The Effects Of Nonnutritive Sucking On The Behavior Of Premature Infants, Jean Newbold

This quasi experimental study explored the effects of nonnutritive sucking opportunities on the premature's behavioral habituation, orientation and state control using the Mann-Whitney U-Test. The problem was to determine if experimental infants receiving regular nonnutritive sucking opportunities would show a difference in behavior when compared to a control group.

The sample was a purposive convenience sample of 15 infants. All infants were between the conceptual age of 28-34 weeks and were considered "stable" infants. Neurological examinations, consisting of selected segments of the Brazelton Newborn Behavioral Assessment Scale (BNBAS), were performed on all infants on the day of entry into the …

The term confusion is often used as a nursing diagnosis. Yet, there is no consistent definition that indicates a systematic process is used in the labeling of elderly patients as confused. The research question for this descriptive association study was: "To what extent are selected characteristics utilized among nursing home staff in the labeling of elderly as confused?"

1. To describe to what extent the Clinical Enrichment Rotation facilitated the perceived ease of transition from the role of the student to the role of Registered Nurse.
2. To determine to what extent the Clinical Enrichment Rotation affected the graduate's perceived ability to perform selected nursing functions indicative of the role of a Registered Nurse.
3. To determine to what extent students perceived the objectives of the Clinical Enrichment Rotation in an associate degree program were accomplished. The above objectives reflect the order in which each objective will be analyzed.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of training on the patient handling methods of nursing personnel. The study sought (1) to determine the effect of three class variables (Group, Session and Task) on behavioral performance, (2) to assess the influence of twelve organismic variables on behavioral performance, and (3) to determine the relationship between written exam scores and trainee behavioral performance.

Test and control groups were comprised of twelve and twenty-eight subjects, respectively. Behavioral performance in four specified tasks was determined via direct observation of individual subjects by trained observers using specific, dichotomously-measured behavioral criteria. Performance …

Pretest and posttest questionnaires were designed and administered to a nonrandom sample of 29 senior nursing students, enrolled in a directed studies experience at a selected institution. The questionnaires gathered data which, through testing with the Analysis of Variance, attempted to predict the effects of selected aspects of a directed studies experience on nursing students' perceived ability to complete nursing behaviors. This descriptive study was one component of a research project conducted at a large medical center in the midwest. The purpose of this study was to identify common characteristics and perceived concerns, with their relationships, of a population of parents who had received a volunteer parents supporting parents (P.S.P.) service. This service was offered to new parents in an attempt to increase the potential for positive parenting.

Common characteristics found in this group of P.S.P. recipients were: married, first baby, mid-twenties in age, mentally and physically healthy with positive feelings about their own parents, their labor and delivery, and this …

A professional profile questionnaire and a case study questionnaire depicting a child with delayed development was mailed to 200 nurses of the Michigan Nurses Association Division of Maternal and Child Health. Of the 60 respondents, 27 (45.8%) indicated a diagnosis in the category of altered development as primary diagnosis for the child and 50 (83.3%) indicated a diagnosis in this category as either primary or secondary diagnosis for the child.

The Relationship Between Social Support, Coping Style, And Emotional Status Among Individuals With Cancer, Undergoing Chemotherapy, Dina I. Hamati

A cross section descriptive study was conducted to examine the relationship between social support, coping style, and emotional status among individuals with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. A questionnaire schedule consisting of social support, coping style, and emotional status was administered to subjects during their office visits to an oncologist. No significant relationships were found between social support, coping style, and emotional status. A significant correlation was found between those patients who had more affection, affirmation, and aid from their support system and the amount of guilt experienced by those patients (p = .05).
