Student Perception Of How Simulation Applies To Clinical Experience, Brooke Alleger, Dr. Debra Wing Jun 2013

Student Perception Of How Simulation Applies To Clinical Experience, Brooke Alleger, Dr. Debra Wing

Journal of Undergraduate Research

For students in the nursing program at Brigham Young University, lab time in the Nursing Learning Center in the basement of the Spencer W. Kimball Tower is a regular part of the classroom experience. In this lab, nursing skills such as assessments, starting IVs, inserting catheters and cleaning wounds are taught and practiced. Once basic skill sets are taught, students are challenged with real-life scenarios requiring them to think critically and practice a subset of learned skills on a mannequin during simulation labs.

Developing An Instrument To Assess Immunization Requirements Among Utah Health Care Workers In The Outpatient Setting, Nathan Wiley, Dr. Beth Luthy

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The health care environment is ideal for the spread of immunization-preventable and communicable diseases (Goldstein, Kincade, Gamble, & Bearman, 2004). Communicable diseases, such as pertussis, are highly contagious and easily transmitted by health care workers (HCWs) to at-risk patients (CDC, 1997; Sandora, Gidengil, & Lee, 2008). Pediatric patients, especially those under 5 years of age, are especially vulnerable to immunization-preventable diseases since they have not yet completed all immunizations in a given series. Since 2006, the CDC has recommended the cocoon immunization strategy, a program that aims to protect newborns from pertussis by immunizing caregivers of the infant (TCH, 2010). …

Nursing Education: The Role Of Debriefing For Nursing Students’ First Clinical Experience With Death, Laura Gilpin, Dr. Barabar Heise

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Death, particularly the unexpected death of a patient, is an emotionally charged, highstress situation for any nurse. Nursing students encounter scenarios involving death and dying in simulation laboratories, as well as in the clinical setting. It is essential a nurse learns how to process and cope with his or her emotions regarding the death of a patient since it may occur frequently during his or her career. If a nurse cannot cope with these emotions it could lead to burn out and damage to overall emotional health.

How Incarceration Affects Maternal Identify Of Female Inmates, Ashlee Manwaring, Dr. Janelle Macintosh Jun 2013

How Incarceration Affects Maternal Identify Of Female Inmates, Ashlee Manwaring, Dr. Janelle Macintosh

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I proposed an ORCA with Janelle Macintosh, RN, PhD, last fall, and was awarded the grant in February. Our original idea was to investigate how incarceration affects maternal identify of female inmates. This was closely related to Dr. Macintosh’s original dissertation proposal and completed dissertation. However, we were not able to successfully complete the required IRB for the Department of Corrections. We determined a change in population would probably be the best course of action. Our goal was to do the same research on a different population.

Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works

The type of gift bags given to new mothers at the time of discharge from the hospital can influence their confidence in breastfeeding. Most hospitals in the US continue to distribute commercial gift bags containing formula samples despite the reported negative influence of commercial bags on the duration of breastfeeding. This study compared breastfeeding outcomes in women receiving three different kinds of gift bags at discharge. A prospective intervention study was conducted during the 2009-2010 in New Jersey. Three breastfeeding cohorts were recruited and assigned to three groups: COMMERCIAL received discharge bags containing formula samples, BF-INFO received breastfeeding information and …

The Role Of Transcendence In A Holistic View Of Successful Aging : A Concept Analysis And Model Of Transcendence In Maturation And Aging., Valerie Lander Mccarthy, Amanda Bockweg

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Although successful aging is most often defined by the absence of disease and disability, older adults consistently report aging successfully even in the presence of chronic illness and functional limitations. A more holistic way of looking at old age suggests transcendence may be an important missing criterion for successful aging.

AIM: Transcendence, a late life developmental process, appears to have a profound effect within the spiritual domain, but is an abstract, complex and unfamiliar concept. A clear understanding of the meaning of transcendence is necessary to explore the concept’s usefulness as a potential basis for future interventions to increase …

Evaluating Tablet Technology In An Undergraduate Nursing Program, Beth Ann Swan, Kellie Smith, Anthony J. Frisby, Kathryn Shaffer, Mary Hanson-Zalot, Julie Becker

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

With the introduction of tablet technology, faculty began asking questions about when, where, and how tables might enhance curriculum opportunities for student learning and faculty teaching strategies beyond their use as personal digital devices and smartphones (Swan, Smith, Frisby, Shaffer, & Hason-Zalot). Personal digital devices (PDDs), including smartphones, had been used by nursing students for the past five years. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how tablet technology affected student and faculty teaching-learning processes and outcomes in an accelerated, pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing program.
