Objective: To assess the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and TPB with functional ability to explain intention and self-reported physical activity (PA) behavior of older adults.
Methods: A survey was mailed to 2056 retirees from a large Midwestern university.
Results: Structural equation modeling revealed that the TPB plus functional ability explained an additional 11% variance than the TPB alone in older adult PA and functional ability was the best predictor of PA (beta = .53, P< .05).
Conclusions: Functional ability appears to be an important predictor of PA behavior and should be included when designing PA programs for older adults.

A Composite Cognition Instrument For Nursing Care Of Combat Casualties, Patricia Frohock Hanes Phd, Msn, Maed, Rn
Dissertations
In the course of caring for military and civilian combat casualties, military nurses must make rapid, accurate decisions. When developing methods to teach nurses essential content for combat casualty care, it is important to understand the cognitive and learning processes involved in acquiring that knowledge. Measures to examine how military nurses think and learn have significance, especially when applied to the high-stress, high-stakes practice arena of combat causality care. Use of these measures in evaluating educational strategies will help answer the need for better deployment readiness for military nurses. The purpose of this study is to develop an instrument to …

Nursing Theory And Knowledge Development: A Descriptive Review Of Doctoral Dissertations, 2000–2004, Hila Spear
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Within the profession of nursing, nursing theory, conceptual models, and knowledge development continue to be points of discussion and debate. Some suggest that nursing research must either test or develop nursing theory, whereas others believe that research germane to practice can legitimately incorporate what is commonly referred to as borrowed theory. This descriptive analysis of nursing doctoral dissertations (N = 207) conducted from 2000 to 2004 focused primarily on the inclusion or exclusion of nursing theories. Almost half (45.4%) of the dissertations studied theories from fields other than nursing, 27.1% of the researchers studied nursing theories, and 27.5% of the …

Resiliency In Adolescent College Students, Nancy Ahern
Resiliency In Adolescent College Students, Nancy Ahern
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The construct of resilience has gained considerable attention over the last four decades since researchers observed that children and youth could cope and adapt in spite of adversity. Resilience involves a dynamic process involving an interaction between both risk and protective processes, internal and external to the individual, that can modify the effects of an adverse life event. Adolescence is considered to be a period of vulnerability for most individuals as they often partake in high risk behaviors. Further, those individuals who are in their early college years are faced with the developmental challenges of this life phase which can …

Diabetes Self-Management In The Migrant Latino Population, Dawn Weiler, Janice D. Crist
Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article will present an in-depth exploration and synthesis of current literature that informs nursing knowledge of diabetes self-management for the migrant Latino population. Extensive research in diabetes care has been conducted, however, there is a significant knowledge gap related to the factors that influence the achievement of glycemic control and self-management practices of the Latino population. Based on well-documented disparities in complications and health outcomes among Latinos when compared with White Americans, there is sufficient evidence to question whether traditional White beliefs about self-management are successful or appropriate for the Latino population in general and migrants specifically. Traditional models …

Office Nurse Educators: Improving Diabetes Self-Management For The Latino Population In The Clinic Setting, Dawn Weiler, Laura Tirrell
Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations
Diabetes patients who understand their disease and how to manage it can achieve a lower complication rate. The American Diabetes Association recommends that patients receive self-management education and that patients' skills and knowledge be reassessed annually. The Healthy People 2010 objectives include a goal of at least 60% of diabetes patients receiving diabetes education. However, to date overall, far fewer (20%–50%) obtain comprehensive diabetes education and skills development to effectively implement self-management techniques. Low-income Latino patients generally fare even worse. This article describes a successful method to address this problem: the development and evaluation of an in-house diabetes education program, …
