Social Script Ipad Application Versus Usual Care Before Undergoing Medical Imaging: Two Case Studies Of Children With Autism, Norah L. Johnson, Octavia Alexis Bree
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are neurodevelopmental disorders of socialization, communication, and repetitive behaviors. Children with ASD have underlying anxiety leading to challenging behaviors in unfamiliar situations. The anxiety impacts timely completion of an imaging procedure. The purpose of the case study was to describe the process of the social script intervention delivered using the iPad application on parent and child anxiety, child behaviors, and imaging procedure length between two parent and child dyads. The case study of two parent-child dyads demonstrated the process for comparing the social script intervention iPad app for preparing for imaging versus usual care. Parent anxiety …
Comparison Of Abstinence And Coital Frequency Between 2 Natural Methods Of Family Planning, Richard J. Fehring, Mary Schneider
Comparison Of Abstinence And Coital Frequency Between 2 Natural Methods Of Family Planning, Richard J. Fehring, Mary Schneider
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Introduction
The length of periodic abstinence, due to overestimation of the fertile phase of the menstrual cycle, is often a cause for dissatisfaction, discontinuation, and user error with natural family planning (NFP) methods. The objective of this research was to compare the length of required abstinence (ie, estimated fertility) and coital frequency between 2 NFP methods.
Methods
This was an analysis of data from a 12-month prospective comparison study in which participants were randomized into either an electronic hormonal fertility monitor (EHFM) group or a cervical mucus monitoring (CMM) group—both of which included a fertility algorithm as a double check …

“Releasing A Lot Of Poisons From My Mind”: Patients' Delusional Memories Of Intensive Care, Jill L. Guttormson
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Objectives
To describe intensive care unit (ICU) patients' delusional memories and interpretations of those memories.
Background
Delusional memories of the ICU are distressing for patients and may impact psychological recovery.
Methods
This is a secondary analysis from a study of mechanically ventilated patients' recall in relation to sedation. Subjects, recruited from one medical-surgical ICU, participated in structured interviews after extubation.
Results
Subjects (n = 35) with a mean age of 66 (SD 12.9) and on the ventilator a median of 4.5 days provided detailed descriptions of delusional memories of being shackled, caged, strangled, or being in a foreign country. …

Aim
This study aimed to compare rural and urban nurse residency programme participants’ personal and job characteristics and perceptions of decision-making, job satisfaction, job stress, nursing performance and organisational commitment over time.
Background
Nurse residency programmes are an evolving strategy to foster transition to practice for new nurses. However, there are limited data available for programme outcomes particularly for rural nurses.
Method
A longitudinal design sampled 382 urban and 86 rural newly licensed hospital nurses during a 12-month nurse residency programme. Data were collected at the start of the programme, at 6 months and the end of the programme.

Prevention Of Hiv Mother-To-Child-Transmission In Sub-Saharan Africa, Sidik Abdul-Mumuni
Prevention Of Hiv Mother-To-Child-Transmission In Sub-Saharan Africa, Sidik Abdul-Mumuni
Master's Projects and Capstones
The transmission of HIV infection from an HIV-positive mother to her child during labor, pregnancy, breastfeeding or delivery is termed as mother-to-child HIV transmission (WHO, 2013 report on HIV). A range of 15-45% infection transmissions are possible when no intervention strategies are put into place. Globally, goals and initiatives have been set to combat this issue as well as speeding up the interventions and achieve possible transmission rates of levels less than 5% and total elimination of new infant HIV infections by 2015 (WHO, 2013 report on HIV). In 2011, 57% of pregnant women living with HIV in low and …

