A study was conducted to determine the effect of culling BVDV carrier animals on the seroconversion against BVDV in the new generation of heifers from a dairy herd located in Arequipa, Peru. Blood samples were collected from 6-12 month old females in four sampling periods: January (n = 73), June (n = 48), October 2003 (n = 48), and January 2004 (n = 35) to evaluate their serological against BVDV status and to screen for carrier animals using the virus neutralization and antigen-capture ELISA tests, respectively. Inhibition of protein synthesis occurs in the post-ischemic reperfused kidney but the molecular mechanism of renal translation arrest is unknown. Several pathways have been identified whereby cell stress inhibits translation initiation via phosphorylation of the alpha subunit of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2a, phospho-form eIF2a(P)]. Here, we report a 20-fold increase in eIF2a(P) in kidney homogenates following 10 min of cardiac arrest-induced ischemia and 10 min reperfusion. Using immunohistochemistry, we observed eIF2a(P) in tubular epithelial cells in both cortex and medulla, where the greatest eIF2a(P) staining was found in epithelial cells of the so-called watershed area at the corticomedullary junction. …

Background

Both Taxotere and Capecitabine have shown anti-cancer activity against various cancers including prostate cancer. In combination, Taxotere plus Capecitabine has demonstrated higher anti-cancer activity in advanced breast cancers. However, the molecular mechanisms of action of Taxotere and Capecitabine have not been fully elucidated in prostate cancer.

Injury to the peritoneum during surgery is followed by a healing process that frequently results in the attachment of adjacent organs by a fibrous mass, referred commonly as adhesions. Because injuries to the peritoneum during surgery are inevitable, it is imperative that we understand the mechanisms of adhesion formation to prevent its occurrence. Trichloroethylene (TCE) is listed with the EPA as a suspected human carcinogen and is ubiquitous in the environment (US EPA 1992). Chloral hydrate (CH) is a sedative drug and a cytochrome P450 (CYP 450)-derived metabolite of TCE (Klaassen 2001). Chloral hydrate is metabolized in the liver to the rodent hepatocarcinogen trichloroacetate (TCA) by aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), and to the non-carcinogenic metabolite trichloroethanol (TCEOH) by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) (Klaassen 2001). Cytoplasmic polyadenylation is important in the control of mRNA stability and translation, and for early animal development and synaptic plasticity. Here, we focus on vertebrate poly(A) polymerases that are members of the recently described GLD2 family. We identify and characterize two closely related GLD2 proteins in Xenopus oocytes, and show that they possess PAP activity in vivo and in vitro and that they bind known polyadenylation factors and mRNAs known to receive poly(A) during development. We propose that at least two distinct polyadenylation complexes exist in Xenopus oocytes, one of which contains GLD2; the other, maskin and Pumilio. GLD2 protein …

The most commonly used measurements for evaluating the accuracy of diagnostic tests in binary data are sensitivity and specificity. Sensitivity refers to the ability of a test to detect patients with some specific disease. Specificity describes how well test abnormality is restricted to those persons who have the disease in question. The variance estimators of these measurements are usually obtained using a binomial estimator, although there are several other methods. Certain phenoxyacetate derivatives used as plant growth regulators act as plant hormones. 2,4-D dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid are widely used in vegetable growing, especially tomatoes, in our region. These phenoxyacetic acid compounds are a potential hazard for the environment. There are conflicting results and inconsistent data about these herbicides in the literature. This is the first report of genotoxicity of 4-CPA evaluated by sister chromatid exchange in human lymphocyte culture. No significant change was found in sister chromatid exchange frequency at the tested 4-CPA concentration.

The optimal anesthetic technique for transvaginal ultrasound guided oocyte retrieval (TUGOR) is not known. We present a case series of patients having TUGOR under intravenous remifentanil infusion and paracervical block (PCB). One hundred four unpremedicated patients were included in our study. After monitoring heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO_2) and end tidal CO_2 (ETCO_2), a remifentanil infusion of 0.25 µg kg^{-1} min^{-1} was started. This study was planned in order to make good the lack of information about population-based data on the prevalence of brucellosis in the Kayseri region. This cross-sectional research was performed on 1850 individuals living in the rural regionaround Kayseri. People aged 15-85 in 9 districts in this rural areas were interviewed and blood samples were screened using the Rose Bengal Agglutination test. The overall prevalence of brucellosis was 3.4%. The objective of our study was to assess procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) plasma concentrations in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergoing haemodialysis sessions and the effect of intermittent haemodialysis on PCT levels. We measured plasma PCT and CRP levels in 43 ESRD patients without evidence of systemic infection at the beginning of haemodialysis and 4 hours later. Keratinocyte carcinoma (KC) has been recently used in order to define basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Although an histopathologic analysis is standard for diagnosis, clinical diagnosis is still important for the choice of proper treatment.
