Isolation Of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Youth: A Dimensional Concept Analysis, Michael Johnson, Elaine Amella
Interdisciplinary Research Scholarship Day
Present the findings of a dimensional concept analysis of isolation within the context of LGBT youth. LGBT youth are at greater risk for negative health outcomes as compared to heterosexual youth, including depression, anxiety, suicide, substance abuse, and HIV/AIDS. Some studies suggest LGBT feeling and being isolated is related to some negative health outcomes. Other research reveals a relationship between isolation and negative health

Interdisciplinary Research Scholarship Day
The purpose of this study was to determine the energy cost, beyond resting metabolic rate (RMR), of playing select games on the Nintendo Wii for 30 contiguous minutes. Physically interactive games (i.e. Basic Run and Basic Step) increase energy expenditure above resting values compared to a sedentary game (Tanks!) and therefore may help individual’s become more active. Furthermore, Basic Run and Basic Step elicited MET values of 3.9 and 3.2, respectively, which is considered moderate-intensity exercise and could be used to meet daily recommendations for physical activity.

Enhancing Access To Cultural Health Assessment Instruments For Refugees In Idaho, Samantha Fundingsland
College of Health Sciences Poster Presentations
Statement of the problem: Boise, Idaho is one of 16 relocation centers in the United States for refugees from all over the world. The number of Boise refugees from 2001-2011 totaled 5,431 with more than 30 countries represented (Idaho Office for Refugees, 2013). Refugees are fleeing persecution on basis of race, religion, nationality, and social groups and generally cannot protect themselves from their own countries. The process of resettlement is stressful and can impact physical and mental health. Upon entering the United States refugees are required to undergo a medical examination, which initially introduces them to the healthcare system. Refugees …

Food Label Literacy And Healthy Food And Exercise Promotion Among Pacific Islander Caregivers, Dr. Jane Lassetter
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Originally, I planned to collect the data in Tonga and Utah. The Tongan Ministry of Health never replied to the proposal I submitted for their review. Therefore, spring and summer 2011, I modified the study, and students and I collected data from 364 Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) participants in two islands of Hawaii at a preschool and grocery stores and in Utah at NHPI events. Our research questions were the following:

Mentoring Student Research Teams In Providing Appropriate Interventions For Families Raising Children/Adolescents With Diabetes, Dr. Donna Freeborn
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This intervention project consisted of four workshops for children/adolescents with type 1 diabetes held over a four month period in Winter/Spring 2011 and then another series of workshops for children/adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1DM), parents of these children, and siblings held over four months in Fall 2011. Evaluations and feedback from participants have been positive and underscore the need to continue these workshops on an ongoing basis. Parental workshops were conducted by Christina Yazzie, a graduate student, who presented a poster on the intervention at the Western Institute of Nursing Conference in April, 2012. Workshops for the children with …

Rural School Employees' Awareness And Perceptions Of Adult Vaccinations: A District-Wide Study, Eli Gary Thornton
Rural School Employees' Awareness And Perceptions Of Adult Vaccinations: A District-Wide Study, Eli Gary Thornton
Theses and Dissertations
As key members of the school environment, it is important for school employees to be vaccinated. Employees are in direct contact with children in close quarters for long periods of time and such an environment can easily serve as an outbreak center for vaccine-preventable communicable diseases such as measles. Despite the fact that most school employees believe vaccines are safe and effective and many school employees report they are up-to-date with their vaccines, a closer examination reveals discrepancy between belief and behavior. As a vaccine advocate, the school nurse can be influential in providing adult vaccination education for school employees, …

Explaining Political Activeness And Attitudes Toward Unionization Among Nurses In The United States., Crystal L. Lesmeister
Political Science Theses and Capstones
There is no question; nurses play a key role in healthcare. Nurses provide direct care, coordinate health promotion activities, educate, and provide support and advocacy to patients. Today, there are over two million registered nurses in the United States. My research aims to determine the variables that influence some nurses to be more politically active and more engaged in unionization than their counterparts. I analyze The National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses 2004 looking at a variety of potential explanations for union participation. Findings show a strong regional variation in the percentage of unionization, however, some of the conventional explanations …

Since 2006 there has been universal acceptance in both developing and industrialized societies that HIV treatment and related services, including more effective programs, be available to all citizens. However, as a result of the worldwide recession and shifting health priorities, progress toward these goals has stalled. While the epidemic continues to grow (approximately 34 million globally, with 2.7 million new cases in 2010), fewer resources are dedicated to treatment and prevention than previously, and clinical staffs, especially nurses are challenged by more patient care responsibilities. This paper focuses on the relationships of HIV/AIDS care, coping strategies and work environmental stress …

Same-Day Discharge Of Transradial Elective Coronary Intervention, Diane Rydzy Rn, Stuart Zarich
Posters
Transradial coronary interventions appear to be increasing in all cardiac catheterization laboratories across the country. The benefits of this approach have become apparent with fewer bleeding complications, faster recovery time and most of all, improved patient satisfaction. These benefits indirectly increase patient throughput and decrease costs due to more efficient resource utilization. With increased financial constraints transradial coronary procedures are also a benefit in cost reductions.
