy reversal to that for MESA combined with ICSI/in-vitro fertilization (ICSI/IVF). The cost of male partner procedures (vasectomy reversal, MESA) was based on physician and hospital charges, while the cost of ICSI/IVF included preparation of the female partner (medications and physician charges) …

Achievement Of Pregnancy In Globozoospermia With Y Chromosome Microdeletion After Icsi., Hulusi Zeyneloglu, Volkan Baltaci, E. Duran, Esra Erdemli, Sertac Batioglu Jun 2013

Achievement Of Pregnancy In Globozoospermia With Y Chromosome Microdeletion After Icsi., Hulusi Zeyneloglu, Volkan Baltaci, E. Duran, Esra Erdemli, Sertac Batioglu

Eyup Hakan Duran

Pregnancy achieved with sperm from a patient with globozoospermia is rare, even after ICSI, since the activation of the oocyte may not occur in this disorder. Therefore, activation of the oocytes by piezoelectricity or calcium ionophores has been suggested, although spontaneous activation of the oocyte after ICSI has been reported in some cases. We report a successful pregnancy in a couple in which the male partner had globozoospermia with microdeletions in the Y chromosome with no further assisted activation after ICSI. During the diagnostic study of the husband, increased numerical chromosome abnormalities after fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH) and microdeletions in …

Presence And Significance Of Somatic Cell Apoptosis Markers In Human Ejaculated Spermatozoa., Sergio Oehninger, Mahmood Morshedi, S-L Weng, Steve Taylor, E. Duran, Stephen Beebe Jun 2013

Presence And Significance Of Somatic Cell Apoptosis Markers In Human Ejaculated Spermatozoa., Sergio Oehninger, Mahmood Morshedi, S-L Weng, Steve Taylor, E. Duran, Stephen Beebe

Eyup Hakan Duran

Ejaculated spermatozoa, particularly in infertile men, have been shown to display morphological and biochemical features that are typical of an apoptotic phenotype in somatic cells. Deregulation of apoptosis is known to play roles in a number of disease processes, but roles for apoptosis in ejaculated spermatozoa and male infertility are poorly defined or have not been studied. Preliminary data demonstrated that populations of ejaculated spermatozoa express: (i) various degrees of plasma membrane translocation of phosphatidylserine and DNA fragmentation; and (ii) active caspase-3, the main executor of apoptosis in somatic cells, with an apparent exclusive cellular location to the mid-piece. Tests …

Somatic Cell Apoptosis Markers And Pathways In Human Ejaculated Sperm: Potential Utility As Indicators Of Sperm Quality, S. Taylor, S. Weng, P. Fox, Eyup Duran, M. Morshedi, S. Oehninger, S. Beebe

Eyup Hakan Duran

In this study we extended earlier work to determine whether sperm respond to somatic cell apoptotic stimuli and whether apoptotic phenotypes are significant indicators of human sperm quality. We evaluated ejaculated sperm from fertile donors and subfertile patients following purification of fractions of high and low motility. In unstimulated conditions, caspase enzymatic activity was higher in motile fractions from subfertile patients than in donors, and was higher in low motility fractions from both groups. Staurosporine, but not a Fas ligand or H2O2, significantly increased caspase activity, but only in high motility fractions. Procaspase-3, -7 and -9 and low levels of …
