Implantation of synthetic materials into the body elicits inflammatory host responses that limit medical device integration and biological performance. This inflammatory cascade involves protein adsorption, leukocyte recruitment and activation, cytokine release, and fibrous encapsulation of the implant. We present a coating strategy based on thin films of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel microparticles (i.e. microgels) cross-linked with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate. These particles were grafted onto a clinically relevant polymeric material to generate conformal coatings that significantly reduced in vitro fibrinogen adsorption and primary human monocyte/macrophage adhesion and spreading. Pleural involvement is a rare presentation of brucellosis. There are only a few case reports in the literature presenting with pleural involvement due to brucellosis. In this report, we present a case with exudative pleural fluid first considered as tuberculous pleurisy due to lymphocyte predominance and elevated level of pleural adenosine deaminase, but later diagnosed as brucella pleurisy with positive serologic and microbiologic test results. In conclusion, in the differential diagnosis of pleurisies, routine serologic and bacteriologic methods appear to be more important than pleural adenosine deaminase elevation, especially in regions endemic for both tuberculosis and brucellosis.

Seckel syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by prenatal and postnatal growth retardation, bird-headed face and mild mental retardation. It is a disorder involving the DNA damage-response genes. Failure in the DNA damage response and repair process can cause chromosomal instability. In addition, it is possible that there are several loci responsible for this syndrome, and variety in the molecular pathogenesis is the cause of phenotypic heterogeneity. BACKGROUND: Maternally-derived duplications that include the imprinted region on the proximal long arm of chromosome 15 underlie a complex neurobehavioral disorder characterized by cognitive impairment, seizures and a substantial risk for autism spectrum disorders1. The duplications most often take the form of a supernumerary pseudodicentric derivative chromosome 15 [der(15)] that has been called inverted duplication 15 or isodicentric 15 [idic(15)], although interstitial rearrangements also occur. INTRODUCTION: Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis is an immune-mediated syndrome that typically has a rapidly progressive course that can result in pancytopenia, coagulopathy, multi-system organ failure and death. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old Caucasian woman was referred in fulminant hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, with fever, pancytopenia, splenomegaly, mental status changes and respiratory failure. She was found to have stage IV classical Hodgkin lymphoma, in addition to Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegalovirus viremia. Her presentation was preceded by a 3-year prodrome consisting of cytopenia and fever that were partially controlled by steroids and azathioprine. Mixed medullary-follicular carcinoma is an uncommon tumor of the thyroid. It is characterized by histological and immunohistochemical features of both follicular and parafollicular C cells. We report two female patients, aged 26 and 78 years, with mixed medullary-follicular carcinoma. Histologically, the tumors are composed of follicular carcinoma areas and solid nests of polygonal cells consistent with medullary carcinoma. Immunohistochemically, thyroglobulin and calcitonin positivity was detected. Precise diagnosis of mixed medullary-follicular carcinoma is essential for accurate treatment and follow-up.

Background: Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a dominantly inherited disease characterized by hypoplastic or absent clavicles, large fontanels, dental dysplasia, and delayed skeletal development. The purpose of this study is to investigate the genetic basis of Chinese family with CCD.

Methods: Here, a large Chinese family with CCD and hyperplastic nails was recruited. The clinical features displayed a significant intrafamilial variation. We sequenced the coding region of the RUNX2 gene for the mutation and phenotype analysis.

Cocaine produces a persistent reduction in cystine–glutamate exchange via system x_c− in the nucleus accumbens that may contribute to pathological glutamate signaling linked to addiction. System x_c− influences glutamate neurotransmission by maintaining basal, extracellular glutamate in the nucleus accumbens, which, in turn, shapes synaptic activity by stimulating group II metabotropic glutamate autoreceptors. HIV-1 transcription is essential for the virus replication cycle. HIV-1 Tat is a viral transactivator that strongly stimulates the processivity of RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) via recruitment of the cyclin T1/CDK9 positive transcription elongation factor, which phosphorylates the C-terminal domain (CTD) of RNAPII. Consistently, HIV-1 replication in transformed cells is very sensitive to direct CDK9 inhibition. Thus, CDK9 could be a potential target for anti-HIV-1 therapy. The purpose of this study was to determine if post-operative serum albumin and percentage of weight loss improved in patients who received formalized pre-operative nutrition counseling. Nutrition intervention was measured quantitatively. A retrospective review of records was conducted on 77 RYGB patients (68 female subjects and 9 male subjects), ages 21-64, during January 2001 through January 2006.

The results indicated that patients who received pre-operative nutrition intervention had better clinical outcomes of serum albumin than those with no nutrition intervention from a registered dietitian. In Neurospora, metabolic oscillators coexist with the circadian transcriptional/translational feedback loop governed by the FRQ (Frequency) and WC (White Collar) proteins. One of these, a choline deficiency oscillator (CDO) observed in chol-1 mutants grown under choline starvation, drives an uncompensated long-period developmental cycle ( approximately 60-120 h). To assess possible contributions of this metabolic oscillator to the circadian system, molecular and physiological rhythms were followed in liquid culture under choline starvation, but these only confirmed that an oscillator with a normal circadian period length can run under choline starvation. A small number (<2%) of mammalian retinal ganglion cells express the photopigment melanopsin and are intrinsically photosensitive (ipRGCs). Light depolarizes ipRGCs and increases intracellular calcium levels ( [Ca²⁺]_i ) but the signaling cascades underlying these responses have yet to be elucidated. To facilitate physiological studies on these rare photoreceptors, highly enriched ipRGC cultures from neonatal rats were generated using anti-melanopsin-mediated plate adhesion (immunopanning). This novel approach enabled experiments on isolated ipRGCs, eliminating the potential confounding influence of rod/cone-driven input. Light induced a rise in [Ca²⁺]_i (monitored using fura-2 imaging) in the immunopanned ipRGCs and the source of this Ca²⁺ signal was investigated. To determine how tetraspanin KAI1/CD82, a tumor metastasis suppressor, inhibits cell migration, we assessed which motility-related cellular events are altered by KAI1/CD82 and how KAI1/CD82 regulates these events. We found that KAI1/CD82-overexpressing cancer cells exhibit various morphologies but typically display elongated cellular extensions and a lack of lamellipodia. Live imaging demonstrated that the formation of lamellipodia and retraction of extensions were deficient upon KAI1/CD82 overexpression.
