Behavioral symptoms of dementia often present the greatest challenge for informal caregivers. One behavior, that is a constant concern for caregivers, is the person with dementia leaving a designated area such that their whereabouts become unknown to the caregiver or a missing incident. Based on an extensive literature review and published findings of their own research, members of the International Consortium on Wandering and Missing Incidents constructed a preliminary missing incidents model. Examining the evidence base, specific factors within each category of the model were further described, reviewed and modified until consensus was reached regarding the final model. The model …
Relationships Between Experiential Learning And Effects On Senior Nursing Students’ Self-Efficacy And Knowledge: A Non-Experimental Predictive Correlation Multiple Regression Analysis, Shanna Akers
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Preparing nursing students to transition into the professional registered nurse role is the task of nurse educators. These educators must train students to function in multiple nursing specialties post-graduation, to include critical care. As more nursing graduates enter into areas such as intensive care units and emergency rooms, nurse educators must prepare them to work with critically ill patients. Increased exposure to critical care clinical experiences and simulations may be one method to prepare them for these complex, high-acuity patient situations. In order to determine whether or not a relationship exists between increased hours of experience and effects on self-efficacy …
Disaster Preparedness Education And Resource Needs For Pregnant And Post-Partum Families, Ellen A. Erickson Bonner
Disaster Preparedness Education And Resource Needs For Pregnant And Post-Partum Families, Ellen A. Erickson Bonner
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Hurricane Katrina in 2005 heightened awareness of the need to educate vulnerable populations on disaster preparedness. However, little has been written specifically on the preparedness needs of the pregnant and post-partum families. Only one article explores disaster preparedness education for this population. To fill this gap. An interprofessional sample (n=115) rated the relevance of the educational topics and birthing kit items proposed by the panel from the previous Delphi study. The education topics were reduced to four themes that explained 66.80% of the variance and the birthing kit items were reduced to six themes that explained 70.99% of the variance.
Technostress Effects On Technology Acceptance By Nurse Faculty, Joseph W. Tacy
Technostress Effects On Technology Acceptance By Nurse Faculty, Joseph W. Tacy
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Technology is an essential tool used in nursing academia. The rapid changes in technology and required adaptations can result in technostress, but little research exists about technostress among nurse educators. Gaps in this area of research generated several questions regarding the adaption to technology among nurse faculty and the impact technology has on stress, system use, job satisfaction, and intent to stay in the profession. This dissertation explored technostress and its influence on technology use, acceptance, job satisfaction, and intention to stay within the profession. Included are two manuscripts. The first is a concept analysis of technostress. The second manuscript …
Factors Associated With High Risk Infant Follow-Up Attendance, Martha Grant Fuller
Factors Associated With High Risk Infant Follow-Up Attendance, Martha Grant Fuller
Dissertations
Prematurity is a significant public health problem and preterm infants face well described risks of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological theory of development describes interactions between biological and environmental factors and explains how these interactions can impact development. Systematic follow-up of preterm, high-risk infants is recommended for early identification of problems and provision of interventions and support services. Most research on follow-up attendance has involved small, single sites. A retrospective analysis of population based data available in the California Children’s Services High Risk Infant Follow-up Quality of Care Initiative (HRIF-QCI) data system was performed to examine factors associated with attendance …
Diabetes Self-Management Education For Adults With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Rondalyn Dennis-Bradshaw
Diabetes Self-Management Education For Adults With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Rondalyn Dennis-Bradshaw
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Diabetes, a major public health challenge in St. Kitts, has been a focus of international public health community research. Although researchers have demonstrated that diabetes self-management education is a cost-effective strategy for the prevention of diabetes-related complications, they have yet to establish whether there is adequate education occurring in treatment settings with diabetic patients. The purpose of the study was to implement and evaluate the short-term effectiveness of a diabetes self-management education intervention on diabetes-related knowledge and accepted behavioral changes to decrease risk for complications. Based on a self-care approach, this education intervention was designed to improve diabetes-related knowledge and …

What Can Pakistan Do To Address Maternal And Child Health Over The Next Decade?, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta, Assad Hafeez
What Can Pakistan Do To Address Maternal And Child Health Over The Next Decade?, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta, Assad Hafeez
Department of Paediatrics and Child Health
Pakistan faces huge challenges in meeting its international obligations and agreed Millennium Development Goal targets for reducing maternal and child mortality. While there have been reductions in maternal and under-5 child mortality, overall rates are barely above secular trends and neonatal mortality has not reduced much. Progress in addressing basic determinants, such as poverty, undernutrition, safe water, and sound sanitary conditions as well as female education, is unsatisfactory and, not surprisingly, population growth hampers economic growth and development across the country. The devolution of health to the provinces has created challenges as well as opportunities for action. This paper presents …

Context: Persistent and intense stress leads to chronic activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, placing an individual at increased risk for the development of disease. HPA activity inhibits ovarian functioning, and may contribute to female infertility.
Objective: The objective of the study was to explore the association of HPA activity with ovarian functioning in female participants with and without chronic abdominal pain (CAP).
Design/setting/and subjects: A secondary data analysis was performed using data from female participants in a natural history protocol at the National Institutes of Health. A total of 36 females (19–39 years, mean 27.11) were included in the …

Autism diagnosis rates trail significantly in the African American community. This pre-test post-test pilot study evaluated an African American inner-city church health ambassadors (HAs) autism spectrum disorder (ASD) awareness training session. The participants included 12 HAs who attended the 1 hour training session organized by the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. Results of surveys showed higher mean scores post training for (1) HA attitudes about the potential for children to improve with applied behavior analysis therapy; (2) HA self-efficacy for having information about ASD screening materials; (3) strategies HAs could use to help parents/caregivers of children with developmental delays and …

Understanding Anterior Knee Pain: Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, Craig Nuttall, Blaine A. Winters
Understanding Anterior Knee Pain: Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, Craig Nuttall, Blaine A. Winters
Faculty Publications
Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is 1 of the most common causes of anterior knee pain and should be included in the differential diagnosis for anterior knee pain in every patient. PFPS is characterized as an overuse injury. The exact mechanism of injury is still under investigation, but it is believed to stem from maltracking of the patella. PFPS commonly presents in adults who complain of anterior knee pain with activity. This pain can lead to significant disability. When treated appropriately, disability and chronicity can be avoided or reduced.

The Short- And Long-Term Effects Of Child Abuse And Their Implications For The Suggested Length Of Physical And Psychosocial Treatment Regimens, Christine M. Ruff
The Short- And Long-Term Effects Of Child Abuse And Their Implications For The Suggested Length Of Physical And Psychosocial Treatment Regimens, Christine M. Ruff
Senior Honors Theses
Child abuse is the physical, psychological, or neglectful maltreatment of a child by a caregiver. Intimate partner violence relates closely to child mistreatment. Children are not likely to disclose that their parent or guardian is abusing them. Child abuse may result in short-term consequences, long-term consequences, or death. Some negative outcomes of maltreatment include delinquency, mental health issues, physical problems, educational underachievement, and socioeconomic disparities. The cycle of mistreatment is when a parent who suffered abuse as a child is more likely to maltreat his or her own child. There are factors that protect from the consequences of mistreatment.