Psychometric Validation Of The Family Nurse Caring Belief Scale In A Neonatal Nursing Population, Eileen P. Magri
Psychometric Validation Of The Family Nurse Caring Belief Scale In A Neonatal Nursing Population, Eileen P. Magri
Theses & Dissertations
Statement of the Problem Many studies have explored the concept of family-centered care (FCC) as the framework in which the nurse recognizes and incorporates the family into the care of the patient. Implementation of FCC in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has not been clearly or consistently described in the literature and is often included with Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU). The Family Nurse Caring Belief Scale (FNCBS) was developed to measure nurses’ beliefs regarding provision of family-sensitive care to families in crisis that incorporate concepts important to care for a family unit. Initial psychometric evaluation of the FNCBS …
Designing The Plane While Flying It: A Case Study On Nursing Faculty Development During Academic Electronic Health Records Integration In A Small Liberal Arts College, Karen Elizabeth Maxwell
Designing The Plane While Flying It: A Case Study On Nursing Faculty Development During Academic Electronic Health Records Integration In A Small Liberal Arts College, Karen Elizabeth Maxwell
Dissertations and Theses
The expectation of graduating nurses today is to be knowledgeable and responsive to rapidly changing technology in the health care environment. Although federal mandates, Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendations, and nursing program accreditation initiatives are pushing an "informatics" healthcare agenda by promoting the implementation of electronic health record (EHR) systems by 2014 in all healthcare facilities, very few US nursing schools provide students with access and training in, EHR systems. In addition, nursing faculty may not have a clear understanding of healthcare informatics; the use of information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision-making. Nursing education …
Increasing Patients’ Knowledge In Transmission Of Bacterial Vaginosis And Its Treatment Regimens, Debra Garner
Increasing Patients’ Knowledge In Transmission Of Bacterial Vaginosis And Its Treatment Regimens, Debra Garner
Dissertations
Research has shown bacterial vaginosis to be one of the most common vaginal disorders in women of child bearing age (Chen, Tian, & Beigi, 2009; Centers for Disease Control, 2012; Menard, 2011). Each year many women are seen by their gynecologist, sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinics, and emergency rooms (ER) for complaints of having malodorous discharge (Bradshaw, et al., 2005). Several STI’s and adverse pregnancy outcomes have been attributed to women having bacterial vaginosis (Bradshaw, et al, 2005; Chen, et al.2009; Elkins, & Mayeaux, 2010). Women are predisposed to bacterial vaginosis by the use of wearing non cotton underwear, douching, …
Provider Perception Of Patient Satisfaction If Antibiotics Are Not Given For Upper Respiratory Infection, Robyn Doniel Drake
Provider Perception Of Patient Satisfaction If Antibiotics Are Not Given For Upper Respiratory Infection, Robyn Doniel Drake
Dissertations
The purpose of this project was to assess if advanced practice nurse practitioners perceived patient satisfaction of patients seen in Metropolitan Retail Clinics was improved after educational materials were given to explain when antibiotics work. I hypothesized that provider perception of patient satisfaction would decrease unnecessary prescribing of antibiotics after providing patient education? This project used questionnaires to collect data from control and intervention groups to demonstrate a gain in provider perception if patient satisfaction after education was given in the intervention group. The results of this project did not reveal to the primary investigator what was originally assumed, that …
Best Practices In High Fidelity Patient Simulation To Enhance Higher Order Thinking Skills, Kathryn S. Mock
Best Practices In High Fidelity Patient Simulation To Enhance Higher Order Thinking Skills, Kathryn S. Mock
Theses and Dissertations
Undergraduate nursing education has begun to use very expensive and time intensive high fidelity simulation activities without making full use of the ability to build higher order thinking skills in students. Current research in high fidelity patient simulation has tended to be subjective and focus on critical thinking. However, reflective thinking habits of mind must be in place before full use can be made of critical thinking skills. A comprehensive search of all reflective thinking literature used in conjunction with simulated patient experiences by healthcare students was undertaken. A guideline
was created for nurse faculty to use that outlined current …
Understanding Male Nursing Student Perceptions Of The Influence Of Gender: A Qualitative Case Study Approach Of Students, Faculty, And Administration In A Pacific Northwest Nursing Program, Jennifer Anne Anderson
Understanding Male Nursing Student Perceptions Of The Influence Of Gender: A Qualitative Case Study Approach Of Students, Faculty, And Administration In A Pacific Northwest Nursing Program, Jennifer Anne Anderson
Dissertations and Theses
In contemporary American society, the nursing profession is predominantly made up of white women. Currently, males make up only 6.8 percent of the three million nursing professionals in the U.S. and they are considered gender minorities within the nursing profession and within nursing education. As gender minorities, male students are identified as experiencing nursing programs and the practice of nursing differently than their female counterparts. The purpose of this single instrumental, within site case study was to explore the learning environment for male nursing students and to investigate the nature of the interactions between nursing faculty and male undergraduate students …
Nutrition, Appetite And Weight Loss In Elders Living In Long-Term Care Facilities, Karene Marie Goodman
Nutrition, Appetite And Weight Loss In Elders Living In Long-Term Care Facilities, Karene Marie Goodman
Dissertations
Abstract Elders living in long-term care facilities often experience weight loss. Weight loss in elders has been shown to increase their risk of death. Existing research has identified numerous factors associated with appetite and weight loss in elders. Dementia, depression, acute and chronic illness, and medications have all been identified as potential causes of decreased appetite and weight loss in elders. Only a few nutritional and appetite assessment tools exist, and these tools are not widely used in long-term care facilities. The purpose of this descriptive study was to validate the Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire (SNAQ), an appetite assessment tool …

Np Bookshelf. [Review Of The Book Compassion Fatigue And Burnout In Nursing: Enhancing Professional Quality Of Life, By V. Todaro-Franceschi], Leslie W. Miles
Faculty Publications
This book is not just for nurses who care for the dying patient but for all nurses who find themselves at some point in their career feeling burned out, dissatisfied with work life, bullied, or lacking a sense of meaning and purpose in their professional quality of life. Todaro-Franceschi identifies the causes of compassion fatigue and burnout as being multifactorial, yet having a core symptom of the nurse internalizing suffering to the point that it negatively transforms the care a nurse can give. The target audience is wide, with application to current practitioners, students, nurse educators, and anyone working in …

Help-Seeking Behaviors Of South African Women After Sexual Offence Victimization : The Lived Experience., Sheila Young Steinbrenner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There is little known about South African women’s help-seeking behavior after sexual offence victimization. South Africa is estimated to have the highest rate of rape and sexual assault globally. However, only one in six women seek health services post victimization. The importance of medical and mental health care following victimization has been clearly established. Therefore understanding more about South African women’s help-seeking after victimization is profoundly important. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of help-seeking behaviors of South African women after sexual offence victimization. Hermeneutic phenomenology as applied by van Manen provided the philosophical underpinnings, …

Faculty development programs that focus on student assessment can provide adjunct clinical faculty members with the necessary knowledge to become effective educators and ensure student, faculty, and program success.
The purpose of this study was to examine to what extent a faculty development workshop on evaluating students in clinical courses affected adjunct …
