Objective
To examine the frequency of leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) in relation to depressive symptoms in a nationally representative sample of African American (AA) women and AA men with guidance by Stokols' Social Ecological Framework.
Method
A secondary analysis of AA women (n = 1811) and AA men (n = 1038) was performed on the National Survey of American Life, where a four stage national area probability sampling was conducted. Interviews were conducted 2001–2003. Clinically depressed AA were excluded from the current study. LTPA was measured by self-report frequency (never, rarely, sometimes, often) of participation in sports/exercise. Depressive symptoms were …
Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder At A Pediatric Hospital: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Norah L. Johnson, Dana Rodriguez
Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder At A Pediatric Hospital: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Norah L. Johnson, Dana Rodriguez
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
This review of literature describes the behaviors of hospitalized children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that health care providers find challenging. It also identifies strategies used to address these challenging behaviors. The systematic review of literature identified 34 articles from databases on health care of challenging behaviors of children with ASD. The review identified four categories of challenging behaviors (non-compliance, hyperactivity, sensory defensiveness, self-injury) and several strategies for reducing these behaviors. Partnering with parents to develop strategies is important for children with ASD to deliver timely and safe care.

Cultural Aspects Of Latino Early Childhood Obesity, Lauren Clark, Susan L. Johnson, Mary E. O'Connor, Jane H. Lassetter
Cultural Aspects Of Latino Early Childhood Obesity, Lauren Clark, Susan L. Johnson, Mary E. O'Connor, Jane H. Lassetter
Faculty Publications
The problem of Latino childhood obesity is well known, and experts agree that the sooner it is addressed in a child’s life, the better. Strong evidence from nationwide studies suggests that obesity begins in infancy for Mexican Americans. National data demonstrate the dramatic increase in weight-for-recumbent length above the 95th percentile (using the NCHS growth chart) among Mexican American children between National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) (Ogden et al., 2006). High rates of childhood obesity affect the long-term health potential of children, since childhood obesity tracks into …

Move Montana: An Exercise Program For Children, Adolescents, And Their Families, Deanna Lynn Babb
Dissertations
Despite advances in medical science, the prevalence of obesity in the US has more than doubled in the last three decades, to over 72 million people (CDC, 2009). The purpose of this project was to pilot an exercise program that would increase physical activity in a group of adolescents and one of their parents or guardians. A convenient sample of 10 adults and eight adolescents returned surveys and exercised through the entire eight weeks (N = 18). Ten of the 18 participants (56%), six parents and four adolescents, reported increased frequency of exercise each week throughout the eight week period. …
Reducing Heart Failure In An Era Of Reform, Sandra M. Kurpela
Reducing Heart Failure In An Era Of Reform, Sandra M. Kurpela
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Heart failure (HF) affects an estimated 5 million Americans, with 550,000 new patients diagnosed yearly (American Heart Association, 2004). Despite advancements, readmissions for HF remain high. Management is especially important due to recent legislation that penalizes hospitals with excessive readmissions. The purpose of this evidence-based project (EBP) was to determine if a chronic disease HF management program with advance practice nurse, home care, and telehealth would affect hospital readmission 4 weeks post-discharge. Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory and the Iowa Model guided this system change. The project used a longitudinal experimental pre- and post-test design with convenience sample from two …

Nursing Student's Perceptions Of Cultural Competency., Caitlin Malcolm
Undergraduate Honors Theses
As the United States population becomes more culturally diverse, it has become a priority for health care professionals to competently provide culturally sensitive care. Cultural competency is required in baccalaureate (BSN) programs, mandated by collegiate nursing accrediting agencies. Although BSN programs have integrated cultural competency education into their core curricula, little data has been collected evaluating outcomes and effectiveness. Using a 36 question survey, students in all levels of a selected BSN program were asked questions regarding cultural competency and attitudes towards cultural care. The ANOVA and a Tukey Kramer analyses were performed with an alpha coefficient of 0.05 and …

The Lived Experience Of African American Nurses Who Attended Predominantly White University Baccalaureate Programs: Characteristics Of Success And Resilience, Carmen A. Stokes
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This qualitative dissertation explores the lived experiences of successful African-American nurses who attended baccalaureate programs at predominantly White universities (PWUs). Only 5.4% of the national registered nurse workforce is identified as African American; yet African-American citizens account for approximately 12.9% of the United States' population, and 24% of all enrollments in nursing programs nationwide is composed of African-American students. Past nursing education research has almost exclusively focused on the deficits of African-American students. This dissertation study focuses on a gap in the literature because it addresses the strengths and attributes of those African-American students who succeed, thereby contributing to an …

Warfarin has been a mainstay of therapy for treatment and prevention of venous thromboembolic disease (VTED) and prevention of stroke and systemic embolism for over 50 years. Recent FDA approval of several novel oral anticoagulants has offered more extensive treatment options for management of these disease states.
The availability of the novel anticoagulants offers an attractive alternative to warfarin therapy for patients due to their convenience of use. In comparison to warfarin, dabigatran, rivaroxaban and apixaban offer: - a fixed dosage regimen
- a relatively small potential drug interaction profile
- minimal laboratory monitoring
- little to no dietary restrictions. …

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Toilet training (TT) is a necessary developmental task that all healthy children must ultimately achieve. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2001) noticed that E. coli can be spread to playmates by toddlers who are not toilet trained. Studies showed parental participation in the TT process is crucial and parental readiness to pledge to TT is an important step for training. In Thailand, very few studies were conducted about TT a toddler, and all of the studies were descriptive. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to determine the effectiveness of a parental education intervention about TT, …

Interprofessional Roles Shoulder Dystocia: Maximizing Safety In Community Hospitals, Elizabeth Yznaga
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Prompted by evidence that clinical simulations improve patient safety, team simulations are emerging in hospital settings. Accrediting organizations such as the U.S. Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (Joint Commission, 2004, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, 2002) have recommend simulation of obstetrical emergencies, including shoulder dystocia for hospital teams. National patient safety mandates for simulation training of critical events have not been available to small, rural hospitals because of lack of talent and equipment, creating a gap in resources. Other than demonstrations by manikin companies, this author has currently been …
