Relationships Among Uncertainty, Coping, And Psychological Distress In Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment, Jennifer Sjostedt Avery Oct 2014

Relationships Among Uncertainty, Coping, And Psychological Distress In Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment, Jennifer Sjostedt Avery

Dissertations (1934 -)

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has an average prevalence of 18.9% and most often affects people 60 years of age or older. It is a cognitive stage between normal functioning and dementia (Petersen, 2003; Petersen, 2011; Petersen et al., 2014). MCI can be broken into two subtypes classified by the presence of memory impairment (amnestic MCI) or the lack thereof (nonamnestic MCI). Medical diagnostic criteria are commonly used to guide research with older adults with MCI. A theoretical framework that addresses the antecedents and consequences of MCI, specifically one examining the relationships among MCI, uncertainty, coping and psychological distress, is essential …

Palliative Care's Sacramental And Liturgical Foundations: Healthcare Formed By Faith, Hope, And Love, Darren M. Henson Oct 2014

Palliative Care's Sacramental And Liturgical Foundations: Healthcare Formed By Faith, Hope, And Love, Darren M. Henson

Dissertations (1934 -)

Medical history identifies Dame Cicely Saunders as the founder of modern hospice and palliative care for the unique care she gave to the incurably and terminally ill. Less known is how her Christian faith, combined with her knowledge of medicine, influenced her vision. This work retrieves the Christian roots of palliative care and asserts that the practice of faith preserves the practice of medicine from succumbing to medicalized dying--a phenomenon that excessively relies on technology with the implied hope that it will ultimately conquer illnesses and even death. Efficiency and effectiveness ground modern medicine's epistemology. These concepts follow the philosophical …

Epigenetics And Social Context: Implications For Disparity In Cardiovascular Disease, Karen L. Saban, Herbert L. Matthews, Holli A. Devon, Linda W. Janusek Oct 2014

Epigenetics And Social Context: Implications For Disparity In Cardiovascular Disease, Karen L. Saban, Herbert L. Matthews, Holli A. Devon, Linda W. Janusek

Nursing: School of Nursing Faculty Publications and Other Works

BACKGROUND:

Although it is well established that African Americans (AA) experience greater social stressors than non-Hispanic Whites (NHW), the extent to which early life adversity and cumulative social stressors such as perceived discrimination, neighborhood violence, subjective social status, and socioeconomic status contribute to disparity in coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke between AA and NHW are not well understood.

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this paper is to propose a conceptual model based upon McEwen’s Allostatic Load Model suggesting how the relationships among social context, early life adversity, psychological stress, inflammation, adaptation, and epigenetic signature may contribute to the development of …

Hispanic Mothers' Normative Beliefs And Intentions About The Discussion Of Sex-Related Topics With Their Adolescent Daughters, Dana M. Rodriguez Oct 2014

Hispanic Mothers' Normative Beliefs And Intentions About The Discussion Of Sex-Related Topics With Their Adolescent Daughters, Dana M. Rodriguez

Dissertations (1934 -)

Hispanic adolescent females continue to have rates of pregnancy and STIs, which exceed those of white non-Hispanic peers. When mothers engage in the discussion of sex-related topics (DSRTs) with their adolescent daughters, it has been shown to delay or decrease sexual intercourse. However, it has been found that Hispanic parents talk less with their daughters about sex-related topics (SRTs) when compared to other ethnic groups. Understanding why Hispanic mothers may or may not intend to engage in DSRTs is important in order to design culturally appropriate programs aimed at increasing their DSRTs. A sequential mixed-methods predictive correlational design framed by …

Minimizing Pain During Childhood Vaccination Injections: Improving Adherence To Vaccination Schedules, Lacey M. Eden, Janelle L. B. Macintosh, Karlen E. Luthy, Renea L. Beckstrand

Faculty Publications

Pain experienced in childhood can lead to long-term and psychologically detrimental effects. Unfortunately, the most common pain experienced in childhood is caused by vaccinations and may lead to non-adherence to the recommended vaccination schedule. As a result, it is the health care provider's responsibility to take measures to reduce vaccination pain; however, there are a plethora of pain relieving interventions during immunizations and it is unclear which interventions are most cost efficient, timely, and effective. Studies have been conducted to investigate the efficacy of different pain management interventions during vaccinations. This review evaluates various pain relieving interventions and provide health …

Comparing Generational Differences In Job Satisfaction And Retention (Anticipated Turnover) Among Nurses Working In Magnet Versus Non-Magnet Designated Hospitals, Laura E. Cima Sep 2014

Comparing Generational Differences In Job Satisfaction And Retention (Anticipated Turnover) Among Nurses Working In Magnet Versus Non-Magnet Designated Hospitals, Laura E. Cima

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background and Purpose of the Study: Experts in the nursing profession predict a catastrophic nursing shortage by 2025. Nursing shortages have devastating effects on hospitals from a quality of care, patient and family satisfaction and financial perspectives. Given these issues, the most logical approach to this shortage is retention of nurses rather than recruitment. The Magnet designation is one mechanism to retain nursing staff.

