Depressive Symptomatology And Perceived Social Support In Adolescents With Type 2 Diabetes, Kristiana Gay Huffman Cullum Phd, Cpnp Nov 2014

Depressive Symptomatology And Perceived Social Support In Adolescents With Type 2 Diabetes, Kristiana Gay Huffman Cullum Phd, Cpnp

Dissertations

Type 2 diabetes has increased dramatically in the pediatric population in the last decade. One of the comorbidities of diabetes is depression. In the presence of depression, diabetes may be mismanaged by patients and lead to a decline in health. Diabetes with comorbid depression may have better disease management outcomes in the presence of higher levels of social support. Defining childhood depression, which encompasses adolescence, and the subtleties of this disorder compared to the adult counterpart, was needed to better delineate important variables for this research study. There are several instruments that evaluate adolescents' perceived social support, but a fairly …

The Effects Of Enhanced Discharge Education On Knowledge Retention In First Time Stroke/Tia Patients, Edward M. Stiner Jr. Nov 2014

The Effects Of Enhanced Discharge Education On Knowledge Retention In First Time Stroke/Tia Patients, Edward M. Stiner Jr.

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

he purpose of this study is to determine whether patients aged 40-65 years, who are admitted for stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA) for the first time and who receive enhanced stroke discharge education have higher levels of education retention than patients aged 40-65 years who are admitted for stroke/TIA for the first time who receive standard stroke discharge education without the enhancement. Forty male and female participants were randomly placed into either a standard discharge education N=20 or enhanced discharge education group: N=20. The standard discharge education group received the usual stroke/TIA discharge education administered by the staff …

Effect Of A Social Script Ipad Application For Children With Autism Going To Imaging, Norah L. Johnson, Octavia Bree, Erin E. Lalley, Kelly Rettler, Pam Grande, Md O. Gani, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

This randomized controlled trial feasibility study tested the effectiveness of an iPad® application (app) social script intervention for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) going to imaging and their parent (n = 32 parent/child dyads). Parents of the children exposed to the app (n = 16) had lower state anxiety compared to the parents whose children were not exposed to the app (n = 16) (effect size 0.33). Children exposed to the app had fewer externalized challenging behaviors than the control group (effect size 0.56). The results demonstrate feasibility and efficacy of the intervention. Further study of …

Access Site Complications After Peripheral Vascular Interventions: Incidence, Predictors, And Outcomes, Daniel Ortiz, Arshad Jahangir, Maharaj Singh, Suhail Allaqaband, Tanvir Bajwa, Mark W. Mewissen

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Background—

Access site hematomas and pseudoaneurysms are the most frequent complications of peripheral vascular intervention (PVI); however, their incidence and risk factors remain unclear.

Methods and Results—

We retrospectively analyzed data from the multicenter Vascular Quality Initiative on 22 226 patients who underwent 27 048 PVI from August 2007 to May 2013. Primary end points included incidence and predictors of access site complications (ASCs), length of postprocedural hospitalization, discharge status, and 30-day and 1-year mortality. ASC complicated 936 procedures (3.5%). Of these, 74.4% were minor complications, 9.7% were moderate requiring transfusion, 5.4% were moderate requiring thrombin injection, and 10.5% were …

Functional Behavioral Analysis And Social Scripting For The Older Patient With Schizophrenia: A Staff Development Program, Laura Markwick, Charlene Smith, Diane J. Mick

Nursing Faculty/Staff Publications

Executive functioning is the ability to plan, strategize, organize, and focus on details. Impaired executive functioning plays a significant role in behavior disturbances. Lack of inhibition, impaired abstract reasoning, thought perseverance, rigidity in routine, and lack of insight disrupt social skills and daily life. Autism and schizophrenia present some similar behaviors, including impaired executive functioning, often resulting in pharmacological management as many healthcare professionals receive limited training in executive functioning. Non-pharmacological tools used in autism for behavior management include functional behavioral analysis and social scripting, which help to identify causes of behavior and teach more appropriate behavioral responses. Described here …

Drew, Patricia Harris, Jessica K. Zègre-Hemsey, Tina Mammone, Daniel Schindler, Rebeca Salas-Boni, Yong Bai, Adelita Tinoco, Quan Ding, Xiao Hu

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Purpose: Physiologic monitors are plagued with alarms that create a cacophony of sounds and visual alerts causing ‘‘alarm fatigue’’ which creates an unsafe patient environment because a life-threatening event may be missed in this milieu of sensory overload. Using a state-of-the-art technology acquisition infrastructure, all monitor data including 7 ECG leads, all pressure, SpO2, and respiration waveforms as well as user settings and alarms were stored on 461 adults treated in intensive care units. Using a well-defined alarm annotation protocol, nurse scientists with 95% inter-rater reliability annotated 12,671 arrhythmia alarms.

Results: A total of 2,558,760 unique alarms occurred in the …
