The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine the effects of reminiscence therapy on social interaction in a group of institutionalized elders. The researcher hypothesized that there would be no significant differences over time in social interactions as institutionalized elders participated in a reminiscence group. The sample was comprised of three elderly females in a nursing home in North Mississippi. The subjects were observed for behaviors indicating interaction during eight sessions. These sessions were conducted for 3 weeks and each one lasted approximately one hour. A trained observer recorded observations using the Social Interaction Tool. The data were submitted …

The purposes of this study. were: to explore job-related perceptions of stress in a group of military critical care nurses; and to determine if differences in anxiety and stress levels existed between nurses working in coronary care (CCCU) and medical/surgical intensive care (ICU) settings using the State/Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Questionnaire of Stressful Factors in Intensive Care. From a population of former clients of the diabetic unit at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, a sample of 21 individuals w e r e g i v e n the Assessment of Educational Needs of the Diabetic Patient Questionnaire. Age of subjects ranged from 25 to 83 years with a mean of 51.5 years. There were 13 (62%) males and 8 (38%) females. Educational levels varied from 5 to 16 years with a mean of 10 years. This study was descriptive in nature, designed to identify differences in coping strategies of spouses of Alzheimer patients who are cared for at home . Data were collected using the Chronicity Impact and Coping Instrument: Spouse Questionnaire. The sample consisted of 14 subjects (3 males and 11 females) who met the criteria for the study. Subjects ranged in age from 60 to 86 years with an average age of 68.9 years. One Black and 13 Caucasians participated. To test the hypothesis, data were analyzed using percentiles. The null hypothesis stated there would be no significant difference at the .05 level of significance between depressed elders who participated in touch therapy and elders who did not participate in touch therapy. Data were collected from 10 elders, age 65 or older, who were residents of two nursing homes in Northeast Mississippi. The researcher hypothesized that there would be no significant difference between depression prior to and following plush animal therapy. Data were collected preand p o s t - p l u s h animal therapy using the Beck Depression Inventory. There were four subjects who each selected a plush animal, kept it with them for 5 weeks, and were then retested using the Beck Depression Inventory. This descriptive study focused on the bureaucratic, professional, and service role conceptions of nurses. It was hypothesized that there are significant differences in the ideal and actual perceptions of these role orientations among baccalaureate nursing students, their nursing faculty, and their clinical nurse mentors. Touch--both touching another and being touched--is a primary form of communication. By old age, both the need and the desire for specific amounts and kinds of touching are well established for the individual. The present study was designed to obtain information about what elderly women in nursing and retirement homes report to be liked and disliked types of touching. Nurse educators and nursing service administrators have different expectations for the baccalaureate graduate nurse. The difference in expectations has made the transition from student to practitioner difficult for the new graduate.

The purpose of this study was to identify the ideal and real expectations regarding entry level performance as perceived by nurses who graduated in 1985 from 17 of 31 baccalaureate programs represented in the Consensus on Entry project. The ideal and real expectations of the graduates were compared to the nurse educators' and the nursing service administrators' results from the consensus on Entry project.

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences between the unique learning needs of expectant parents and those perceived by childbirth educators. A purposive sample of 40 expectant parents and ten childbirth educators completed the Expectant Parents Learning Needs Tool (EPLNT) and a demographic inventory developed by the researcher. Subjects were classified into five groups based on their status as first-time fathers, repeat fathers, first-time mothers, repeat mothers, and childbirth educators. The capacity of parents to act as health educators in the home is proposed as a functional piece of Orem's dependent care agency construct. A new data collection instrument, the Health Education Questionnaire, was developed to explore the conceptual dimensions of an intellectual pre-production phase of health action-taking. Parents' self-reported knowledge and beliefs regarding selected health topics, as well as their perceptions of ego strength and valuing health were proposed as independent factors in dependent care agency related to health education in the home.
