Oral Assessment Guide, June Eilers, Ann Berger

Guides and Handouts: College of Nursing

The Oral Assessment Guide (OAG) can be used by the clinician to evaluate changes in the oral cavity. The OAG is comprised of eight categories of mucositis assessment of the mouth on a scale of 1 to 3, with “1” indicating normal and “3” indicating breakdown or loss of function. The OAG has been validated and is reliable in the current published format. Permission is granted for use in the current format. Any modifications will require new testing for validity and reliability. The OAG has been widely used in cancer and other populations and published in professional journals and books.

The purpose of this study was to explore and describe adolescents' perception of stress during antepartal hospitalization. The research questions answered in this study were: 1. What are the perceived stressors of hospitalized antepartum adolescents? 2. Are there differences in the perceived stressors among early, middle, and late adolescents?

The study was conducted in a teaching hospital in the southeastern United States. A convenience sample of 14 adolescents participated in this study. The ages of the subjects ranged from 14 to 19 years old, with the majority of the subjects 16-19 years old. The subjects were all unmarried and had …

This investigation determined the difference in the incidence of spinal headache in 33 patients placed in 30 degrees (°) head-up position versus 33 patients who remained flat for four hours following the administration of spinal anesthesia. An experimental design was used. The two randomly assigned groups presented for elective postpartum tubal ligation under spinal anesthesia. Group A was placed flat and group B had the head of their beds elevated 30° postoperatively. Strict procedural protocol was adhered to prior to and during the administration of the spinal anesthetic. The Effect Of Pre-Emergence Gastric Aspiration On Postoperative Nausea And Vomiting Following Abdominal Surgery, Marc Alan Friedberg

An investigation was undertaken to determine the effect of pre-emergence gastric aspiration on the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting in abdominal surgery patients. Thirty female ASA I and ASA II patients were randomly assigned to either a control group (n = 16) or a treatment group (n = 14). Those patients in the treatment group received pre-emergence gastric aspiration with a suction catheter; those patients in the control group did not. The incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting was determined at various time intervals. Data were analyzed using Student's t test and the Chi-square statistic. Results indicated that there …

This study examines the development of nursing as a vocation, in the early twentieth century, within the context of a growing southern city and an evolving health care system. Nursing advanced from a domestic service to a recognized vocation during this era. An extensive survey of historical and nursing literature revealed few studies which focus on nursing and health care in an urban context. Those studies identified gave only brief glimpses of nurses and focus on northern cities. This investigation aims to add a southern chapter to the history of nursing and health care in urban settings.

This was a correlational study designed to investigate the relationship of stress and menstrual symptomatology in college-age women. The null hypothesis stated there would be no significant correlation between stress levels and menstrual symptomatology in women attending college. Data were collected from 90 subjects between the ages of 18 and 40 years who were attending college and who currently experience menses. All of the subjects were given the Menstrual Distress Questionnaire, Form C (MDQ) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Form Y-1 (STAX). This research study was a quasi-experimental one designed to investigate the effects of touch on responsive behaviors of confused elderly nursing home residents. This study is based on Neuman's Systems Model of Nursing and examines the effects of touch as a means of communication between the confused elderly person and the environment. The population included all confused elderly residents in a nursing home in the southeastern region of the United States. This study was undertaken to determine the degree of relationship in perceptions held by three health care administrative groups between the desirable and actual role functions of the hospital nursing service administrator. This descriptive study surveyed hospital Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), and Nursing Service Administrators (NSAs) in 100 randomly selected general hospitals, and chairpersons of graduate programs in nursing service administration. Summary

Chapter three described the methodology for the study of the effect of peer counseling therapy sessions on the level of self-esteem of the substance abuse student. The Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale will be used to collect data from two groups of substance abuse adolescent students. One group consists of substance abuse adolescents participating in peer counseling therapy sessions. Treatment of the data will include descriptive statistics for both demographic and study variables, and the independent T-tests between the groups' total raw subscale scores and independent T-test and chi-square tests on demographic variables.
