Experience Of Clinical Judgment Among Senior Associate Degree Nursing Students: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Hollie Bell Elmore
Experience Of Clinical Judgment Among Senior Associate Degree Nursing Students: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Hollie Bell Elmore
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This transcendental phenomenological study aimed to understand the experience of clinical judgment for senior associate degree nursing students at a rural community college. The students completed a 60-minute simulation involving the cardiac system and debriefed after the active simulation. The theory that guided this study was David Kolb’s experiential learning theory, which defines the learning process as creating knowledge through transforming experience. Because the experiential learning theory is flexible, it can be readily applied to many disciplines such as nursing. This theory also helped to incorporate Tanner’s Clinical Judgment Model. Data for this transcendental qualitative study were collected using semi-structured …
Medication Errors In Hospitals, Isata Jalloh
Medication Errors In Hospitals, Isata Jalloh
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In hospitals, the issue of medication errors poses a serious problem, often leading to substantial health complications and, in some cases, even deaths among hospitalized as well as discharged patients. This health challenge not only imposes a substantial financial burden on patients, insurance providers, and Federal/State governments but also contributes to elevated healthcare expenses, hindering the effective allocation of resources to address other healthcare issues. Understanding the triggers of medication errors in hospitals is critical in solving this problem. The purpose of this integrative review is to determine the causes/triggers of medication errors in hospitals. This review will highlight the …
Fall Prevention In Behavioral Health, Kanesha Moss
Fall Prevention In Behavioral Health, Kanesha Moss
All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects
Problem:
Falls in hospital settings pose significant safety and financial risks, particularly in Behavioral Health Units (BHU), where fall rates often exceed national averages. Despite traditional fall prevention practices, such as risk assessments and post-fall huddles, the target BH unit continued to experience high fall rates, failing to meet the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) standards. The lack of alignment between fall prevention strategies and the unique needs of behavioral health patients contributed to these unmet targets.
Aim of the Project:
This project aimed to reduce the number of falls in a 41-bed BH unit by 20% over …

Association Between Depressive Symptoms And Dynamic Balance Among Young Adults In The Community, Jinyoung Park, Cynthia Lee, Ye Eun Nam, Hyunhwa Lee
Nursing Faculty Research
Background: Detecting and addressing depression symptoms at their outset can reduce the burden on individuals and society; however, it has a limitation in that such evaluations mainly rely on self-reports. Several studies have demonstrated a strong association between motor symptoms and early depression. We aimed to associate body balance measured by the Lower Quarter Y Balance Test (YBT-LQ) with depressive symptoms among young adults in the community, to confirm the current evidence that depression negatively influences body balance. Research question: Is the YBT-LQ an objective tool for measuring and evaluating young adults’ depression risks, as well as assessing whether depression …

Lived Experiences: Growing Up With A Seriously Mentally Ill Parent, Deborah Lindell, Elliane Irani
Faculty Scholarship
Introduction: Individuals with serious mental illness often have persistent and disruptive symptoms. These can profoundly affect their children's lives, exposing them to adverse social and psychological conditions. Such conditions can result in traumatic lived experiences during childhood, which can carry over into adulthood, influencing their self-perceptions and shaping their attitudes toward themselves and society. To gain insights into this phenomenon, this study explored the lived experiences of adults who grew up with a parent with serious mental illness and their perceptions of their lives in adulthood. Design: This study used an interpretive phenomenological design. Methods: Participants were invited to voluntarily …

Is Long-Term Survival Higher In Patients Who Receive Propofol-Based Total Intravenous Anesthesia During Colorectal Cancer Surgery Compared To Volatile Anesthesia, Shad Anthony Mitchell
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The study reviewed several retrospective cohort studies that examined the impact of propofol-based total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) versus volatile anesthesia (VA) on the long-term survival of colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery patients. Eight studies found no significant difference in mortality between the two anesthesia types, while three studies indicated a significant decrease in all-cause mortality favoring propofol TIVA. The studies had varying follow-up periods, with some extending to five years. Notably, two studies controlled the type of volatile anesthetic used, specifically sevoflurane and desflurane. The findings suggest a potential survival advantage for propofol TIVA, warranting further investigation.

