The Stress Buffering Effects Of Positive Life Events And Personality (Hardiness) In Undergraduates With Dental Anxiety, Janette Louise Seville

Previous studies have independently identified positive life events and the hardy personality as variables that reduce the influence of life stress on physical or paychological disturbance. The present study investigates the possible stress buffering effects of hardiness and positive events. Seventy-five undergraduates, identified as having dental anxiety, were randomly assigned to one of five film groups. Groups viewed either a positive film, a negative film, both films (in one of two sequences), or no film. Dependent measures of dental anxiety. positive affect, negative affect, and heart rate were observed. Multiple tests of a priori hypotheses yielded partial support for the …

The highly selective permeability of cerebral blood vessels, termed the blood-brain barrier, is due to endothelial tight junctions (zonulae occludentes). Hyperosmotic solutions reversibly open the blood-brain barrier. The purpose of this study is to determine the immediate effect of hyperosmotic arabinose perfusion upon the cerebrovascular endothelium, the morphology of the cerebral cortex, and the cortical extracellular space.

Twelve adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were separated into three groups of four animals each: control, intermediate, and extreme. Genomic DNA clones that coded for the bifunctional dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) and thymidylate synthase (TS) (DHFR-TS) activities from a pyrimethamine-sensitive strain of Plasmodium falciparum were isolated and sequenced. The deduced DHFR-TS protein contained 608 amino acids (71,682 Da). The coding region for DHFR-TS contained no intervening sequences and had a high A + T content (75%). The DHFR domain, in the amino-terminal portion of the protein, was joined by a 94-amino acid junction sequence to the TS domain in the carboxyl-terminal portion of the protein. Cleavage and polyadenylation of substrate RNAs containing the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) thymidine kinase (tk) gene polyadenylation signal region were examined in HeLa cell nuclear extract. 3'-End RNA processing was accurate and efficient and required ATP and Mg2+. Cleavage, but not polyadenylation, occurred in the presence of EDTA or when ATP was replaced with 3' dATP (cordycepin) or AMP(CH2)PP, a nonhydrolyzable analog of ATP. Processing in vitro and in vivo showed the same signal element requirements: a series of substrates containing linker scanning, internal deletion, and small insertion mutations was processed with the same relative efficiencies and at …

Fifteen adults from the general population with chronic tension headaches were divided into four groups. Four were assigned to relaxation instructions, biofeedback (EMG and temperature), and home relaxation practice; four were assigned to relaxation instructions and biofeedback; four were assigned to biofeedback alone; and three were assigned to a no-treatment group. Subjects completed a ten-day baseline period followed by a three-week treatment period. Measures were taken of headache frequency, duration, intensity, frontalis EMG, and temperature recordings. Comparisons of pre- and post-treatment data indicated that not one treatment group was significantly different from any other treatment group, including the no-treatment group, …

Tyrosine protein kinases, in addition to their roles as viral transforming proteins and growth factor receptors, have been suggested to have specialized functions in tissue specific processes and in differentiation. High levels of soluble tyrosine kinases have been found in human serum and plasma. To determine if the level of tyrosine kinase activity is development tally expressed in human serum, we assayed sera from 214 individuals of different ages from newborns to 90 years. We found that serum tyrosine kinase levels are high in newborns and the levels closely parallel skeletal growth until late adolescence. The serum tyrosine kinase levels …

Detection Of Human Dna Polymorphisms With A Simplified Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis Technique., Walter W. Noll, Mary Collins

Single base pair differences between otherwise identical DNA molecules can result in altered melting behavior detectable by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. We have developed a simplified procedure for using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis to detect base pair changes in genomic DNA. Genomic DNA is digested with restriction enzymes and hybridized in solution to labeled single-stranded probe DNA. The excess probe is then hybridized to complementary phage M13 template DNA, and the reaction mixture is electrophoresed on a denaturing gradient gel. Only the genomic DNA probe hybrids migrate into the gel. Differences in hybrid mobility on the gel indicate base pair …

