Optimizing Npo Times In Infant Outpatient Surgical Patients, Julie Colangelo Ward Mar 2023

Optimizing Npo Times In Infant Outpatient Surgical Patients, Julie Colangelo Ward

DNP Projects

Background: All patients are standardly kept NPO prior to surgery to minimize aspiration risks. Increased NPO times for infants has been found to lead to patient distress, hemodynamic instability, ketoacidosis and acid-base imbalances. Optimizing NPO times for young pediatric patients helps to decrease fasting times, which minimizes the safety concerns listed above.

Objectives: The objective of this project was to implement specific education instructions to parents of infants during the pre-operative phone calls and confirm their understanding of this education through the teach-back method.

Methods: The intervention for this project added educational instructions with a teach-back question into the verbal …

Predictors Of Early Heart Failure Rehospitalization Among Older Adults With Preserved And Reduced Ejection Fraction: A Review And Derivation Of A Conceptual Model, Carolyn B. Sue-Ling Phd, Rn, Mpa, Nalini Jairath

Publications

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is prevalent among older adults who suffer with either heart failure preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) or heart failure reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and have a high rate of early HF rehospitalization. Preventing early rehospitalization is complex because of major differences between the two subtypes of HF as well as inadequate predictive models to identify key contributing factors. OBJECTIVE: To present research addressing relationships between selected clinical, hemodynamic, social factors, and early (≤ 60-day) HF rehospitalization in older adults with HFpEF and HFrEF, derive a conceptual model of predictors of rehospitalization, and understand to what extent the …

Navigating Midwifery Solidarity: A Feminist Participatory Action Research Framework, Katherine Buchanan, Elizabeth Newnham, Sadie Geraghty, Lisa Whitehead Mar 2023

Navigating Midwifery Solidarity: A Feminist Participatory Action Research Framework, Katherine Buchanan, Elizabeth Newnham, Sadie Geraghty, Lisa Whitehead

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background:

A core aspect of midwifery philosophy is the optimisation of normal physiology; however, this has been challenged as a radical idea in the medicalisation of birth. Research has demonstrated the benefits of midwifery in improving outcomes for both mothers and babies. The understanding of midwifery benefits fails to reach wider sociocultural contexts as births becomes more medicalised. Midwifery research requires an action arm, to help translate theory to practice and mobilise midwives in solidarity with women towards action and change.

Aim:

The aim of this article is to describe a Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR) by establishing the philosophical …

Venous Leg Ulcers: An Analysis Of Nursing Knowledge, Shelia Moore-Miller Mar 2023

Venous Leg Ulcers: An Analysis Of Nursing Knowledge, Shelia Moore-Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project evaluated the knowledge level of wound center nursing staff on venous leg ulcer etiology and treatments after an educational intervention. To determine the effectiveness of the educational intervention, participants completed a pretest and posttest evaluation. Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are chronic lower extremity ulcers affecting older Americans. VLUs are painful and negatively affect activities of daily living. Inadequate VLU treatment can become an infectious process that can ultimately threaten limb existence. A quantitative, quasi-experimental study was conducted over three weeks in a hospital-based wound care center in central Florida. The theoretical framework applied to this project is Lydia …

Burnout In Medical Assistants In Primary Care: Can Mindfulness Be A Solution?, Natalee D. Calais Mar 2023

Burnout In Medical Assistants In Primary Care: Can Mindfulness Be A Solution?, Natalee D. Calais

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Burnout is described as feelings associated with emotional exhaustion, depersonalization of patients, and a loss of sense of personal accomplishment and it is unique to healthcare workers. Current research highlights this condition among physicians, nurses, and mid-level providers; however, insufficient research exists regarding the effects of burnout on medical assistants. Research led to mindfulness as a possible solution defined as an intentional regulation of attention and awareness of the present moment. This project sought to see if mindfulness practices could be utilized to mitigate the effects of burnout in medical assistants. It was hypothesized that mindfulness could be a solution. …

Botulinum Neurotoxin A4 Has A 1000-Fold Reduced Potency Due To Three Single Amino Acid Alterations In The Protein Receptor Binding Domain, William H. Tepp, Marite Bradshaw, Alexander P. Gardner, Rebecca L. Kaufman, Joseph T. Barbieri, Sabine Pellett

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Botulinum neurotoxin subtype A4 (BoNT/A4) is ~1000-fold less potent than BoNT/A1. This study addresses the basis for low BoNT/A4 potency. Utilizing BoNT/A1-A4 and BoNT/A4-A1 Light Chain-Heavy Chain (LC-HC) chimeras, HC-A4 was responsible for low BoNT/A4 potency. Earlier studies showed BoNT/A1-receptor binding domain (Hcc) bound a β-strand peptide (556–564) and glycan-N559 within Luminal Domain 4 (LD4) of SV2C, the BoNT/A protein receptor. Relative to BoNT/A1, the Hcc of BoNT/A4 possesses two amino acid variants (D1141 and N1142) within the β-peptide binding interface and one amino acid variant (R1292) located near the SV2C glycan-N559. …

Journal of Graduate Education Research

Although cancer clinical pathways (CPs) are standardized care plans for the treatment of specific cancers, they are not commonly used in Nigerian hospitals. Many Nigerian clinicians do not have the requisite skill for developing and implementing the use of CPs. Critical reflections provide an important perspective in the philosophy, design, implementation, and outcome of interventions. This paper critically reflects on the design and implementation of a multidisciplinary, blended learning (i.e. online and in-person) course which sought to improve the competence of local doctors, nurses, and allied students in developing clinical pathways. Reflective feedback was obtained from a mix of project …
