Postpartum Weight Self-Management: A Concept Analysis, Jennifer M. Ohlendorf Jan 2013

Postpartum Weight Self-Management: A Concept Analysis, Jennifer M. Ohlendorf

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Aim: The aim of this concept analysis is to create a clear definition and framework to guide weight self-management research and promotion of healthy weight self-management during the postpartum period. Background: A woman’s ability to manage her weight through the postpartum transition has lifelong implications for her weight status. Methods: This concept analysis was guided by Walker and Avant (2005). A broad search of sources was performed, yielding 56 articles in which postpartum weight self-management was the main focus. Results: From consideration of the attributes of postpartum weight self-management, a descriptive, situation-specific theory emerged: Postpartum weight self-management is a process …

Authoritative Feeding Behaviors To Reduce Child Bmi Through Online Interventions, Marilyn Frenn, Jessica E. Pruszynski, Holly Felzer, Jiannan Zhang

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose.

The purpose of the study was to examine the feasibility and initial efficacies of parent- and/or child-focused online interventions and variables correlated with child body mass index percentile change.

Design and Methods.

A feasibility and cluster randomized controlled pilot study was used.

Results.

Recruitment was more effective at parent–teacher conferences compared with when materials were sent home with fifth- to eighth-grade culturally diverse students. Retention was 90% for students and 62–74% for parents. Authoritative parent feeding behaviors were associated with lower child body mass index. A larger study is warranted.

Practice Implications.

Online approaches may provide a feasible option …

Andersen, LL, Jay, K, Andersen, CH, Jakobsen, MD, Sundstrup, E, Topp, R, and Behm, DG. Acute effects of massage or active exercise in relieving muscle soreness: randomized controlled trial. J Strength Cond Res 27(12): 3352–3359, 2013—Massage is commonly believed to be the best modality for relieving muscle soreness. However, actively warming up the muscles with exercise may be an effective alternative. The purpose of this study was to compare the acute effect of massage with active exercise for relieving muscle soreness. Twenty healthy female volunteers (mean age 32 years) participated in this examiner-blind randomized controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01478451). The participants …

Efficacy Of A New Postpartum Transition Protocol For Avoiding Pregnancy, Thomas Bouchard, Richard Fehring, Mary Schneider Jan 2013

Efficacy Of A New Postpartum Transition Protocol For Avoiding Pregnancy, Thomas Bouchard, Richard Fehring, Mary Schneider

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Introduction: The postpartum period is a challenging time for family planning, especially for women who breastfeed. Breastfeeding delays the return of menses (lactational amenorrhea), but ovulation often occurs before first menses. For this reason, a protocol was developed to assist women in identifying their return of fertility postpartum to avoid pregnancy.

Methods: In this prospective, 12-month, longitudinal cohort study, 198 postpartum women aged 20 to 45 years (mean age, 30.2 years) were taught a protocol for avoiding pregnancy with either online or in-person instruction. A hand-held fertility monitor was used to identify the fertile period by testing for urinary changes …

The Role Of Self-Transcendence : A Missing Variable In The Pursuit Of Successful Aging?, Valerie Lander Mccarthy, Jiying Ling, Robert M. Carini Jan 2013

The Role Of Self-Transcendence : A Missing Variable In The Pursuit Of Successful Aging?, Valerie Lander Mccarthy, Jiying Ling, Robert M. Carini

Faculty Scholarship

While successful aging is often defined as the absence of disease and disability or as life satisfaction, self-transcendence may also play an important role. The objective of this research was to test a nursing theory of successful aging proposing that transcendence and adaptation predict successful aging. In this cross-sectional exploratory study, a convenience sample of older adults (N = 152) were surveyed about self-transcendence, proactive coping, and successful aging. Using hierarchical multiple regression, self-transcendence, proactive coping, and all control variables (i.e., sex, race, perceived health, place of residence) together explained 50% of the variance in successful aging (p < 0.001). However, proactive coping alone was not a significant predictor of successful aging. Thus, this study did not support the theory that both self-transcendence and proactive coping predict successful aging. Self-transcendence was the only significant contributor to this multidimensional view of successful aging. Self-transcendence is an important variable in the pursuit of successful aging, which merits further investigation.

Preparing Rn’S For The Online Learning Environment, Jayne Josephsen, Vivian Schrader

Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Adult learners returning to online education can face considerable barriers to the successful completion of their degree. These obstacles may be due to work and family obligations, lack of familiarity with course and academic requirements, the use of educational technology, or lack of self-direction in their learning. The authors conceptualized, developed, and implemented a preparatory course in an RN-BS Online Completion program designed to familiarize students with online learning and technological and personal skill requirements that could lead to academic success. This article outlines course development and implementation, syllabus and course objectives related to distance learning, and assignments and rubrics …

Barriers To Diabetes Care In Appalachia: Challenges Faced By Healthcare Providers, Megan Cullinan Jan 2013

Barriers To Diabetes Care In Appalachia: Challenges Faced By Healthcare Providers, Megan Cullinan

Senior Honors Theses

Appalachia is a region of the United States that is characterized by high rates of poverty, low levels of education, elevated incidence of chronic disease, and inadequate healthcare. Compared to the national average, the area has an elevated incidence of Type 2 diabetes. Though this disease process is an issue that must be addressed by healthcare providers, these providers face many challenges and barriers to providing adequate care for this disease in the Appalachian population. Barriers to care include geography with limited transportation, an inadequate number of healthcare personnel, patient inability to afford healthcare, patient attitudes toward diabetes care, and …
