Western Australian Mothers' Experiences Of Breastfeeding Support In Hospital After Birth: A Mixed Methods Study, Justine Van Der Watt
Western Australian Mothers' Experiences Of Breastfeeding Support In Hospital After Birth: A Mixed Methods Study, Justine Van Der Watt
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Background: The benefits of breastfeeding are well established for infants, mothers and the community, with the World Health Organisation recommending that infants be exclusively breastfed up to six months of age with an achievable goal of 70% globally. Yet in Australia only 15-37% may be reaching that goal. There have also been reported benefits and desires for mothers to be supported with their breastfeeding in order to increase and prolong breastfeeding duration and exclusivity, especially early after birth. However, there is limited research or literature exploring what experiences mothers are having with breastfeeding support, especially during their hospital admissions in …
The Impact Of Reported Antibiotic Allergy In Paediatric Care And Antimicrobial Stewardship, Annabelle Arnold
The Impact Of Reported Antibiotic Allergy In Paediatric Care And Antimicrobial Stewardship, Annabelle Arnold
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Antimicrobial resistance is rising while new drug development declines, making antimicrobial stewardship crucial for optimizing use, preventing resistance, and improving patient outcomes. Antibiotics are vital for bacterial infections, but overuse and inappropriate prescribing have contributed to resistance. Although 5-35% of the global population reports β-lactam allergies, over 90% of reports are inaccurate. Adults have the highest prevalence; however, these labels are often acquired in childhood, with a notable increase among children recently. Unverified allergy labels hinder antimicrobial stewardship, leading to longer hospital stays, alternative prescribing, and a higher risk of adverse events.
This thesis sought to evaluate current evidence regarding …
Preparing For End Of Life In A New Country: A Grounded Theory Study On African Migrants Living In Australia, Gertrude Gondwe Phiri
Preparing For End Of Life In A New Country: A Grounded Theory Study On African Migrants Living In Australia, Gertrude Gondwe Phiri
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
African migration to Australia has grown in the past 20 to 25 years with many migrants staying permanently. This has led to migrants dying away from their birthplaces where family is responsible for end-of-life care planning for the individual. Although migrating to Australia is considered a great achievement, many migrants also experienced challenges. Previous studies have explored the barriers faced by migrants in relation to end-of-life care but have not addressed the cause of those challenges. This constructivist grounded theory study examines how migrants from three African countries, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe (MZZ) prepare for end-of-life in Australia. The study …

The Development, Implementation And Evaluation Of A Novel Intervention For Delirium Prevention And Management In An Adult Intensive Care Unit: A Mixed Methods Study, Gideon Ugochukwu Johnson
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Background: Delirium is a prevalent acute brain dysfunction in patients within intensive care units. Delirium is marked by a fluctuating mental state, inattention, and altered consciousness. This condition affects a substantial proportion of patients in intensive care units, and which leads to increased mortality, severe physiological and psychological consequences, and a significant economic burden on healthcare systems. Despite the evidence that supports the use of non-pharmacological interventions to prevent or minimise the impact of delirium such as orientation, sensory stimulation, early mobilisation, and family involvement, their implementation in intensive care units remains inconsistent. The involvement of family members in the …

Journal of Appalachian Health
Introduction: The newly emergent COVID-19 virus reached pandemic levels in March 2020. By the middle of August 2020, there were over 1 million deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the U.S., with those in rural areas outpacing urban counterparts. Prior to emergency approval of the Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccine formulations, mitigation efforts addressing individual behavior were challenging. However, even with the entrance of these three new vaccines, herd immunity was not achieved in rural areas, as vaccine uptake remained low there. Although there has since been an abundance of COVID-19-related research addressing health literacy, vaccine hesitancy and overall …

Review Of: Caring For The Low German Mennonites: How Religious Beliefs And Practices Influence Health Care—Judith Kulig, Christina Klassen Jeffries
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
My personal interest in reviewing this particular book is that I am a Low German speaking Mennonite involved in healthcare. As a disclaimer, I am not super fluent in the language. I was also not technically raised in the culture as described in this book, but I live in this community and know many people in this culture. As a healthcare worker, I was interested in reading this book to see what would be applicable to my practice. I was also curious how the book would apply to living in the Low German community.