Another phenomenon exists within the work environment that makes this shortage different from others. Currently, there are four generations of nurses working in the healthcare environment. Each of these generational cohorts has different values and …

Birth Centre Management And Business Skill Training For Community Midwives Of Pakistan, Laila Lalji, Laila Akbar Ali, Marina Baig, Rozina Sewani, Arusa Lakhani, Karyn Kaufman, Rafat Jan

Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)

The Community Midwifery program was introduced in 2007 across Pakistan with the idea that the trained Community Midwives (CMWs) will be deployed back to their ‘native’ rural communities. Hence, they are not employed by government rather they must earn their income by charging fees for their services. It is expected from them to attract clients, establish birth clinics and operate as a small business to support and sustain them financially. However, the CMW training program only teaches students about antenatal, intranatal, postnatal and newborn care, family planning services and awareness of community dynamics and does not include content about setting …

Midwifery In India And Its Roadmap, Manju Chhugani Sep 2014

Midwifery In India And Its Roadmap, Manju Chhugani

Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)

Healthy women are the key to the health of any nation. Midwifery in India has climbed up the ladder of progression from before independence till the present day. In the pre-independence era, maternal and newborn care was given by indigenous dais who not only helped during childbirth but also acted as consultants for any condition of the mother related to birth. They were midwives in the literal sense. Over the time, midwifery in India has broadened to the presence of a skilled birth attendant during childbirth. The maternal health status of women and maternal mortality are closely related to the …

Exploring Adolescent Reproductive Health Knowledge, Perceptions, And Behavior, Among Students Of Non-Government Secondary Schools Supported By Brac Mentoring Program In Rural Bangladesh, Bachera Aktar, Malabika Sarker, Andrew Jenkins

Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)

Adolescence is the transition period from childhood to adulthood. Since Bangladesh is such a conservative society, reproductive health education for adolescents has not been widely introduced. Very small adolescent health components are included in the secondary and higher secondary school curricula. The BRAC Mentoring Program provides mentorship training to secondary school pupils to develop them as peer leaders. However, this program does not provide adolescent reproductive health education. Therefore, a study, supported by BRAC Education Program in rural Bangladesh, was conducted to explore the current status of reproductive health knowledge, perceptions and practice among the students of secondary schools. This …

Provision Of Mentorship Services For Midwives Working In Remote Areas In The Workplaces Of Afghanistan, Sabera Turkmani, Fatima Gohar, Pashtoon A. Zyaee, Mursal Musawi, Mahmood Azimi

Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)

Background: Midwives working in remote facilities have little opportunity to receive technical support and coaching services. To close this gap and support rural midwives the Afghan Midwives Association (AMA) designed a field-based mentorship program for midwives working in remote areas.
Methods: The process included five stages:
1. Conduct base line assessment of mentees (midwives) and health facilities.
2. Identify and select of mentees through competitive process.
3. Provide on-the-job coaching and mentoring services to the mentees.
4. Assess the progress of the midwives regularly using existing quality assurance performance standards.
5. End-line / final evaluation
Results: That results of assessments …

Skin Cancer Risk Perception And Sunscreen Use In Adolescent Female Soccer Athletes, Cheryl L. Butera Phd, Msn, Aprn, Fnp-Bc, Np-C, Phn

Dissertations

Over 3.5 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed annually in the United States. In adolescent females ages 15-19, melanoma is the second most common form of cancer. The greatest risk factor for skin cancer is ultraviolet rays from the sun. Research has shown that sunscreen use is protective of all skin cancers, especially melanoma. The purpose of this study was to obtain perceptions about risk of skin cancer and sunscreen use among 13- to 18-year-old adolescent female club soccer athletes as a basis for effective interventions to improve sunscreen use in this population. The Health Belief Model was employed …

Return To Work After Stroke: A Nursing State Of The Science., Catherine Harris, Phd, Mba, Crnp

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

There is a lack of research related to return to work (RTW) after acute ischemic stroke. Historically considered a disease of the elderly, acute ischemic stroke studies have not routinely used return to work as an outcome. Major stroke trials have not routinely collected this data as an endpoint. However, the mean age for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) has declined to 69 years of age, while the incidence in patients under the age of 55 has increased to 19%1-3. Changes in retirement age have also affected RTW as a consideration in stroke patients. Failure to RTW after recovery …
