The Effect Of An Osteoporosis Health Promotion Education Program For Perimenopausal And Postmenopausal Women, Donna G. Cobb Aug 1997

The Effect Of An Osteoporosis Health Promotion Education Program For Perimenopausal And Postmenopausal Women, Donna G. Cobb

MSN Research Projects

Development of osteoporosis has been a major concern for women who are menopausal since this bone disorder is a major cause of fractures in the spine, hip, wrist, and other bones. A relationship has been suggested between osteoporosis prevention and health-promoting behaviors, yet little is known about the attitudinal variables that may predict osteoporosis preventive behaviors among menopausal women. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of an educational program on behaviors related to osteoporosis prevention. A pre-experimental design was used to test the null hypothesis; There will be no difference in health promotion behaviors of women …

Hiv Transmission Risk Behaviors Of Hiv-Positive Adolescents In Mississippi, Kristi A. Henderson Aug 1997

Hiv Transmission Risk Behaviors Of Hiv-Positive Adolescents In Mississippi, Kristi A. Henderson

Coping Strategies Of Mothers With Developmentally Delayed Children Who Attend A Support Group And Who Do Not Attend A Support Group, Donna Salvo Foster Aug 1997

Coping Strategies Of Mothers With Developmentally Delayed Children Who Attend A Support Group And Who Do Not Attend A Support Group, Donna Salvo Foster

MSN Research Projects

When faced with stress, behavioral and psychological reactions occur to decrease the person's perception of the stress. Rearing a child with developmental delay is one such stressful event. The purpose of this investigation was to explore coping strategies of mothers who are rearing a child with developmental delay. Two hypotheses were generated; There will be no statistically significant differences in perceived coping strategy scores used by mothers with developmentally delayed children in a support group and those not in a support group, and there will be no statistically significant differences in perceived effectiveness of coping strategy scores used by mothers …

The Impact Of An Educational Program On Asthma Symptoms And Knowledge In The Late Adolescent, Jeanette Arnold Lawson Aug 1997

The Impact Of An Educational Program On Asthma Symptoms And Knowledge In The Late Adolescent, Jeanette Arnold Lawson

MSN Research Projects

Despite advances in medical technology, statistical evidence indicates that asthma related morbidity and mortality rates continue to rise, especially in the late adolescent population. Current research literature suggests that patient education may be beneficial in obtaining and maintaining asthma control in the pediatric and adult populations. Currently, however, there is little research available regarding the impact of education in the late adolescent population. This study, therefore, sought to determine the impact of an educational program on asthma symptoms and knowledge among late adolescents. Becker's Health Belief Model was used as the theoretical framework. A quantitative, quasi-experimental design was utilized to …

The Lived Experience Of Women Prior To Hospitalization For Acute Myocardial Infarction, Llamae R. Hughes Dnsc

Dissertations

Recent research indicates that the majority of women underestimate their risk of developing coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD claims the lives of more women than all forms of cancer; however, women have not received the symptom recognition or treatment that has been accorded to men with CAD. Review of literature indicated a lack of research regarding the experiences of women with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). This phenomenological study explored the lived experience of women with AMI immediately prior to hospitalization. The lines of inquiry focused on descriptive language regarding pre-event feelings, the symptoms experienced at AMI onset, their response to …

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

T cell cytokines play an important role in mediating airway inflammation in asthma. The predominance of a Th2 cytokine profile, particularly interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-5, is associated with the pathogenesis and course of asthma. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that a stressful life event alters the pattern of cytokine release in asthmatic individuals. Thirteen healthy controls and 21 asthmatic adolescents gave blood samples three times over a semester: midsemester, during the week of final examinations, and 2-3 weeks after examinations. Interferon-γ (IFN-γ), IL-2, IL-4, and IL-5 were measured from supernatants of cells stimulated with PHA/PMA …

Rethinking The Nursing Paradigm: The Ethics Of Gatekeeping In American And British Nursing, David C. Grandy Jul 1997

Rethinking The Nursing Paradigm: The Ethics Of Gatekeeping In American And British Nursing, David C. Grandy

Honors Theses

In the British National Health Service (NHS), the general practice physician (GP) serves as gatekeeper to resources.1 In the United States, managed care physicians, who attempt to contain health care expenditures by establishing priorities and strictly regulating treatment accessibility, necessarily employ gatekeeping responsibilities in practice.2 However, both systems of health care generally overlook the potential contribution of nurses in identifying and implementing effective methods of resource allocation. The central focus of this thesis includes two primary assertions. First, I will argue that nurses currently function as gatekeepers both in England and the United States, and that the traditional nursing paradigm …

The Lived Experience Of Healing Touch With Cancer Patients, Charlene Ann Christiano Jul 1997

The Lived Experience Of Healing Touch With Cancer Patients, Charlene Ann Christiano

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The recent use of complementary therapies by cancer patients has prompted the study of the use of Healing Touch, an energy based therapy, to learn the meaning of the experience. By using Ray's Caring Inquiry, a phenomenologic-hermeneutic process, the lived experience of receiving Healing Touch was elicited from three cancer patients. Through the interactions of the Healing Touch practitioners, the cancer patient participants, and the energy in and around them, specific themes were expressed: body-physical, emotion-feeling, mental-knowing, and spirit-essence. Further abstracting lead to the metathemes sensation and perception. Through a change in consciousness, a oneness/wholeness was experienced. The unity of …