How we talk about perinatal mental health matters, even in the minute details of words on screening forms. Any shifts towards removing barriers to screening, reducing stigma, encouraging disclosures, raising awareness related to symptom prevalence and the breadth symptom related experiences, and creating opportunities for connecting with support and care are essential.
In the EPDS-US, we have adapted the wording of the original Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), using a respectful care and trauma-informed approach with a focus on optimizing patient experiences and clinical utility while maintaining reliability and validity of the 10 item scale. Many individuals report feelings of …

INTRODUCTION: Many women experience the debilitating symptoms of hot flashes, night sweats, memory loss and vaginal dryness during the perimenopausal, menopausal, and postmenopausal period. Limited knowledge and awareness about the menopausal experience by patients and clinicians has been correlated to delays in recognizing and managing symptoms. The practice site for this quality improvement project did not have a formal process for screening, evaluating and educating patient’s menopausal awareness and goals for quality of life.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this project was to implement and evaluate a process for routinely screening and educating all patients between 40 and 65 years seen …

The Association Between Early Exposure To Antibiotics And Childhood Asthma Incidence, Victoria Fischer
The Association Between Early Exposure To Antibiotics And Childhood Asthma Incidence, Victoria Fischer
Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research
This review examines the association between early exposure to antibiotics and the incidence of asthma in childhood, highlighting significant public health concerns related to antibiotic overuse. The misuse of antibiotics not only contributes to antibiotic resistance but may also impact long-term health outcomes, particularly respiratory diseases like asthma. Emerging evidence suggests that early antibiotic exposure may disrupt gut microbiota, altering immune responses and increasing the risk of asthma development. A systematic review of twenty-seven studies identified a significant correlation between antibiotic use in infancy and subsequent asthma diagnoses. However, there remains a need for further research to delineate the extent …

Maternal Health Crisis: Implicit Bias/Cultural Humility Education For Perinatal Nurses, Carmen Rezak
Maternal Health Crisis: Implicit Bias/Cultural Humility Education For Perinatal Nurses, Carmen Rezak
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Abstract
Today, perinatal nurses are challenged to provide equitable care for a very diverse and
high-risk pregnant/postpartum patient population. Pregnant women of color are mistrustful of
the health care system and concerned about their care and risks when admitted to the hospital for
fear that they are not listened to or treated with the same respect and intent as their white patient
counterparts. Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., in a 1966 speech, made in connection with the
Medical Committee for Human rights stated, “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is
the most shocking and inhumane.” Nurses play …

Schultz-Werth Award Papers
Currently in the United States, 844 colleges are accredited for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program (American Association of College of Nursing, 2023). Each year, over 155,000 newly graduated registered nurses enter the hospital and clinical setting (Bradley, 2021). Many factors, including cost, time, familiarity with the electronic medical record and unit, the ability to provide patient-centered care, as well as competence with hands-on skills, can impact how much time the novice-level nurse receives for orientation on the floor. Nursing programs not only play a key role in preparing students for the NCLEX but also introduce them to …

Perception Of Students As Partners In Learning Among Students And Faculty Members Of Sonam Karachi, Pakistan, Anum Shiraz Gujrati
PhD-HS 2024
Background: Students as Partners (SaP) has emerged as a student-centred approach where students are taken as active partners in determining learning outcomes and pedagogies rather than being merely passive learners and consumers in Higher Education (HE). It shifts the focus from the teacher-centred to the student learning environment and from a product to process-orientated outcomes. There is still a need to explore the perception of students as partners in HE among undergraduate and graduate nursing students and faculty members.
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to explore the perception of students and faculty members regarding students as partners in …

Concept Of Health-Related Quality Of Life Among People With Heart Failure In Karachi, Pakistan, Anny Ashiq Ali
PhD-HS 2024
Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular diseases, are a leading cause of global mortality. The mortality rate for cardiovascular diseases is on the rise, with 80 % to 86 % of fatalities, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, including Pakistan. Among NCDs, heart failure (HF) is a condition for which there is no cure, and patients rely on supportive treatments to maintain their quality of life. HF not only affects physical well-being but also has far-reaching consequences on the emotional, social, and cognitive aspects of life. In the context of Pakistan, where unique healthcare, sociocultural, and economic factors prevail, the …