Release of fibrinopeptide B from fibrinogen by copperhead venom procoagulant enzyme results in a form of fibrin (beta-fibrin) with weaker self-aggregation characteristics than the normal product (alpha beta-fibrin) produced by release of fibrinopeptides A (FPA) and B (FPB) by thrombin. We investigated the ultrastructure of these two types of fibrin as well as that of beta-fibrin prepared from fibrinogen Metz (A alpha 16 Arg----Cys), a homozygous dysfibrinogenemic mutant that does not release FPA. In this Chapel, President Roberts explains the need for $8 Million to keep the City of Faith, the Medical Missions Program, and Oral Roberts University afloat. Examination of harpacticoid copepod morphology was conducted to determine whether morphological resemblance provides a reasonable index of habltat utilization and movement. Discriminant analysis was used to explore the relationship between body form and habitat utilization for copepod species collected from 3 subhabitats within seagrass beds in Tampa Bay, Florida. To examine the accuracy of our procedure the discriminant function derived for Tarnpa Bay copepods was applied to copepods collected in worldwide studies. Catabolism of the essential branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) by skeletal muscle of the rat was investigated. In diaphragm muscles incubated in vitro oxidation and transamination of leucine or valine were accelerated by diabetes or starvation overnight. In the presence of pyruvate, transamination of BCAA by diaphragms was increased; oxidation of BCAA by diaphragms from diabetic or starved rats was increased by pyruvate but was inhibited in diaphragms of normal, fed rats. The effects on transamination were verified by direct measurements of the alpha-ketoisocaproate (KIC) product of leucine transamination. The effect of pyruvate on KIC oxidation by diaphragms was similar to …

Legionella pneumophila was first recognized as a cause of human pneumonia in 1976 . Since then, much has been learned about the microbiology, pathophysiology and epidemiology of this organism. The features which permit one strain but not another to invade human lung tissue and produce disease remain incompletely understood. This study e valuated several attributes of a virulent and an avirulent strain of L. pneumophila in an attempt to identify characteristics which would distinguish the two. Evaluation of a new medium, buffered egg yolk agar, showed that virulence was maintained after 26 passages, which was the same as the buffered …

Two ataxia telangiectasia patients with unusual clinical and cellular features are described. Cultured fibroblasts and PHA stimulated lymphocytes from these two patients showed a smaller increase of radiosensitivity than cells from other A-T patients, as measured by colony forming ability or induced chromosome damage respectively, after exposure to ionising radiation. The response of DNA synthesis to irradiation of these cells was, however, the same as for other A-T patients. Cells from a third patient with some clinical features of A-T but with a very protracted course also showed low levels of radiation induced chromosome damage, but colony forming ability and …

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a video recorded ocean scene as a relaxation technique by comparing it with an established method, progressive relaxation training (Jacobson, 1938) on their ability to affect the following physiological measurements: systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, pulse, and respiration.

Previous studies have indicated that the murine surface antigen Lyb2 is involved in an activation pathway that apparently does not involve the surface immunoglobulin receptor. As sIg has been shown to transduce its activation signal through the breakdown of phosphatidylinositol (PI), and since activation via Lyb2 does not involve sIg, it was of interest to determine if binding to Lyb2 generates a PI response. We have demonstrated that an allele-specific monoclonal antibody to Lyb2 (anti-Lyb2 mab), which has previously been shown to drive B cells into S, also activated PI metabolism in these cells. Traditional methods of collecting, analyzing and storing data from cardiac cell membrane electrophysiology experiments have become increasingly cumbersome and unwieldy as experimental protocols have become more sophisticated and complex. A global approach to collecting, analyzing, refining and storing electrophysiologic data, as well as a new approach to mathematical modeling of cell membrane single ion channel kinetics, was developed. This utilizes a comprehensive microcomputer based system of software with specialized analog and digital electronics for data acquisition, analysis and archiving. This is c. 1987 brochure is a four page advertisement announcing phase II of the Healing Outreach Center and including Journey Through the Bible Center on the campus of Oral Roberts University. The Journey Through the Bible was an interactive media presentation of biblical stories in decorated rooms. Phase one contained the creation room and Noah's ark. Heifers and first calvers present the major problems of the beef breeding herd. Reproduction rates, calf growth and survival of first calvers are generally much poorer than those of adult breeders.

Early successful reproductive performance is important in beef herds because of the high overhead cost of keeping breeding beef heifers or cows, Where possible, beef producers should aim to join heifers at 14 to 15 months of age. To achieve this goal, producers should set production targets for those animals. These targets will differ from farm to farm depending on when calves are turned off and the seasonal feed …

The contribution of the central nervous system to the hypotensive action of atenolol was examined in spontaneously hypertensive rats and normotensive dogs. In the rat, atenolol produced a hypotensive response which was stereoselective for the ��-isomer after both central and peripheral administration. In addition, 10 µg ��-atenolol administered intra-cisternally produced a hypotensive response not observed after intravenous administration of the same dose. The hypotensive action of atenolol was further examined using a method developed for the quantita­tion of atenolol in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of dogs. Atenolol rapidly entered the CSF after intravenous administration, producing a hypotensive response in …
